NCAA fires VP of enforcement

Sounds like they need to sit out the next couple bowl games with a 2M fine.

Multiple sources familiar with the external investigation said Roe Lach’s dismissal stems from her approving an improper financial relationship between an NCAA investigator and an attorney of former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro. NCAA president Mark Emmert announced on Jan. 23 that the law firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft had been retained to conduct an external review of the association’s "enforcement environment" – notably the relationship between the NCAA and Shapiro attorney Maria Elena Perez.

NCAA sucks, but why are we criticizing them when they are coming as close to being fair and impartial as we have ever seen?

If they continue to act reasonably for, say, 300 years, then they might be able to retrieve their reputation

Because mark fails to take any responsibility for this fiasco yet will hand down punishment for HC who "had no idea". They have been inconsistent and tip toed boundaries and yet act like nothing is wrong when they themselves mess up and this was a massive mess up.

The deadspin article has an outline that's a little easier to follow, as far as the recent firings and departures go.  I also like how they put it: the NCAA has a Lack of Institutional Control.  (I'm sure the investigation of the Fiesta Bowl was all on the up and up too...wink wink.)  Seeing as how their problems are systemic, cutting off a branch here and there is not enough.  It's time to uproot the tree and start over.  Emmert needs to go. They should get their house under control before they try to accuse schools of having a problem.

A lot of folks are calling for "the death of the NCAA"....my question is if not the NCAA, then who?

No sarcasm intended.....genuinely curious who everyone would rather have in place of the NCAA.

Good question. The easy answer is to form a governing body that all of the schools help create and fund but include all types of employees to keep them impartial to one particular school.

Which is what we have already...  I'm not someone who advocates for big government, but honestly that might be an option. That would be a way to somehow keep it impartial (everything can be corrupted though), and reasoning behind it could be a mix of academic performance/antitrust, due to institutions benefiting so much from athletes (esp when getting recruits the wrong way) and keeping money away from others.

I really don't like my idea though, but it's all I could come up with. It seems like there should be some easy model of how to regulate collegiate athletics, but I seriously doubt it more and more each day.

DOTS - my initial thought was to have a governing body or agency which is elected on a periodic basis. Somehow the group has to be more apparent and accountable. However, that might not work out either, seeing how corrupt elections/campaigns can be (for what it's worth I was thinking the university presidents would be the ones casting votes).

I really can't think of any good ideas for better structure.  I think there are two critical issues though. One, I think the depth of the issues goes far deeper than impartiality, in fact, it's so far out of whack I'm not even concerned about impartiality from the NCAA. It just seems practically random. Take the Fiesta Bowl debacle and the NCAA response as a  key example of why I'm not just concerned about impartiality. Two, given how much money and power is inherent in college athletics, mostly football of course, it may be that any structure or system is practically doomed to fail. Especially in a system where so many people contribute so many grubby people can get their greedy hands on the money, while the actual players who basically are the product and put fans in the seats get so little. In other words, many of the bylaws the NCAA enforces are arbitrary at best, so it shouldn't be a surprise that things go awry.

Even with all this doom and gloom, I struggle to see how could be much worse with anyone or anything other than Emmert and Co.

I don't understand the question. Are you looking for something like a different governing body, do you want someone to invent a new entity?

The first step to improvement is recognizing the problem, in particular the root of the problem. The worst thing you can do is decide you don't think there is a solution and just decide you should consequently ignore the problem.

a case of "do as I say, not as I do"

Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.

The investigation is "ongoing." My guess is the NCAA will come out with its findings in the spring, levy more penalties then have the U successfully overturn said penalties in court because if this mess. Miami has already self imposed a 2-year bowl ban and scholly reductions. That very well could be the worst of what happens to them.
