We all know Kieta Bates-Diop.  We badly missed him on our favorite team last year due to injury.  I stumbled across (possibly) where the name Kieta was derived.  It both fascinated and dumbfounded me.

In the 13th Century near Mali a culture controlled the Sahara crossing point that also merged with central Africa's trade routes.  The leader was Mansa Musa Kieta the first.  I have heard that almost all European gold (which was standard currency at that time) passed through his jurisdiction.

It is estimated that he is the wealthiest person to have ever lived.  Bill Gates is not really close.

The part that dumbfounds me is his pilgrimage to Mecca where he spent and / or donated so much gold in Cairo (the largest city in the world at that time not in China) that he destabilized the value of gold and some say their entire economy for an entire DECADE.

I'm hoping KBD can do that with 3's or dunks next year.
