I'm somewhat new here so I'm not sure how much everyone is into video games.
Just wanted to know what the EW community thought of the PS4 announcement? Impressed? Wanted more? Will you buy one right out of the gate?

Personally, I always wait until generations 3 or 4 come out of the gate. The bugs are usually more worked out at that point, the price is lower, and the features are better than those who want to be on the bleeding edge. Also, I really only play NCAA Football and FIFA, so it's not as big a deal to me.
Yep. I waited a while to get an XBox 360 and in the time I've had me one core system, my brother (who had to buy it as it came out) has been through 4.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
yeah, i think they may have eventually had recalls on the first 360's, i waited and have only had one system as well
See I'm kind of a technology whore... I'll pay extra money to get something basically because it's new. I paid like $50 bucks extra to get my new phone (even though my old phone worked just fine) just because it was new technology.
That being said, it really depends on the price point and the games that come out for each console. If the new Xbox comes out and is $50 bucks less and has basically the same technology and same games, I'll probably go with that. Either way, I will probably get one or the other very earlier on.
Can't say I disagree with you though... The full potential of both consoles probably won't be reached for another couple years.
I waited quite a while for the PS2 and PS3 before I bought them. I won't have a problem waiting for the PS4 either. I'm not all that excited about the titles they announced so far and I can wait till the price drops. When GTA-5 comes out and a new Gran Turismo and a new COD, I might start sweating though.
"Get him a body bag, Yeah!"
wont gta 5 be released on ps3 and 360 still?
Yeah it will. I'm sure a few games will be like this for a while and then they will switch over.
I think the switch over might be a lot quicker than previous generation switches because of the difference in technology and because there is no backward compatibility.
It's all about money and developers will be doing everything they can to get more of it.
Well is GTA5 going ps4 too?
Wouldn't make sense to push it back towards the end of the year and not put it on next gen also.
Well, I've actually heard both... That it is just going to be for this gen only and that they will release it for next gen. I'm really up in the air on this one.
Class of 2010.
Xbox guy here, the only reason I'm excited about this bcz it'll put some pressure on Microsoft to get the new Xbox "720" that I'm waiting for out!!
I have both a PS3 and Xbox 360. I play Xbox more but that's basically because all of my friends only have an Xbox so to play online with them, I have to get all of my games for Xbox.
i keep reading that sony is waiting on microsoft to announce their actual hardware before they announce theres. Bitch move IMO, dont even have the balls to put your product out there and pit it against your rival
As someone who works in the "video game industry" and has pretty much owned every major console since the original NES I was a little disappointed by the the PS4's "unveiling".
We never got to see the actual console and while much of what we saw of the games looked decent, it was a pretty standard 1st generation release slate (a first person shooter here, a driving simulator there, a "first look" at a "truly next-gen" game that will probably never get finished or look completely different once it is finished, etc.).
Basically it confirmed to me what many people in the industry already fear: console's have reached somewhat of a plateau in what they can deliver as "fresh" gameplay. Sony (and I assume Microsoft) will just be selling us better graphics for about $600.
Well, the graphics on my XBOX 360 and PS3 are just fine, thank you. In fact, I mostly use both those systems to play games I loved from even older generations (Psychonauts and Metal Gear Solid to be specific).
The PS3 got a lot of flack for its price tag when first released, but it did not get enough credit for basically being the cheapest AND best blu-ray player on the market for almost the entire first year of its lifecycle. But I can't say something like this in defense of the PS4.
Will I get a PS4? Yes, I probably will. But I have no problem waiting for the first major price drop, which may take a year.
What do you do in the video game industry?
And I agree... It was a little under whelming. But the graphical technology does look much better... Did you see the Quantic Dream demo?! I did wish they showed more actual games, but I think that most developers are saving their best stuff for E3.
I'm a huge Metal Gear fan so I was hoping for a little reveal about the whole Phantom Pain thing or more Ground Zeros info.
Like I said, It kind of depends on games. For example, if a new MGS game comes out and is ONLY playable on next-gen, I will probably get one early. MGS4 is basically the only reason I got a PS3. Watch Dogs looks like it might be a game that does it for me. If it is only playable on PS4 or Xbox720, that will probably sway me to get one.
And like I said.... I'm a technology whore.
I currently work in marketing for a few different Facebook and mobile games, certainly not the most glamorous job in the industry but it gets the bills paid.
Huge Metal Gear fan! I also purchased my PS3 just for MGS4, totally worth it (but 3 is still my favorite).
And you are right, in the end it's all about the games. If by some miracle Sony announces that a new Metal Gear will be one of the launch titles, I will beg Sony to take my money.
That's tough man... I would say either MGS1 or MGS4 are my favorite. 3 was great but 4 was just so epic and 1 was what brought me into the franchise.
I can't wait for a new one to come out. (besides Rising because I'm really not that interested in it)
Couldnt have said it any better. Only can go so far with these consoles. They added nothing new that makes it worth another $500. Computer gaming and Steam will be gaining a much larger market share in the future.
Yeah, its the apps and stuff that kids are increasingly into now days. The kindles and ipads and iphones are going to be the driving force of the future of gaming, not high-priced consoles. Plus adults and kids alike are surprisingly happy with 'poor graphic' gaming that is actually fun gameplay like the stuff you can find on apps.
"Get him a body bag, Yeah!"
