Started reading a new book titled Autumn of the Black Snake about the US effort to make the Northwest Territory safe for settlers, clearing Ohio, Indiana and Michigan of natives and the French. It also details Washington's efforts in creating the US Army. Interesting reading about our beloved Ohio before it was Ohio and reading about Blue Jacket and Little Turtle who were supposedly very effective native leaders. The author's opinion is that Tecumseh who came along a little later, was only an annoyance for the US, unlike Blue Jacket and Little turtle who actually almost stopped the US from expanding Westward. General "Mad" Anthony Wayne was nicknamed Black Snake by the natives.
Author claims this is the only untitled war the US ever fought, but it was incredibly important and difficult. Fascinating to read about the Miami, Delaware and Shawnee tribes and the Scioto and Ohio rivers, the Treaty of Greenville and other Ohio landmarks. Recommended by Chic.
