Sunday Metal Shop jumps across the pond to catch up with English metal masters Orange Goblin. The band formed in 1995 as Our Haunted Kingdom but were renamed Orange Goblin by the time of their first album, “Frequencies from Planet 10”, in 1997. Orange Goblin was firmly a stoner rock group at this time but would evolve into a well-rounded, genre defying metal band over the next 20 years.

As time has passed more and more of Orange Goblin’s influences have seeped into their music. It was always evident that they faithfully observed the Black Sabbath, but soon hints of Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, Celtic Frost and Black Flag would appear. Through their musical evolution, Orange Goblin continued to tour relentlessly. Opening for a wide variety of acts – Clutch, Monster Magnet, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Queens of the Stone Age, Dio – exposed them to a wide audience and helped ensure their longevity.

Orange Goblin is one of the few bands that are as good live as they are on wax. They are reminiscent of Clutch, in that they have a deep catalog that ensures no two shows are the same. The steady touring has sharpened them into one of the best live shows that metal has to offer. Don’t come to the show expecting theatrics or pomp and circumstance or else you’ll be disappointed. Do come to the show ready to get kicked in the nuts by multiple genres of metal.

Orange Goblin released their latest album, “Back from the Abyss”, in 2014. They have nine albums to their credit and are showing no signs of slowing down. While they’re not playing in the U.S. during the rest of 2015, it’s highly likely they’ll be in a town near you next year. If you like what you hear I highly recommend catching them the next time you can.
