On this day in 1929 Calvin Coolidge signed an Executive Order protecting certain lands and lakes around the Teton Mountain range, creating Grand Teton National Park. More lands were protected after with the last bit being in 1950, which brought the park to it's current size.

Grand Teton encompasses the best of the American West: dramatic peaks, clear rivers and lakes, and wildlife in abundance. It's nearly impossible to drive by and not see herds of bison and pronghorn antelope, with moose and elk sightings near the roads being quite common. Other noteworthy but less visible species are grizzly and black bear, along with wolves, coyotes and the North American river otter. Large birds of prey are also quite common, and with much spent there you'll probably see a bald eagle taking a fish from the Snake River.

The park also has over 200 miles of hiking trails providing access to climbing and backcountry camping areas. Be advised, a bear-proof canister is required gear for all backcountry campers.

Consider taking your next vacation to one of our fine national parks in the west. Walking uphill all day is good for the soul.
