To the Staff - Stance on NSFW/NSFS material in the forums?

It truly seems these days that seemingly every other forum post (this is obviously an exaggeration, but you get the point) eventually results in, for whatever reason, a scandalous picture of half naked or completely naked women. This is a problem for many loyal 11Dub'ers, not only because they do not care to see that here on Eleven Warriors, but because they simply cannot see that on Eleven Warriors for professional reasons. I just would like to ask the staff your guys' stance on the "issue" and if there is any potential solution?

Thanks for weighing in Jason, and I appreciate what we have here (as I am sure most do).

I know some are tired of this conversation, but as NW said, this has been a pretty great conversation (seems to show its merit).  Not perfect, few things are, but kudos to the community for keeping it pretty classy.

Jason addressed this:

I removed all of the photos from this thread because I think this is a worthwhile conversation to have and they weren't adding much in the way of substance.

hope this helps

+1 Thanks, Pope.

Jason, maybe some of the images weren't adding much in the way of substance, but they were adding something in terms of levity; something that has been sorely lacking on this website over the last week.  Not a big deal, but this kind of goes against the "light touch" approach you seek to take.

Didn't want to derail the other thread or start a new one, but my comment (which would have derailed the original thread even further than it has gone off topic) fits this discussion.

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/buckshot/2013/02/20055/braxton-miller-grac...

For those who think adding a Kate Upton picture would not lead to sexual comments of having sex with her... see now a thread where the very mention of Kate Upton (text only, not even one pic) has turned into a "I'd hit that" thread. Just interesting to note IMO... but didn't want to derail that thread even further than it is going now...

Actually, this disproves your point. If just mentioning her name provides the same response as a picture, the picture isn't your problem now is it?

steensn's picture
steensn on 26 Feb 2013 - 7:09pm #

No, it disproves the response above saying their are no crude responses. If just the mention of her name brings that reaction then further pictureafication is almost always more crude. My issue is not text, that is why I didn't say anything in the thread to take it further off topic. This is just proof that these type of comments are happening here at 11w when someone statements they are not.

The picture is still the issue because I cannot choose to unsee it and neither can anyone else. I feel that the comments were taking a good thread off topic, which is against 11w policies. But the picture is still the problem because it is not manageable in this context, it is brash and bold. Someone passing by can easily see and react to it without needed to pry, txt must be read and focused on. Pictures are readily understood and understood.

Your trying to split hairs. Upton was just on the cover of sports illustrated, so the comment was a legitimate one. Check out the "Current group photo....." thread thats active on the forum. I made a comment about Kate Uptons ass in an attempt to break the tension, the thread shifted directions, then went right back to point. It's a great thread and a good read. Check it out Steens, there one hell of a pic on there.

I posted this earlier, I don't know if anyone saw it, but I had the first, long, vertical wise and most viewable, ad on 11W come up with an advertisement for the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition with a rather reveling photo of Kate Upton.  I can't help but wonder if this bares any weight or changes anything in this conversation.  I first posted it as an NSFW warning to those who Kate Upton photos are NSFW as well as a link to the screen shot(which I still have).  I'm guessing I didn't post it right or it may have been deleted (but it didn't violate the 11W Commenting Policy in any way and I didn't receive a message letting me know why it was deleted and what I did wrong so I could avoid it in the future and not get banned; so I think it was my bad and not the staff's). I think this is a crucial point, not to be ignored, in this conversation.  If it content that is suitable for advertising on a site you visit at work, is it NSFW?  I know this was touched upon earlier (I can't remember who it was as all the pictures were deleted out of this thread at one point), but now it is the very person, Kate Upton, and Magazine, Sports Illustrated, that has been the focal point of much of this discussion.  Would the fact that the content/picture was an advertisement on a site vs. a post in a thread change if it was SFW vs. NSFW and if it could cause a sexual harassment lawsuit or not?

steensn's picture
steensn on 27 Feb 2013 - 6:44pm #

1) they have no control over the ads, it is based on your website history and keywords on the page.

2) I don't that add is any more ro less appropriate than the t-shirt ads with women for work.

I can shrink my window size to make those ads disappear and I do, which is why I have yet to complain about them because I can control who sees them. Just scoot the right side in just a tad and they go away.