Do you think that the graphics will get much better? They are going to seemingly plateau as well. You almost need to look at this from a calculus standpoint. You can keep adding more pixels into an image, but the more and more you add, the less difference you will see. Just like calculus and if you continue adding an additional numbers behind a .9, at some point it's going to be 1. I think we're already seeing it. The quality of the image won't get that much better. You can certainly look into using more realistic images to get better graphics, but that would also require better, larger processors and more memory than what can fit on the current discs. This would also come at a huge cost to the customer, which I don't think they will want to do. I think the days of having increasingly better graphics are gone and these systems are going to need to find a way to create all in 1 type entertainment type consoles or they're going to lose their audience. XBox did it with the Kinect...but they need to keep advancing.
Well one of the developers (Quantic Dream), said that they can now use technology and techniques that are typically reserved for CG films.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUMOHSL53L8
It actually looks pretty incredible. If they can integrate this into games, they will look amazing.
I agree that it will eventually plateau, but there are still ways to make games better. For example, large open world games like GTA and Red Dead have to sacrifice certain things graphically to get everything into the game. With more processing power, there will be less sacrifice
yup, here's a good visualization of what you are describing
@ luckynewman: its between 6000 and 60,000 triangles where the returns are greatly diminished. 60,000 to 600,000 should'nt be that much of a difference either.
"Get him a body bag, Yeah!"
Personally I'm more of a techi hardware and graphics nut. That's why the little gaming I do is on pc powerhouses I build myself...I don't play that much but I obsess over the tech capabilities. There is a substantial difference between game-play experience, playing the same title available on consoles on a worthy pc with the game settings maxxed-out, night and day really. .. and its good to see sony and AMD bridgeing that gap since consoles get a much bigger selection of games
BammBamm is my dog, Riley is my 4 yr old daughter, and THE Ohio state Buckeyes complete the three most sacred loves I cherish
XBOX guy through and through since the release of the original Halo. Go to games: any COD, Halo, Tiger Woods (if i can figure out the fu(king chipping and putting touchiness in the new game), borderlands/skyrim here and there. tagname: HUGE en U tees (impressed it has not been banned for several years lol)
I'm in the same train of thought though of it putting pressure on xbox to release the new system
"Winter is coming" - Urban Meyer
I was reading up on the new 720 coming out, going to have kinnect built in, blue ray player finally, and is supposed to be 20x faster than the 360 with a much bigger hard drive and a lot of other features while maintaining a price in the 350ish range. Looking forward too that.
That's another thing with the PS4 announcement.... not much info. We still have no clue how big the HD will be.
wow 350? thatll be amazing. also i think over the next two years you will see 3 HUGE companies implement something that you wear on your eyes--Microsoft with the xbox, google (search google glass project, and apple, who may also be coming out with a wristwatch type of thing
Some chick wore the new google glasses to the Oscars. They're voiced command, can take pics, give you directions as well as a bunch of other feautures and I actually saw the price for the new xbox to be $299 but we'll see.
this is my kind of topic! I wont buy it right away, so in the meantime im going to have to run my ps3 into the ground to justify having to buy the ps4
Yeah one disappointment for me is not having it backwards compatible and not being able to transfer your PSN purchases....
I understand that it wouldn't work out with the PS4s new technology, but it's still a bummer that the hundreds of dollars I spent on PS3 software won't mean a thing.
I've played both Playstation and Xbox... I like the controller on Xbox better, but I like the fact that you can play online on Playstation for free. There are pros and cons to both.
The new controller for the PS4 looks interesting. Kind of like the 'Share' button. Not sure what the whole touch pad thing is going to do....
I'm curious to see if the Xbox controller will change much.
I heard the new Xbox controller is going to have a touch screen in the middle of it w/ the buttons on the outside.
Here's also some more info on the 720...
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/382897/xbox-720-the-14-game-changin...
Also reading up more about it, it's suppose to let you to be able to download content and the games in the background while playing your games... The console should also be able to run multiple apps and games at once, allowing players to pause and switch between processes. It will also have siri built in so you can just say "xbox" to turn it on..
** I've seen so many different console types and controller types, it's all just speculation right now, but this ^ pic of the supposedly new XBOX design doesn't look too high tech, so I doubt thats what it is. Who knows, regardless I can't wait to see what it's all about... lets just hope they make online play free.
There was also this image that was supposedly leaked..
and...
Siri? I can't see Apple licensing that to Microsoft. I would assume it will be a more advanced version of the voice control technology they already use with the kinect.
You can kill a fly with your slipper or a cannon. Either way, the fly dies. -Ramzy
I'm sure that's what he meant lol...
I've heard something along the lines that Kinect would be integrated into the console.
In the link they said siri but who knows.
Yeah I doubt it's Siri.
Microsoft and Apple aren't exactly friends. I don't think Apple would let Microsoft use one of it's most popular technologies.
Ahhh just reread it, they say they're going to have their own version of "siri" in the system. My bustttt.
No biggie...
My guess is it's just going to be an improved Kinect integrated into the console. Kinect already kind of works like Siri where you can say commands and stuff.
the dual shock contoller is the most over heralded piece of crap, its like they made the controller for a younger kid with big meaty man thumbs. under no circumstances should a thumb stick be substantially bigger than your thumb, and its curvature is very conducive to slipping
Excited for it. Just a little disappointed that I won't be able to play my ps1-ps3 games on it. I'll probably do like I did with my ps3 and wait a year after it's release to buy it.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Yeah that's probably my biggest disappointment. I've spent literally hundreds of dollars on software that I can't even use.
On the plus side it means my ps3 won't collect dust like my other systems.
Will the ps4 have an internet browser?
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
They haven't really said I don't think... They are touting all of the social networking capabilities though.
Not sure if that just means they will have a Facebook app or what.
This is all I found on it:

