OT - Oscar Pistorius/Reeva Steenkamp

Just wanted to get the opinion of the 11W community.

What a terrible story. Really sad. What a beautiful girl.

Do you think it was an accident like Pistorius says, or do you think it was murder? We may never know.

ok, that was funny. maybe a little wrong, but that was just funny...

as for that poor girl getting shot by him:

I would say it was an accident, because he thought it was an intruder. But, let's wait to see what unfolds. Apparently, there may have been domestic abuse involved before, so that makes you wonder. Too early to tell. Bizzare story, especially being that it occured on Valentine's Day.

Sounds like a stone cold murder to me...I think he has since admitted the intruder thing to be BS.

Things are coming out now about some texts/nature of a relationship with a rugby player sparking a fight.  Shot through a door multiple times.  Then used a cricket bat.  Allegedly found steroids in his house.  At this point pure speculation but sounds like a combo roid rage, jealously rage, carbon rage...

Got it.  There's the out.  Defense will say he inhaled the carbon fibers from his blade runners over the years and it gave him a chemical imbalance in his brain.  Otherwise, guy sounds like a killer.

Very early, but initial reports make the O.J. case seem like an Agatha Christie mystery. Even the wording of the Pisotrius reps was awkward; how do you "accidentally" shoot someone four times? Sketchy at best.

bigbadbuck's picture
bigbadbuck on 16 Feb 2013 - 1:37am #

Well if it was dark and Oscar gets startled awake. He calls out "who's there?" and Reeva wants to surprise him maybe for valentine's day, so of course she's not going to answer, he gets spooked and fires the gun and because he doesn't know if he actually shot the intruder, continues to fire his weapon until the chamber is emptied..........That might be a viable way that someone would "accidently" shoot someone 4 times...........I'm not saying thats what happened or that's how it happened, but if does seem plausible..........Time will tell

Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.

South African authorities are dismissing any reports of mistaken identity/home intruder speculation. Pistorius has been charged with premeditated murder, not looking good for him at all.

Real shame.

The real shame is how much we worship someone for their athletic ability without knowing who they really are.

I know. Don't tell that to ESPiN --- they look the other way with people like Ray Lewis, then promote him like he's a saintly role model.

There really are no pure human heroes.  Everyone has some stain somewhere.  It's best to either admire fictional figures or admire only certain aspects of a person's life like Lance Armstrong's drive, or Ray Lewis's passion, or Woody Hayes's work ethic.

This bastard is guilty! Who "accidentally" shoots someone 4 times?! Roid rage + like many famous athletes, he thinks he's invincible. Was watching Greta Van Susteren earlier - a bloody bat was found in the house. And, apparently, he was mad she was texting another guy...neighbors heard them arguing. Sounds like rage and jealousy out of control.

Yes, the fact that neighbors could hear a loud argument, and Reeva locked herself into the bathroom (obviously to get away from him/the situation)... and then minutes later four shots were fired.

Does not look good for Pistorius, as I don't see how his story will hold up in court.  Also, if there is any evidence of previous domestic disputes, it would be hard for him to get out from under this charge.

Not in any way defending him- and firing through a door in almost any situation where you don't know your target is inexcusable- and I think it will turn out to have been intentional, but if just want to say that if you shoot someone accidentally it will likely be with a substantial number of rounds.

When you have elected to shoot, you shoot until the opponent has ceased any and all movement or your weapon is empty. You don't stop because they've fallen down. A prone person can still shoot you. You also have absolutely no way to know if any of your rounds have actually hit or wounded the target. You don't know if the target is lightly injured, dropped prone without being injured, or has a wound that will eventually kill them but does not immediately incapacitate them.

If he had, for example, seen a shadow and fired at what he believed was an intruder then it would be reasonable for him to fire at that intruder until movement stopped. Four hits in five shots is perfectly within the norm in terms of number of shots. However, it is actually phenomanal shooting, especially through a door. One shot in five hitting is the average in actual handgun combat situations.

That being said, it is absolutely inexcusable to fire through a door at an unknown target or to fire at a shadow without having first ascertained the exact location of anyone you know is in the house.

I'm sure this will turn out to be some sort of argument and murder, but I wanted to clear up that in a case where somebody accidentally shoots someone, four times would not be unusual.

So... "wanted to get the opinion of the 11W community" or created under that false pretense so that you could post several follow-up "jokes?"
For the record, the zingers don't offend me but the phony lead in was unnecessary and a slight towards the intelligence of the aforementioned 11W community.

Is it that time of the month, "ABOY..."?
Wow. You get offended easily, and you need to get a thicker skin. I didn't know follow-up jokes were illegal. Sheesh.
"Phony lead-in"? Haha come on man...get over yourself.
I'm thinking you have to be the only person on 11W feeling your intelligence was slighted. That is beyond weak. You're not that intelligent if that's the case. Lighten up.

I just prefer folks to be honest. You are being disingenuous. I called you out. End of story.

And I love the irony of being told to "get a thicker skin" by the kid who posts an entire thread in regards to "finding a downvoter."

If it was an intruder and he heard a noise coming from the bathroom and your GF (who lives with you and/or spends a lot of time at your place) isn't anywhere else in the house wouldn't you at least ask, "Honey, is that you?" first, before firing 4 times into the door? If it were an intruder, wouldn't you lock that person in there and call the police? They're already detained.

The police are getting their premeditation thing from that fact. He's sort of helpless without his carbon legs. What better way to deflect the blame than to make himself look like the victim. Big bad athlete was afraid of a cute blonde supermodel. She's the predator! :-/

This reeks of foul play.

Yeah, its crazy to be shooting through a door. Even if it is an intruder, how do you know its not some drunk 18 year old who just broke in and passed out?

Standard tactical for a possible intruder in your house is to gather all family members/household residents together, lock yourselves in one room, then contact the police. That way you know you've accounted for everybody you care about. If someone tries to open the door then you shout a warning and let them know you have contacted the police, have a gun, and will fire if they continue to attempt to open the door.

You NEVER EVER go through the house looking for an intruder.

Not sure if the bathroom in question is in his bedroom or down a hall. If down a hall, his correct move would have been to lock his bedroom door and contact the authorities. If in his bedroom, he should have contacted the authorities, pointed his gun at the door, and shouted to the intruder that he had contacted the authorities, had a gun, and would fire if they tried to exit the bathroom.

I can't think of any tactical situation where firing four shots through a closed door with an unknown target is acceptable.

So even if we give him the benefit of the doubt in assuming he thought it was an intruder, that still makes him guilty of extreme stupidity and negligent homicide. and that's at best. Hard to see this not turning out to be flat out murder.

He really doesn't have a leg to stand on when it comes to this case.

Also, if I'm not mistaken-weren't steroids found in his home? Another shining example of the Olympics being the most crooked thing ever in the history of everything.

Just heard on America's Newsroom  that police found testosterone and needles in his bedroom. This dude is likely guilty, i.m.o..

Agree with previous posters' comments about the I.O.C.. They remind me of another international brand that is a colossal failure and joke - the U.N.. Although probably not as much of a waste of your tax dollars, the I.O.C. is still good at being a crew of flunkies.