Doesn't change anything in the conversation for me because it isn't relevant to what posters are choosing to do. Just because Google decides to be work inappropriate doesn't mean it is ok. It's equivalent logic to my daughter whining that she should have something because all her friends do.

Gray Box's picture
Gray Box on 1 Mar 2013 - 6:51am #

1) Steen: There seems to be a misnomer going around that there is no control over ads when using Google AdSense. You actually have much more control over what ads appear in Google's AdSense then you do when trying to control what a user can/will post before they post it.  Now ads you might not want still may slip through at times, but just like when a user posts something you don't approve of, you can remove them.  If you want to know more check it out here: Allowing and blocking ad controls guide.  It also isn't purely based on your website history or keywords on the page as the Kate Upton SISE ad came up on first on two 11W pages that didn't mention Kate Upton or SI and it came up on my phone, which I have never searched for, or been on a page other then 11W that have Kate Upton or SI on my phone.

2) Are those t-shirt ads you mentioned (side note: which have never shown up for me) NSFW?

If you shrink your browser to avoid the ads on the side and don't scroll over to the side, why do you scroll down, and expand your view, into the area that has these Kate Upton photos?  As far as I'm aware, there hasn't been a single Kate Upton photo that hasn't first had her name come up before it.  There might not have been a NSFW warning, but it wasn't like there was a thread on a recruit, a post about said recruit, a reply about said recruit and then just bam: Kate Upton picture.  When you see that someone asked who she was or requested to see her or brought her up, why would you continue to scroll down and not avoid it like you do with the ads to the side?  If you want to see the rest of the thread, that you now know is most likely NSF(your)W, why don't you scroll slowly until you see the top of the pic and then scroll quickly over it so as not to offend anyone else in your office?

There are a few things you've consistently done in this thread when you've responded to me that I can't respond to you after this unless they are no longer done.  Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the things you bring to the site, I upvoted your pic of the kid eating hamburgers in the other thread (and in fact I have never downvoted you), but when you respond to me you use some methods that are normally frowned upon when debating so it makes it very difficult to communicate with you so I will have to stop if you continue to use these methods. The first is that you misinterpret and/or misrepresent a lot of my points.  This last point in your last post is a perfect example (now it isn't nearly as offensive as the last reply you had to me that made me not respond to this thread for days and almost stop posting on 11W all together, but) it is not the point I made.  (My GF wanted me to make this next point and she has even tried to join 11W and express her points of view[not just on this topic/thread], but I think since we use the same computer they didn't approve her:)  It is not equivalent logic to your daughter whining due to others.  I did not say one could justify posting something because someone else does. Equivalent logic would be if your daughter got on a sports website forum and there was a thread about Mia Hamm.  Someone brings up David Beckham and someone else posts a picture of him from one of his underwear ads/shoots.  You don't think that those photos are suitable for your daughter, you don't want her to view them and tell her not to look at them.  Would she be in any more trouble if a random poster that she has no control over, and the website didn't endorse, posted a photo you didn't think was appropriate for her to view, as opposed to if an actual ad for the underwear with Beckham wearing just that underwear appeared on the site?  Would the poster's picture get your daughter in more trouble then the ad even though the ad has a very similar, if not arguably more reveling, photo?  This is actual "equivalent logic" and not the misinterpretation example you gave. The closest thing you can say I've said (which I didn't even do in the post you replied to) is that when one says that photos of nearly naked men is fine and SFW, but then says nearly naked pictures of women are not fine and are NSFW would fit Merriam-Webster's definition of the word Sexism(or sexist): 1: prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially: discrimination against women 2: behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex.

This is just one example of misinterpretation/misrepresentation that you have done and just one of the methods you have done in some of your posts that make it so I can't really properly communicate with you.  A few others is that you just leave out, or ignore, major points in my posts.  If you ignore major points, you really aren't acknowledging the overall thesis of the post, and therefore not getting at the root of my post.  Another thing you have done is just dismissed points that I've made, and backed up with examples and facts, and stated the way you feel, with little to no facts backing you up, as absolute fact or the way things are. The last one I'll mention (not that it's the last one, but the last one I'll mention now) is calling my points "stupid and idiotic", "delusional" or similarly demeaning adjectives just because you don't agree with them.  These are all things that are generally frowned upon when having a civil, polite and proper debate.  I know a lot of people think this conversation has been way too long, beating a dead horse, useless, or something else similar, but I've really enjoyed this stimulating conversation for the most part.  However, if you keep using any, or all, of these methods, I will choose not to respond to those posts.

post scriptum: Almost all browsers have the ability to turn the pictures off so you won't see any of these pictures while at work or anywhere that you don't want to.  That way you don't have to avoid this, or any site, while at work and don't have to fear the repercussions.   Although most of these won't disable the ads and those type of pics.

