watching a bit of the Michigan vs South Carolina Bowl game which started at 1:00pm ET on ESPN. Within the first 1/2 hr of the game broadcast, ESPN runs a commercial for a movie called "Texas Chainsaw". With moms and dads sitting around watching some football on New Year's Day, possibly with kids wanting to watch the game as well, ESPN should have better judgement than to air these ads which show a terrified lady bound and gagged with a chainsaw being rubbed on her ear. WTF , I don't need to see the images in those commercials, my kids sure as heck don't either.

Welcome to American TV, where violence is perfectly okay to be seen by everyone, but how dare anyone see a nipple of a natural human being, *gasp*.
I told my 6 year old to close his eyes.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
Sounds to me like you're a little too sensitive. Ads like that are nothing new and no one forces you to watch them.
okay, so let our children know it is alright to for grown adults to show a bound and gagged woman about to be murdered by a chainsaw.....for entertainment sakes.
Next time it's on, I'll tell my kid to quit being a baby and watch the sh!t. If he doesn't like seeing a maniac put another man's cut-off face on his face, like a mask, he doesn't have to watch. I'll also be sure that he knows he is too sensitive, when he has nightmares and is afraid of the dark.
ESPN has no other choice than to place these ads during a 1:00pm football game.
I knew I was going to get reaction like that. You're probably right. We should have commercials for gummi bears and Legos during football games. I mean it is marketed towards children anyway. The on-field violence and injuries are perfect for young children though, right? Life is violent and graphic man, why try to hide it?
I get your view.
Football is a sport. Murder is crime.
I wish American TV was more like European TV... nudity on cable network!! ha
Football is totally non-violent, great call.
yeah, the football players are duct-taping the cheerleaders mouths closed, handcuffing them and are going to chainsaw them... how silly of me not to notice.
You had me at duct tape and hand cuffs. ;)
“Right now, Michigan is not at the pinnacle of college football, and that’s all Urban Meyer cares about...He’s been there and knows what it takes to get there.”
I wonder this game were on ABC or Fox if you would still hold this view. Sounds like just another reason to crap on ESPN.
Did you even read the post?
I'm starting to think Cincy works for E!SPiN. He gets upset anytime anyone on here say something about them.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Rumors have circulated that Cincy = Mark May

