Today is opening day for the Maryland Blue Crab fishery.  It's been very up and down the past few years for this fishery. There's been some cold winters causing the crabs to really dig in during the winter. The watermen our hoping for a good season this year. It's not an easy job (not Deadliest Catch, but a hard life for sure). I work with some guys who have watermen in their family. They bust their asses only to be taken to cleaners by the wholesalers and restaurants (a dozen jumbos in the summer can be over $100 in the summer in OC, MD).  This past winter was very mild, so there is a lot of optimism that it could be a good year. 

So the next time you think about buying that vacuum sealed bag of imitation crab meat, think of sitting down with your friends and family, for 3 or 4 hours, eating crabs and drinking beer (Hove-you know what I'm talking about).
