Stop scUM Pledge

Can we please stop with the "scUM" reference please? We are better than that. TSUN and/or M*ch*gan and/or whatever else floats your boat that's not completely low brow will suffice.

I really don't think it's a big deal at all... "worst state ever" and being called "cheaters" all the time is way worse than the play on words/initials (scUM)...I'm not a fan of it but it's nothing. Unless coaches etc were using it, it's nothing.

scUM is not low brow at all in my opinion, they have been called many terrible things over the years by fans, but scUM is not all that bad.  I mean, how many times do you hear "F*** Michigan!" on Mirror Lake night? If that was the only phrase used to describe them on this site, then it would be kind of over the top, but scUM? If it's really that bad please explain your ratioanle.

Meh, I guess these things give the rivalry "character", but I still prefer to use "The University of Michigan".  I mean, "That State Up North" and Hoke's classic "Ohio" are innocent, slightly clever monikers for your enemy, but there's a fine line betwixt those things and "Fuckeyes" or "Wolverqueens".  I think all's fair in such a fantastic rivalry, and there's no question that the latter nicknames give The Game some edge, but I'd prefer to see less of those and more of the former.

BrewstersMillions's picture
BrewstersMillions on 21 Feb 2013 - 7:34am #

Yeah, I'm pefectly fine calling them "Michigan" or "Wolverines". Maybe I'm a fake Buckeye but I just can't hate one of college football's truly great programs and half of the greatest rivalry in all of sport. I dislike them because their joy comes at the expense of my favorite team but they are a world class institution and football program, I respect them.

Not really into the nicknames, it's kinda corny. Would rather just denigrate the school by pointing out that we own them on the field and the court, and under Urban it's just going to get worse. scUM, TSUN, "Ohio"- never really into this stuff. It's just dumb in my opinion, and weak hate. Wouldn't even make Silky Johnson bat an eye.

Good one Oyster.  Luckily, none have used the term scUM, but I have already lost one of them to LSU.  I can't blame her though since she does go to school there.  Darn you Louisiana for offering in-state high school graduates with qualifying gpa and test scores free tuition!  Trust me though, if she or my others ever do use that term, to the corner with them.

Asking someone to stop saying scUM is like asking people to stop down-voting on this page. It's part of the rivalry. Their fans call us bad names, we call them bad names. It's going to happen. Not to mention that it's as much a part of this page as horrible spelling and even worse grammar and intolerable run on sentences, so suck it up, and move on with your life, Nancy.

My nephew, now 9, still thinks M!ch!gan is a "bad" word, refuses to wear any shirt with blue and yellow together. During a Spring Game a few years back, Ttun softball was playing our ladies and was waiting out a rain delay by their bus.  As we walked pass, the same nephew, then 5 years, suddenly started to shout at the girls, "Go home Blue, Blue stinks, Buckeyes are better than Blue." As we were hiding our laughter, my brother-in-law swiftly corrected his son. He told him it was ok not to like UM, but we need to be nice to our guests. Even if they are from UM.  He asked my nephew, "How would you like someone was telling you to go home and that the Buckeyes stink if you were visiting at M!ch!gan?" My nephew thought about it for a second and replied "Why would I want to go there?" No hiding the laughter after that.

Concerning the scUM issue, I really do not see it as a big deal. They, Ttun, have their names for us.  I show Ttun fans respect and do not mind to talk football with them, but the conservation will be terminated once they slander the Bucks or display lack of knowledge of their own team.

Count me as one that enjoys the rivalry immensely.  Even to the point where I want [them] to be as good as possible going into the Game.  The name calling is all part of it, and only ratchets up the emotion between fans.  Anything that brings the country's greatest rivalry to the forefront in the midst of the SEC SEC chants is good for us AND [them].  I would love to see us in the same division and both in the top ten going into the game that decides who goes to the B1G championship.  Sadly, I don't think they make it this next year, but perhaps in 2014, this could very well happen.  And, **sigh**, how long till football?

scUM is a stupid moniker.  Always has been.  It makes us sound like a four-year old who just figured out the things that rhyme with F*CK.  Very cute, now finish your milk.

TSUN or TTUN or even M*CH*G*N.  But whatever.  I don't really care either way.  Just ask yourself if Woody would have ever uttered scUM.

Everyone can find the right term for themselves.  I tend toward Hodge, Andy, and Nerd in preferring words other than scum, although I am not offended by anything else either.  Some of my best friends are from MI. ok, my wife is from MI, although she is an apathetic fan.  Nevertheless, let people find their favorite name and have fun with it, as long as it remains fun.

If we aren't supposed to use scUM, then is Ann Arbor Community College (AACC) acceptable?

I like what the fake lantern had to say on the subject:

The university of michigan faced a prostitution scandal following the revelation that students pay to be in Ann Arbor.

I lived in Livonia and Hazel Park in the late 70's and Michiscum is as light as it's going to get. I've still got some hard feelings, even after nearly 40 years.

Class isn't exclusively about what is said, it is also about how it is said. Currently, there are two TTUN fans commenting on this post. Neither have a single downvote. That is classy. So what if someone says scUM or whatever if it is being done in a playful tongue in cheek fashion. Personally I don't like scUM and prefer TTUN but whatevs.

Treating others with respect is important, what one calls the stinky body orifice of a school they went to is less important.