Does Cincy hate ND?
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Cajun - Really? Kind of a low blow there.
And Buckeyesvstheworld...I could really care less. As much as my "sticking up for ESPN" may irk some ppl...the conspiracy theorists irritate me 10x more. But for some reason it is ok for you ppl to throw your biased opinions out there, but I can't have my own??? Seems off to me.
You have to have a sense humor to post on 11Warriors!!!! Your right, that one was below the belt.
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
If it irritates you that much, you should work on your emotions.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Cincy -
You should know better than posting something that the faithful party members have determined is verboten:
ESPN: VERBOTEN
U Meyer recruiting strategy criicism: VERBOTEN
Good naben and Heil
ABC=ESPN
How he doesn't know that is beyond me.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
And I'm well aware of the ABC = ESPN. No one ever craps ABC. The point still stands...had the OP seen this commercial on any other channel than ESPN, this topic would not have been created.
You know him well enough to make that statement?
If ABC = ESPiN it wouldn't matter anyway since they're the same. :/
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
sorry, you are wrong. I was watching a college football game on ESPN. I commented on 11W, because I like to watch football/basketball games, and comment on those games, quite often.
I have never seen a commercial for Texas Chainsaw on NICK, while watching Sponge Bob with my kids.
Your comments might be believable if not for your anti-ESPN signature.
And why on earth would Nick carry that same ad? Come on man...its about the demographic they are trying to reach.
I don't want either of my kids to have to see images of an adult woman in obvious distress, bound and gagged with a chainsaw rubbing her ear. This while relaxing New Year's Day watching College Football Bowl Games.
Not too hard to understand, jack.
Have a downvote from me to enjoy.
Funny thing is, if it had been a different network, it's actually CINCYOSU who wouldn't have commented-based on him coming to the rescue for ESPN every time it is mentioned in a thread.
Funny how I get singled out when there are MANY others who share my same view. Check out the other anti-ESPN thread about the UA game for proof. But keep getting mad at me for making sense.
I had already read it before commenting here. You weren't mad at the other guy for singling you out for the exact same reason. Only difference, of course, was that he mentioned he shared your same opinion. If ESPN is mentioned you always comment and usually a lot (even when it isn't about ESPN, which this is not--it's more about violence on TV during a football broadcast). Just an honest observation that was hard to miss.
I assume you're referring to me, in which case you're off base. I singled out cincy because he and I are both long term posters on this site, and I know that he shares my beliefs on the issue, not because he is known or should be stigmatized for his views.
That said, I don't think this thread should've devolved into an ESPN argument, because that was unfounded. I also don't think this thread should be an argument at all. Different people will inherently have different opinions about parenting, but just because you don't agree doesn't mean it's your place to tell another person he's wrong when he's simply concerned for his children.
Actually when the OP starts a thread with ESPN in it, and he has anti-ESPN remarks in his signature...it is about ESPN. I never said I thought it was OK for children to see that ad. I simply said had this been on ABC or Fox that this thread would not have been created. It is my opinion(the anti ESPN crowd is allowed to have one)...I never personally attacked anyone, yet I was sent to downvote hell for whatever reason.
And it is common courtesy to let ppl know when you edit your original comments.
I'm not disagreeing with you Pam, but while ABC & ESPN are owned by the same parent company, what many seem to forget is that ABC is a broadcast network and as such is held to a stricter standard than is ESPN that airs content on basic cable packages. Fair or not, Broadcast channels have always had a more buttoned-up approach to content and advertisements.
“Right now, Michigan is not at the pinnacle of college football, and that’s all Urban Meyer cares about...He’s been there and knows what it takes to get there.”
Dont have any issues with commercials about horror films... just a movie...dont want the kids to see the movie, dont take them to it... besides, Texas Chainsaw needs all the pub it can get, thought that movie was garbage
Totally with you on this, John. Had to tell my kids to look away.
These are the same people who issue unsolicited PSAs telling the rest of us how we should politically respond to Sandy Hook.
Don't feed the beast. Unplug.
I assume it's simply that these slots are in primetime, and primetime on a holiday happened to be when the kids were still awake.
I suppose soon enough that I wil have to explain what happens when an erection lasts for over 4 hours, Thank you Cialis.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
I agree with this John. My wife and I talk about this all of the time. It is a shame that this is a problem. I enjoy watching sporting events with my family and would like it even more if I wasn't afraid of stuff like this.
Totally ridiculous movie preview. That stuff doesnt leave your mind.
John is bringing up a great point. Its not so much that you all cant handle the image, its that tons of young kids are watching football with their families. Why cant ESPN have some respect for them?
I would argue that no one should be desensitized to an image like that.
Doesn't Disney own the four letter? That makes in funny.

That movie is going to be garbage, The previous one made just a few years ago were decent, but this is just a dumb gore movie made for the 3d audience. R. Lee Ermy made those last few movies, along with Jessica Biel in a wifebeater.

I'm with you on this John (and others). Let ESPN know: http://espn.go.com/espn/contact
I'm sure there are parents in ESPN offices that agree with you too.

Dear omitted,
Thank you for giving us an opportunity to respond.
This is a product category that has received an acceptance in television, and the specific spot cleared ESPN's advertisement standard review.
We appreciate your feedback and have shared your comments with our advertising and programming executives.
Sincerely,

ESPN
They don't appear to be concerned.
They are, sure as snot, quick to call acts of violence, like classroom/movie theater shootings, terrorist strikes and player suicides unfathomable, senseless, mind boggling and tragic.....
It appears to me that greed trumps moral and social responsibility once again. I'm with original poster. I love violence and action/fantasy movies but I am an adult who can process that information and can disassociate myself from the characters and fiction. Children can't and a more conservative commercial should have been made for that time slot.
I got the same form letter. :)
I am normally in the boat of people being too over-sensitive about this stuff. Not this time, that commercial is freaky. My 5 year old already heard at school that some bad man came into a class and killed a bunch of people, she doesn't need to see this graphic footage like that right now, or ever.
I do get the other side and refuse to downcote, I've been there and have had the same opinion many times. The combo of that commercial and having school age children has provoked a different response.
You can certainly tell who have kids and who don't in this thread
Airtime for commercials like this is purchased. When it's purchased, it is often purchased for a specific time, for instance, during the Outback Bowl. As long as the content is deemed suitable for daytime audiences (which is a matter of opinion obviously), the network really has no say over when they air it, once the company has purchased the time slot - actually, they are contractually obligated to air it when they said they would... I'm not bothered by the commercials & I do have a young daughter. Of course I'd rather she didn't see that stuff, but the world is what it is, attempts to shelter her from everything on TV will be futile...

