Crazy TSUN Frat Boys

A University of Michigan fraternity has been suspended after sending semi-naked photos of themselves to a sorority as a party invite and calling them whores if not interested in attending.
In the email sent by Pi Kappa Alpha on Wednesday, the Ann Arbor chapter included at least 13 photos of the men posing naked behind American flags while suggesting it as similar attire for the women attending.
In one photo a sandwich is seen used by one man to cover his groin while in another a man partially hides himself behind a keg with the flag seen wrapped around the barrel.

I roomed with a Sigma Chi for two years and dated a 2 year president of Alpha Xi Delta whilest at OSU so I saw the ins and outs of the entire Greek system at OSU. Both people got me access to a side of college life that just didn't interest me. I didn't get the obsession then, I don't get it now.

Not an insult, just a joke. Most of my friends at OSU aren't in Fraternities. As a student at an SEC school (Gave me more $ than OSU did) it's almost mandatory to go Greek if you want something to do on the weekends. Just depends on the school, I have nothing against people that didn't go greek at all.

BrewstersMillions's picture

Nor did I take it as one. Simply expanding upon my stance against the Greek system-its been bad form around these parts for people to say something and not have anything behind it so I'd rather explain myself further than stick stubbornly to an idea without giving direction as to why I feel that way.

Seems pretty tame.  Especially if it was new pledges.  I don't care to look up the specifics, but Miami University has had some sororities/fraternities in the news at least three times in the last 2 years for some pretty bad behavior.

Then there was the race-heated party theme(s) at Duke and somewhere else.

Hail I completely agree, it is tame.

Fraternities and sororities across the country get in trouble daily with their respective universities and national chapters. The crack down has gotten worse as PCism has spread throughout the ranks of college administrations. At least at Miami, I know several of the incidents you reference wouldn't normally become national stories if not for the new President David Hodge (total loser and likely virgin) sensationalizing the stories in an attempt to make an example of the chapters that have been punished. As he is openly leading a crusade to effectively destroy the greek system at that school, which as a side note is a shame because the greek system there has contributed a significant amount to the schools culture and reputation.

Using Miami as an example I will get to my point, two neighboring fraternities get in a friendly bottle rocket/roman candle fight, cops go into the houses and find some (ok fine a alot of) pot and paraphernalia. Wait kids in college smoke pot now a days? The horror, the shock, WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!!!!! What will their parents, children of the 70's, think? As another example, take the ladies of Pi Phi from Miami and the infamous letter that shook the bedrock of the greek system. For starters, having attended their formals in the past I can say that nothing in that letter was surprising or shocking, and I'm positive ALL of it was grossly exaggerated. That was more a case of poor planning, they went to an uber conservative Christian affiliated wedding hall in a bible rich part of the state and decided to have booze filled party there the day before a huge wedding. Horrible idea from the start, bad judgment all around, that said nothing that happened there was any different then what occurs across college campuses nationwide 5-6 and for some 7 nights a week greek affiliated or not.

While I understand some people are "anti-greek" and thats fine they are entitled to their opinions, I just hope that people who lean toward that side realize its just not frat bros and sorority girls that do dumb and often times offensive things in college. I for one hope hope those UM kids DO NOT get in any trouble, they sent racy pics in an effort to woo women, so what? I'm not saying fraternity and sorority kids deserve a free pass, often the punishments they get absolutely fit the infractions and are well deserved. I am just hoping that the "going greek is evil and destroys the moral fiber of society" train de-rails and or preferably explodes, because I for one think that a lot of positives come out of being in a fraternity or sorority. That said, everyone should take that for what its worth as its admittedly coming from a former fraternity guy.

Agreed. Such is the ultra-sensitive, touchy, PC world we live in today.
There's always somebody melodramatic enough to find a way to be offended by something that doesn't affect them. If it were the sorority complaining, then there may be a story. Actually, no. It still wouldn't be worth it. Stop the world...I wanna get off.

The flag should not be used as "wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery"....or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins).

The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

Here's a link, though a true patriot like yourself surely knew this.

The lack of flag etiquette is appalling. Any veteran of our military or Boy Scout would be ashamed of the treatment of the flag in this case.

From USFlag.org:

Flag Etiquette
STANDARDS of RESPECT
The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

1.) The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
2.) The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
3.) The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.
4.) The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
5.) The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
6.) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

Well, it also says:

When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

So basically, the floor is lava for the flag? I'm sorry, but the reverence for a piece of cloth is a tad overblown.

This is much ado about nothing.

Sad that this is the fraternity that I was in 2 years ago. Did four years with Pike and what else could you say besides its just a fraternity being a fraternity. Honestly this is harmless to some of the things I have heard of our chapter on other campuses or other chapters doing on other campuses. Our Nationals I guess wasn't playing around.

I was Greek in college and anyone else that was can probably agree that your house is usually pretty close with at least a sorority or two. The article says nothing about them actually being offended. They probably thought it was just as funny as the guys did but the Greek life office probably found out and had to do something to save face. I don't really see any harm in it unless the sorority was sincerely offended. I have done plenty of crazy things during my time.

1. I think you misplaced this and meant it to be near my flag post.

2. Don't need to read any flag code to know that I don't approve of screwing around near the flag like they were (allegedly) doing.

3. I am militant when it comes to the American Flag.  While I do not think that it should be illegal to disrespect or deface the American Flag, I think anyone who deliberately does so is a piece of sh*t.

I assumed that my post was unclear when I saw the juxtapositioning of your reply.

The PC Nazis I was speaking of were the administrators who tracked down drunk frat boys acting like drunk frat guys and though you may be tired of the Nazi card, it is a perfect analogy for overzealous central administrators concerned primarily with their maintenance and exercise of power. If it trivializes the Nazis then that is okay also; the less respected that they are, the better.

I think that disrespect of the flag is far more objectionable than being drunks, though I think that stupidity and thoughtlessness are not actionable offenses.
