We're into the dog days of summer, with the Fourth of July behind us and Labor Day (and football) still a few weeks away. While the NFL teams will be opening training camps later this month (Browns rookies report the 19th), it still leaves a bit of a lull for the college (Ohio State) football fanatic like myself. With 56 days to go until the Buffalo Bulls come to Columbus, and even besides all the news the good people at 11W can provide, I still find myself still looking for a Buckeye fix.
While Ramzy posted a blog a couple months back on summer reading, I wanted to see what kind of Buckeye or college football related reads the 11W community has to recommend to help pass the time until the 2013 season arrives. Although I haven't added anything in a few years, I have a few books I've picked up myself over the last decade focusing on the sport and school we're all crazy over, listing them below:
The Official Ohio State Football Encyclopedia - Jack Park, Sports Publications LLC (2001) - A definitive read-all about the history of the Ohio State football program, from it's inception through the hiring of James Patrick Tressel after the 2000 season.
ESPN Big Ten Football Encyclopedia - Edited by Michael MacCambridge, ESPN Books (2007) - A rare purchase from the WWL, the BTFE provides a year-by-year, team-by-team review of the Big Ten Conference from 1876 through the 2006 season. Also provides the same for the MAC conference from 1947 also through the 2006 season.
Rites of Autumn - Richard Whittingham, The Free Press (2001) - A collection of college football history - great moments, teams, players and coaches all celebrating the traditions held Saturday afternoons each fall.
The 100-Yard War - Greg Emmanuel, Wiley & Sons (2004) - An excellent review of the number one rivalry in all of sports, OSU vs TTUN.
"Then Tress Said to Troy" - Jeff Snook, Triumph Books (2007) - A collection of great moments in Buckeye history, from Chic Harley to Carmen, Ohio, celebrating the people, the tradition, the excellence that is Ohio State Buckeye football. Includes an audio cd of the 1973 version of "The Game".
Diary of an Unforgettable Season - Steve Snapp, Triumph Books (2007) A behind the scenes look at the 2006 season.
What It Means to be a Buckeye - Jim Tressel with Jeff Snook, Triumph Books (2003) A collection of first hand accounts, from Hopalong Cassady to Kenny Peterson, on what their respective years at Ohio State meant to them - then and now. An excellent read on how special being a Buckeye, on and off the field, truly is.
At last check, each of these books can be found online (Amazon) with all under $20. Will look to revisit a some of these to keep me sated the next few weeks, but certainly welcome input/suggestions from any of you good folks out there.
Thanks for reading (and recommending), Go Bucks!