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
I look forward to it but I will probably hold off on buying it until around Christmas 2014. I just put a new 1 TB hard drive in my PS3 so I have tons of storage for the large library of games available. Plus I like it when all of the older gen stuff gets cheap, the only downside is the loss of support and new games.

Agreed.
I was going to get a 500 GB hard drive for my ps3, but someone told me it could potentially damage the system. I guess that's not true.
What type of hard drive did you buy?
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
It was a Seagate, 5400 rpm, 8 mb cache, SATA 6gb/ sec. I got it either at newegg.com or microcenter.com. I can't remember. It took a day and a half, but that is because I had to backup the 256 gb original drive to my external drive before the swap. I looked online for a video and this guy took me step by step through the process. I have had no issues with it and I did the swap about 2 months ago

Do you have a fat ps3 or a slim?
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Slim. Also make sure u get a smaller "laptop" drive. Started this with a regular internal drive b/c I foolishly didn't open the ps3 up first.

Good lord man. Not sure I could ever fill that up.
I just don't think I can wait that long lol. Especially if the launch titles are good.
I have a bunch of games that I haven't even played yet due to my hectic work schedule, but my 256 GB drive was full so I swapped it out with the biggest one I could find.

That's crazy...
If you use it for more than just a gaming system(downloading videos, music, and pictures), I can see the need for the extra space. That, and the installation can take up a lot of GBs(Rage alone requires 8 gbs).
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
That's true.. I guess I don't usually install or download too many games.
I joined Playstation Plus and they have free games every month and you don't have to belong too long before you have a large library of fully downloaded games.

