Your Opinions: Common Man, Post-Torg

FYI, Monday-Friday at 3 PM EST, you can listen to "Common Man and Company" (Sports talk-radio) on 97.1 FM (Columbus) on your radio or at 971TheFan.com.

The show underwent a much-publicized "personnel change", late last year - sparked by former co-host Scott Torgerson's Tweet about Desmond Howard.

I'm interested in reading opinions from those who've been listening to this show - before and after the ouster of, "The Torg."

My opinion: It ain't good.

I don't get the random stares from fellow rush hour commuters I once did from laughing uncontrolably.  Common Man is still funny but not as funny with the dialogue they once shared.   I love T-bone but in a stand alone role.  I'm still upset with Torg's descision to use twitter.  Damn you Torgerson!

Still a solid show. I actually like Bishop & Rothman more than any other show, but they're both solid in my mind.

I think the show was amazing with both guys.  Krenzel added to what those two did.  Honestly I've never liked another radio show more. When Torg left, the show suffered badly.  Like I said I like Krenzel but he can't carry the show.  Now that T-bone seems to be the permanent replacement things are picking back up.  The antics are back and Common Man can have more fun with the show like he used to.  I don't think it's as good as it was with Torg but it's getting better.  At least there's some energy and chemistry back on the show.  It's not the most insightful show on the radio but it's not meant to be.  Most sports discussion is just re-hashing someone else's thoughts anyway.  At least with Common Man and company you get some immaturity and entertainment instead of the same old stories re-discussed.  They have always gotten a lot of scruitny for not diving headfirst into the popular story of the day but I prefer that.  Unless they have some breaking news, I don't want to hear the same thing I heard on Mike and Mike.

Spot on. Pretty much totally agree with your write up. Only thing I'll add is that for years I have listened to sports radio all day, 5 days a week. When it was just 1460...when Riccordati was with Spielman...when they were choosing between common man and senior hurler for ricordatis nickname...even when torg first came aboard. I loved common man and torg. There were times I'd sit in my driveway to finish segments. I don't dislike Krenzel or TBone or any of those guys but the show just isn't as good. I agree that TBone and Common man are picking up steam. But I still miss common man and torg.
For the record, I cannot and will not listen to Mike and Mike. I can not stand them. Horrible and whiney. I enjoy Cowherd and he usually has interesting insight. But again, common man and the torg were the best.

Just my opinion, but T-Bone is awful.  Different strokes, I know, but of what little time I do have to listen from 3-6 I can't stand listening to C&C.

The guys used to make me laugh, albeit a bit childish at times, but I was entertained.  Now when Im driving home I tune in for maybe a max of 5 mins before T-bone annoys the heck out of me and I have to change the station.  T-bone sucks!  He gets way to much stuff off of this site, and rarely provides any original content.

He does get a lot from this site, so he probably now knows you don't like him. But if it wasn't this site it would be another. They're hosts not insiders or reporters. They just relay information. I sound like I'm trying to back him up but I just wanted to point that out.

They should've brought the Torg back  a long time ago. The dude is a comedian/entertainment personality. I mean does Gameday fire Desmand Howard for his language on the The Rivalry: TTUN vs. Ohio State?

I don't know how badly we can take this crap out of context anymore. Society is all F'd up trying to push extremes while being PC at the same time...just doesn't make any damn sense IMHO.

And is it just me or do a lot of the guys on 97.1 sound the same? Like their voice tone & speech sounds very similar...I wish they'd diversify more to be honest...I digress, Common Man & The Torg >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Common Man & Company.

I was never impressed by either of their "sports intellects". Neither one of them knew what they were talking about with most sports news, but they were funny together. I liked the show with Krenzel because he is smart and knows sports, although you can tell it is not his full time job since he doesn't keep up with the news all the time. Together they were a good show bc Krenzel was the smart analyst type guy and Mike was the lead guy who was moderately funny. T-Bone does not have any redeemable qualities on the radio. Not only does he not know a lick about most topics, but they are not funny together either. The Torg was a complete bonehead, but the show was much more entertaining before he left.

I guess when you get to the "top" as the 2nd highest rated local sports radio show, it's hard to get much better when 1 of the 2 guys leaves.

I do not care for either of them.  They have too much of what I call "mock outrage".  They will say "x offends me" and usually it is something to trivial or stupid to be offended by.  I find them trying to be funny but I never laugh.  On the drive home from football games I would listen to the post game interviews the remaining half hour of analysis and then switch over to 610 when they came on.  I thought firing the Torg over that tweet was stupid though.  It was supposed to be funny, it wasn't, but I didn't find it grounds for dismissal.

The thing they did have going for them was more energy than the show has now...they might have been goofy and less serious (tried to be funny first and about sports second) but you could tell they developed a chemistry that if nothing more, created more genuine energy and enthusiasm then most shows of the typical, local sports radio shows have.

The show has changed a lot but I still enjoy it. It may not be as good but what else am I going to listen to! I do like Bishop and Rothman as well.

I know the tweet was the big thing why Torg got fired, but the week after the Common Man stated that no one really knows why the Common Man got fired but for a handfull of people. So I always wondered if someting else didn't happen or what. Idk if anyone else has any insight on that. Either way I listen to 97.1 all day from mike and mike to common man and company, most people don't like The hurd but he doesn't really care if you like him or not which makes me like him a bit because he says what he really thinks.

It's still good at times, but it's not quite the same.  I miss Torg.

I still think down the road they will bring the Torg back. Especially if they see a big hit in the ratings. With that said, in terms of actual content of discussion and ability to debate, I think T-bone is far better than the Torg ever was. The Torg was unable to challenge the Common Man in debate, made up words, and just reiterated the same points over and over again. All in all I would rather have the Torg because I think him and Mike together are hilarious, but I've actually enjoyed someone challenging Mike's views on things.