Understood brother, but change has to start somewhere. These images are seeds. As parents we are required to nurture our children not expose them to the elements. I am sure that Tebows parents aren't disappointed about sheltering him as he grew. I'm not arguing just providing a different outlook or opinion. I know by your previous posts that you are very even keeled and personable and will see this post for what it is. Thanks man.
I hear you & respect it 100%. I mentioned more in detail below...and thanks to you as well.

11W has now turned into a parenting website where we can get advice and suggests on how to raise children. When I have kids, I'm gonna make sure 11W helps to me to be a better parent because this issue is something I would completly lookover. Moreover, I'm gonna need some advice on how to feed him/her Buckeye Kool-Aid so that when they grow up, they will be as Nutty as we all are.
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
The point of the thread was to express one person's frustration for a pointless need to show extreme violence in a commercial. It's a family event, please let those who have a family be able to watch it without fearing whatis shown between the game clips..
You can explain the violence of the game, but the images of that commercial stays with kids. It's not neccessary, nor is it at all needed...
After the recent events involving horrific violence against young children makes this more of an issue now. It is difficult for parents to explain to little ones and tame their fears. At this time something like that could cause more stress on the kids. Mine are all grown but I feel for the parents that have to deal with these issues with their kids.
Both ESPN and the NCAA have control over the content of the ads. Yes the ads are sold and, of course, there's a contract. But ESPN always retains the right to not air content that violates its published Advertising Standards and Guidelines. ESPN ad contracts also stipulate that it is the sole judge of what violates those guidelines. On top of that, ESPN requires that all ad content be submitted 2 weeks prior to its airing to be reviewed.
The NCAA standards are here.
This is how the text usually reads in the contract:
You are right - I mentioned above that the commercials will be aired per the contract so long as the content is deemed appropriate. What is appropriate to air is a matter of opinion. My personal opinion is that as a parent of a 4 year old, I'd rather it didn't air in that time slot but that said, I guess I'm not so bothered by it personally to the point of being offended. But I'm also in video/film production & love horror movies so I tend to take those types of commercials with grain of salt. With the recent events in Conneticut, I certainly do understand why this bothers people.
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
I'm at a loss why anyone would attack a parent who is concerned - in this day and age of violence - about what images his kids see. Do you really want parents to just give up and say "Okay, Johnny - let's watch it all. Find the porn channel. Hey, I'll take you to see women getting chainsawed. Because, you know, it's all make believe and I'm sure your seven-year old brain can sort this all out"?
I realize censorship, etc is a touchy subject but shouldn't we applaud people who are actually trying to be good parents instead of savaging them?
And is there really anything wrong with expecting a network putting on something families will be watching being a little responsible about what they show kiddos? Would it be so bad if the networks actually tried to help good parents who are concerned about this kind of trash?
The truth of the matter is this: Disney wants to butcher your family with a chainsaw. Makes you want to take your kids to Magic Kingdom don't it? Their subliminal advertising on ESPN has you under their control
Remember back in the day during a Tom & Jerry episode where Tom got decapitated? We all thought it was funny then. Itchy and Scratchy? Violence in cartoon form isn't violence!!!!
Now if ESPN would've run a Showgirls II trailer imagine how angry the parents would be? Oh my God! Boobs! Topple the government!!!!!!
(this has been a brief analogy of knee jerk reactions. you may return to your regularly scheduled monotony, thank you).

Watching pieces of the Purdue game was scarier than anything ESPN showed.
The thing that gets me is the people that make these commercials must have kids themselves! They don't even try to imagine what it would be like to be watching a football game with your child and then have something like the Cialis commercial come on for example or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre one come on! To me it just shows that the world we are living in is on a downhill slide..
I was much more offended by AACC's official school commercial during the game. How dare they claim they are a quality school? I had to ask my family to leave the room...
I hope this is sarcasm
I hope so, too.