Yes, the PS4 will have a web browser - the new controller looks pretty awesome, they basically took the PS3 controller, PSMove, & Xbox 360 controller & mashed them together while adding a touch pad.
They're using AMD (rumored) chipset which is kinda disappoint, but understandable given Intel's i7s are a lot more expensive than AMD's FX8 series 8-core processors (Which rank 3rd or 4th I believe behind 2 of Intel's i7s & i5s). 8 GB of RAM is great, but they should have more:
Here's the thing I'm REALLY curious about though, & that's if they will allow you to upgrade your system since they're switching to standard PC construction for parts instead of custom designed parts for the system.
That would own.
BTW, I'm a proud PS3 owner - abandoned Xbox 360 after my first two RROD'd. (and I take great care of my systems) - PSN tag: Silence-Asriel - (Madden, NBA 2K13, NCAA, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Battlefield 3, Far Cry 3) If you need an ELITE sniper, I'm your guy. If you REALLY want it in Madden, then please come get some.)
"Leave...Your...Mark..."
When you say upgrade your system, you mean like customizations, right?
I'm sure you CAN but I'm sure it will void any warranty you would have. I mean, there are modded PS3 and Xboxs out there aren't there? (I'm not really into that kind of stuff so I'm not sure)
I had 2 Red Rings of Death also but stuck with it. I bought a PS3 early on bascially just for MGS4. I usually only buy exclusives and single player games for PS3 because most of my friends have Xbox.
Yea, but I don't mean anything illegal. I HATE cheaters, but I mean like if you wanna put more RAM or a faster processor in, you'd be able to. Right now it specs as a mid-high grade gaming PC - and PC gamers have elitist tendencies (for good reason though.) I've even considered switching to PC gaming solely because of the system upgrades & mods you could make like adding guns or character skins to games if you've got the skill to do it without breaking the game.
I LOVED Metal Gear Solid on the PSX, one of the reasons I've stuck with Playstation through the years. I played all the Halo's accept 4 so far, & 2 of the Gears of War, but other than those, I don't feel like I'm missing much on the 360. Most of the titles I play are cross platform & all my friends have PS3.
You plan on picking up Revengeance for rental? (It's only 4-5hrs long so I don't think it's worth a buy, IMO, but looks fun as hell)
"Leave...Your...Mark..."
I gotcha.. yeah that would be interesting if they allow that. I'm sure they will make it harder than hell to get into lol.
I'm kind of the same way, but opposite... if that makes sense lol. The only Xbox exclusives I kind of like are Gears and Halo. But I'm not even into those games as much as others. I like PS3's exclusives a bit more.. Like I said, MGS4 is basically why I got a PS3. Uncharted is pretty good and so is Heavy Rain and Infamous. Too bad I won't be able to play them on the PS4.
I actually just bought Revengeance today haha.. So I'll be playing it tonight. I had a few games I wanted to trade in so I bought that and put some money down on Bioshock. GameStop as a deal going on where you get 50% more trade for games so I figured why not.
It looks fun but it's still a little ways off of what a Metal Gear game is IMO. It's supposedly cannon so I figured I would play through it.
I'm just glad that the rumor about used games not working on the ps4 was false.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
I agree... I was really doubting that they would do that, but you never know. It's all about money and they feel like they are losing when GameStop sells their games.
I feel like it would turn a ton of people off though... Not something you want to do
I think the idea was that places like gamestop would have to sell you a code to let it work, similar to extra content codes that come with brand new games (or online feature codes like my last NCAA Football game). I doubt it has been forgotten as the game developers will keep looking for ways to get "their" piece of the pie of the used market.

Excited to see all the PS4 has to offer. Can't wait to see the what they will have in store at E3. I have been anti XBox since the 360 came out. It was such an inferior system than the PS3, (hardly next-gen) and because it was simpler, games were developed for it and then ported to PS3. It really held the PS3 down.
PS fanboy says Xbox inferior. Who would have guessed?? What next, Android fanboy badmouthing Apple? Apple fanboy dissing Android? Eye opening comments!
PS fanboy? Please...wake up Alice! You're not in wonderland anymore! I've owned basically every system ever made. I was a big Xbox fan. They still offer a couple of great game series. The point I was making was that the 360 was brought out and was obviously inferior from a hardware perspective. No Bluray, limited USB ports, no memory card readers, etc. I had a buddy go out and buy an external HdDvd drive for his. The point is that the PS3 was a superior piece of electronics. The PS3 was more sophisticated and therefore harder to program for. That's why games are made for Xbox360 and then ported to PS3. The fact that the 360 still uses DVD is telling. What amount of content of games are left off (or added as DLC) solely because it won't fit on a DVD.
Just read an article where a developer said the next Xbox will use watermarked discs to prevent the sale of used games....
Just wondering what you guys thought of that.
To me, that's a MAJOR turn off. I want to be able to swap games with my friends and trade them in if I don't use them anymore.
You would think MS would be the last company to do that.
I buy used games now more than I ever did during the ps2 era. If games were $29.99 and $39.99 like they were in the early-mid 2000s, i'd buy them new more often.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Yeah if it's true, I think it would be suicide for Microsoft.
Here's the link to the article from GameInformer.
By doing this they would be conceding this generation to the Ps4 and Wii U.
