The Jim Hendrix Experience released their second album, "Axis: Bold As Love", today in 1968. The album was released in December in the UK but the record label decided to push back the American release because their first album was still on the chart.

This was the first Hendrix album I bought so my opinion of it is a bit higher than many. Hendrix only released three studio albums while he was alive with "Axis" being the middle album. As such, it is often lost between the brilliant glare of Hendrix's debut and the shadow of his swan song. This is unfortunate as "Axis" contains some outstanding tracks.

You could fill half of a greatest hits album with over half the songs on this record alone - "Bold As Love", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Wait Until Tomorrow", "Little Wing", "If 6 Was 9", "Castles Made of Sand", "One Rainy Wish" and "Little Miss Lover".

Whether you want some classic Hendrix music or want to get in touch with your inner hippie through some far out lyrics, this a great album to revisit or check out for the first time. (Don't let the fact that "Spanish Castle Magic" is actually about a club in Seattle and not a castle in Spain harsh your mellow.)

The Hendrix estate are pricks about allowing his music on YouTube so here's Joe Bonamassa and Stevie Ray Vaughn instead:
