Unbelievable...
A 65-year-old woman recently came under suspicion, she reported, for having a Buckeye leaf decal on her car. The cops mistook it for a marijuana symbol.
“It’s just amazing they would be that dumb,” Bonnie Jonas-Boggioni said.

My mom lives in Knoxville now. I guess I better forward this to her, she may want to remove her Buckeye stickers as well.
Don't let those Johnny Rebs bully you or your mother. Leave them on.
I agree, I forgot the sarcasm font...lol.
I sent this to my mom and she got a real kick out of it.
The scary part was not that the officers were "that dumb," as Bonnie Jonas-Boggonio said, but that their stupidity was on steroids.
Actually, the episode described in this story might be seen as a microcosm for several rising trends in law enforcement and related matters, which might not bode well for our future. I'd explain what I mean, but then I'd have to wade into political waters.
So, I will simply contemplate on my own: On what legal basis was the car pulled over in the first place?
There was none. It was an illegal search.

It was an illegal seizure; it doesn't sound like they actually performed a search.
Exactly. I think we know one another btw.
Oh yeah?
Yep. My screen name should make it clear.
Look, I respect the police, for many reasons(hard job, I have a brother and brother in law on the force, etc), but even if granny had a marijuana leaf on her window, is no grounds for a strip search.
Maybe granny has a prescription from her doctor?
"Here officer, hold my beer while I find my license."
You can have a sticker of a crack pipe and a heroin needle on your car and it would not be grounds for a traffic stop. But if an officer follows you long enough they can usually find a violation to stop you for.
On a side-note...my daughter played softball for a traveling team and her batting helmet is silver which we then decorated with the Buckeye helmet stickers (left side only of course). She was questioned several times by other players why she was advocating marijuana with the stickers. I guess if it can happen in Ohio in can happen out of state.
at graduation one of my friends from houston thought OSU advocated mary jane too from the cup decoration they sell... seriously people.
I like football
The Buckeye leaf does kind of look like marijuana...lol...just sayin'. Not grounds for a traffic stop though - that part is stupid.
Class of 2010.
You guys are missing the real tale of stupidity here!
It's one thing to be dumb and arrogant enough to mistake the buckeye leaf for a marijuana leaf and pull someone over. It's another thing to blatantly disregard basic civil rights and perform an illegal search based on your misinterpretation of the leaf, which I have no doubt Ms. Jonas-Boggioni informed the officer(s) as such upon their inquiry.
The real dumb-ass-attack occured when the officer(s) admitted that the reason for the traffic stop and subsequent search was because they thought the buckeye leaf was a marijuana leaf. How can someone be that DUMB!?!?!?!? Isn't that grounds for suspension in the law enforcement world?
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
It should be!!!
"Get him a body bag, Yeah!"
I think the story has been has been lost in translation from the driver to the reporter. IF the officers stopped her only due to the sticker, anything they found would not be admissible in court. So if the driver happened to have 100lbs of weed in her trunk it would be "fruits from a poisonuous tree". All it would take would be a vehicle defect, not using a turn signal, or some other minor violation to stop the vehicle and make contact with the driver....then you ask about the sticker and its meaning.

Wow! Just wow.
On the run from Johnny Law...ain't no trip to Cleveland.
Sweet. My motorcycle helmet is decked out in these and I live in Shelby county. We'll see what happens.
Lived in Florida after I graduated from OSU...this happened to me several times

These sort of stops are going to become more common. With Ohio State going into Tennessee (or Georgia) and "stealing" Vonn Bell, police are going to be searching all vehicles to make sure Ohio State doesn't steal more recruits.
The police had a legitimate reason for the stop. She didn't have the proper DOT COMBUSTIBLE placard that all vehicles must display when transporting hazardous material.

ridiculous
I have an osu hat with just the buckeye leaf on it, people i work with at first thought it was a pot leaf.
about 10 years ago, a buddy of mine was interviewing to be a "Big Brother"; when the interview was done, the lady said he looked lije a good candidate, but shouldn't wear hats with marijuana leaves if he wanted to be a big brother.
He had to explain it was a Buckeye hat.
