Atypical of much of what is discussed in these TIMH passages, the industrial rock album Pretty Hate Machine was released today, the debut album for Nine Inch Nails, or more aptly, Cleveland Ohio’s Trent Reznor. The album demo was developed and recorded by Reznor while he also worked as a night janitor at Right Track Studios in Cleveland. He would work on it when the studios were not in use, and plays most of the keyboards, drum machines, guitars, and samplers himself.
Soundwise it was fairly basic and probably pretty reminiscent of Depeche mode and New Order. I’ve never been into electronic or much industrial but this album and (NIN in general) had ‘darker’ introverted, angst-ridden lyrics, and enough of a rock vibe to get my attention. And these guys can be pretty metal live. One critic called it "a synthesizer-dominated industrial dance record that on occasion slipped under the alternative rock banner."
Pretty Hate Machine has since gone triple platinum and became one of the first independently released albums to attain platinum certification. "It's the all-purpose alternative album." Reznor quipped. "If you want to stage dive to it, you can, but if you're a big Depeche Mode fan, you can get what you need out of it as well."