Sorry Steensn, this point kills this thread. You cannot mute the voices here at 11w. You will not get everyone to follow lock step in your view. People will say things you don't want. People will post pictures you don't like. You are going to have to deal with, so long as the staff determines that it does not violate their rules..

It's reasonable to ask to people not to post NSFW (as I mentioned, I have refrained from what I determine is inappropriate material on my posts) out of respect of others. You WILL NOT be able to force anything upon the entire members here, unless you work here and make the rules. Best start learning to develop thicker skin or take care of yourself when you view the site. You can't control everyone..

You will only bring some people to post stuff to spite you the more that you try...

steensn on 27 Feb 2013 - 12:11pm #

I didn't even ask that... please look at my post, I was addressing the comment "people haven't responded with "i'd bang her" type comments." Nothing more. No where did I ask people not to make these type of comments unless it is off topic, which is only the content relevant to the OP. Please don't invent something I am not saying...

This thread has very long legs!

And, speaking of legs, in the Victorian Era, they used to cover table and piano legs with embroidery and tablecloths, lest the gentlemen get the wrong ideas. I think it might be time to wrap this thread in a bundling bag.

Just so everyone knows: Every major browser that I am aware of has the ability to turn off pictures.  This doesn't require your works tech person or any special software.  You can turn off pics for whatever reason: work, a child, a prank on a co-worker or whatever, your motives/reasons are your prerogative.  I just want to relay this info to everyone as it's pretty easy to turn the pictures off and back on again at any point with your browsers settings.  Note:  All browsers don't necessarily turn off ads though, if you use their settings to turn off their pictures but it should turn off any other picture that you may not want to show up on that computer's screen.

Google Chrome go to Chrome's settings > show advanced settings > privacy - content settings > Images  in here you can even manage sites so if it's something like 11W you can allow all the pics from 11W but if they are a pic from another site that a user posts, it should block it.

Internet Explorer: Step 1: Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously on your keyboard. The "Run" dialog is displayed.

Step 2: Type "Inetcpl.cpl" and press the "Enter" key. This loads the "Internet Options" window.

Step 3: Select the "Advanced" tab.

Step 4 : Scroll down to the "Multimedia" section.

Step 5: Uncheck the box next to "Show Pictures" and click "OK." You have turned off the automatic downloading of pictures in Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox: On your toolbar, click on Tools, then select Options, then select Content from the top bar. Uncheck the box that says load images automatically.

Safari: Open your Safari web browser by clicking on the Safari icon in the dock. > Click on Safari in your Safari menu, located at the top of your screen. When the drop-down menu appears, choose Preferences. > Select the General tab from the Preferences window, which is now overlaying your browser window. > You will now see a check box labeled "Open 'safe' files after downloading", located near the middle of the Preferences window. If this box is checked, click on the check mark and verify that it is no longer active. > Click on the red circle/x located in the top left hand corner of the Preferences window to complete the process. You will now be returned to your main browser window. > You can Google this for other browsers or more info on the browsers (or different versions of the browsers) that I have mentioned in here.

Also, in the same vein as the above, is it possible for 11W to put a "turn off pictures in posts" option in our settings? I browse 11W and one other site while at work and the other site sees a TON of people posting scantily clad women in the middle of normal conversation. But they have that option where I can select to have every picture that is posted in a comment is actually just presented with an [IMG] link instead of actually been seen when I click on the thread. That helps a lot with browsing at work and I can select which ones I believe I want to select.

I check out the site while on break at work, but I do so at my own risk.  I don't think it's completely safe to check out even the news headlines - you never know what you are going to see so I think this debate is kind of useless.  If you are at work and are worried about the content a site may have then you are told not to view that site while at work.  View it when you get home.  Have you seen the things that get through on Facebook anymore?  Personally I think some of the comments we see are more offensive than the pics.  Of course that's what makes America awesome - everyone gets to have an opinion!  Ha.
