OT: Need advice about running related foot pain

A while back there was a thread about working out\physical development and I saw a lot of good stuff out there so I'm not nervous about cracking open the 11W resource for some advice. I am in my second go round of the Insanity work out programs and today noticed a pretty good amount of pain in the arches of my feet. Anyone who has done the workout can attest to the amount of running in place, or some variation of it-and the more I had to hit\leave the ground, the worse it got. The jumping wasn't as bad but the running was particularly tough. I switched shoes and even gave bare foot a go-all to no avail.

Any runner types out there experience the same thing? It was frustrating because I felt the workout lacked, but because of my feet, not entirely because of my cardio. Any help would be appreciated.

Although there are some bad things that arch pain can be (plantar fasciitis being the main one), it's most commonly jus tendinitis. This is especially true if you've recently upped your running, which it sounds like you have.

Recommend:

1) Icing if the pain is still there. Twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off a few times a day.

2) A few days rest

3) going to a running store or doctor and discussing better shoes or orthotics.

try 1 and 2 before worrying about 3.

Hope that helps.

Sounds like plantar fasciitis to me.  If mild, you just need to rest.  Not what you want to hear in the middle of a workout plan, but that is what I would recommend.  That and new tighter fitting shoes with good Achilles support.

good luck

edit: sorry Cplunk, I did not see your post when I was writing.

No worries- I'm not a doctor, so I'm not the be-all authority. My medical knowledge all comes from the fact that thanks to boxing and soccer I've had every injury possible, most of them twice....

I recommend unnecessary use of the foot as soon as possible. My dad went through both problems that cplunk details, and the tendonitis actually ended up being more serious because he didn't rest it. With foot problems, you can never be too cautious.

Getting old is a b*tch.  Both my wife and I have had symptoms you describe.  Best advice we have gotten is from our Chiropractor.  Running/workout shoes come in many different styles and shapes.  No one shoe is perfect for everyone.  As we age, our requirements for support in a shoe will vary.  Fitting a shoe to your workout is a must for healthy feet.  We ended up going to a good shoe store and working with a knowledgeable fitter to get us into the right shoe for proper support in our workouts.  In short, the shoe must fit if you want to get fit!

And remember, just because you find one model that is right for you does not mean that every pair of that make/model will work.  You need to look at each pair and make sure they are properly constructed.  i.e. When you place the shoe on a flat surface it should rest flat on the surface without noticeable curls or imperfections, stuff like that.  You may pay more for your shoes, but a reputable shoe store should allow you to return shoes that do not meet your expectations within the first few weeks.  And, shoes wear out more quickly than you might expect.  If you are into heavy workouts (like you have described) most any shoe may need to be replaced in 6 months (before you see noticeable degradation of the soles and uppers.)

For anyone suffering from plantar fasciitis:

STRASSBURG SOCK!!  http://www.thesock.com

This was recommended to me by fellow runners who have gone through plantar fasciitis.  Truthfully, after about 3 nights of wearing the sock, the pain was significantly reduced, and, a week later, gone.  Even when I would try to induce the pain by standing on my toes... it was gone.

(Previously to that) I had seen a doctor who recommended (to which I strictly complied):

  • NSAID topical gel twice a day
  • An aircast
  • Electric stimulation with ice
  • Foam roller on whole lower body
  • Roll foot on tennis ball
  • Vitamin D

After about a month of staying off of it, I could feel the pain decreasing.  But about 10 minutes into my first run back, the pain was back.  I returned to the doctor and asked about the Strassburg sock and they said they had never heard of it.  Hmmpf.  Get it online or at a local running store.

Please message me if you have any questions about the sock.  I'm not salesman, just a very happy customer.

Some good advice on here, but you need to get a proper diagnosis before you can develop a treatment regimen. If you are doing things to alleviate plantar fasciitis, but you actually have a pulled muscle/tendon/ligament, etc. then you aren't going to find relief.

Go to a podiatrist.

Get a proper diagnosis.

Once you have a diagnosis evaluate his recommendations with those presented on this thread.

Podiatrists don't know everything and there is some good info on here; but it's only good info if you have an accurate diagnosis.

I would definitely recommend getting fitted at a running store; when you go to the doc, let can you let us know the outcome?

PS - Anyone doing the Shamrock?

"Don't put syrup on shit, and tell me it's pancakes"

No matter how sh*tty the tour is, it's always tough to leave.

Shoes are obviously important, but the proper insert is equally if not more important.  FYI, my podiatrist says the Superfeet insoles are the best OTC inserts available.

I have a partially torn plantar fascia and I am going to try "thesock" thing that DBIT recommends, though.  That sounds promising.

Sound advice all around folks. Much obliged.

4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

don't mess around with this - go to a podiatrist. after athletic activity, I had sore arches, along with occasional sore left hip and right knee. The doc took an xray, examined my feet and said I needed more arch support, and that I needed to wear slightly wider shoes to not cramp up the feet. That was a few months ago and now my arches feel much better and I have no more hip or knee issues either. Best $200 I ever spent...

I had a foot injury from running when I lived in Columbus. The sports med doc I went to insisted that I get the right shoes. I went to a running store over on Lane Ave west of Beekman Park by Subway. I don't know if it's still there or not, but that store fitted me for better shoes that fixed my problem.

I went to my podiatrist this past week for a follow-up on my plantar fasciitis. He has me icing my foot for 20 minutes a day, stretching, blah blah, blah.

The day after seeing the podiatrist I went out and bought a pair of Birkenstocks on his advice (he even wrote me a prescription for them so I didn't have to pay tax on them).

Slap me in the face and call me Nancy, but 2 days later my pain has subsided significantly. It's almost gone. They seem to provide the support I need in my foot when I am walking around the house.  I will investigate buying the Birkenstock insoles for my work shoes and running shoes.

FYI, I bought the Birki's (a specific Birkenstock line of footwear) with a padded footbed, which I find much more comfortable than regular Birkenstocks. Birki's also have a wider footbed.

Anyway, you might check Birki's/Birkenstock's out.  They have made all the difference in the world for me.
