Ohio: Diners, Drive-ins & Dives

With all the crappy news about cheats liars and dupes over the last several days, I thought I ask why are there so many Cleveland joints on DD&D's and what other OH joints are worth a visit.

Rudy's is a Toledo icon. It's in the "greasy spoon" catagory, but it's a very good greasy spoon. This is the type of place you go for lunch at work. I love Rudy's. They even have a real juke box in them! And they even sell beer!

Packo's is a more upscale restaurant and world reknown. It's food is more expensive than Rudy's, but it is definitely better. Anytime someone famous come to Toledo, they go to Packo's and sign a "bun," as Bill Cosby did here.

(Olive's) Very good and very small.  Reservations are highly recommended.  Also one of the great dives is Tank's Bar and Grill in Dayton, close to the UD campus.  Best hamburgers and hand cut fries.

Also check out Marion's Piazza, and Mike Sells potato chips... I often send both to friends and family in Texas and Florida at their request.  Dayton is also known for the Pine Club steak house, where Presidents have dined.  Laugh all you want.  We have actually had many sitting Presidents stop in Dayton to dine here.  Try the porterhouse for 2.  Hey, "It's great in Dayton!".

I haven't read the other comments much, so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but I'm pretty sure a place called "Geraci's" in University Heights on the eastside of Cleveland was on Guy's show. When you walk in, he's got his face spray-painted on the wall with a frame around it. The pizza is good to me, out of all the Cleveland pizza places people make a big deal out of (Antonios, Romeos, Mama Santas, Valentinos), I personally prefer Geraci's because the sauce. It's got tomato chunks in it that turn out well when they're baked. And it's just quality stuff, alittle greasy like most everything else you get in Cleveland, but better than the others to me.

I believe Michael Simon's (first top chef winner I believe, host of his own current network show, and owner of a multitude of great dining establishments all over the Cleveland area) heavy influence in the media and with top national chefs and crittics have brought a well-deserved attention to the C-town cullinary arts seen, as he is also good friends with many other budding local chefs. There is quite a list of other food shows as well as DDD that has tapped the local seen, and honestly has still barely touched what it has to offer.

2. Tremont, Tremont, Tremont, the best of everything within a few blocks of each other (including Tai-Phun to add to the more regularly mentioned ones, Sonny the owner makes Thai soup to die for personally made to order, then puts on the most hillarious Kareoke performances to ever be witnessed at The Flying monkey next door)) E. 9th and W. 6 has some goodies as well

Symon didn't win Top Chef; he won the first Next Iron Chef competition, about 5 years ago. His flagship restaurant in downtown Cleveland, Lola (the 4th St. strip between Prospect and Euclid) is unbelievably awesome, but at their prices it's for special occasions only.

Symon used to host this other FN show called Food Feuds, where he attempted to settle arguments between legendary competitors in a particular city. He did one set in Barberton where the two restaurants were the original "Barberton chicken" place, Belgrade Gardens, and one of the local upstarts. I've been to Belgrade, and while it looks a little past its prime from the exterior and in the lobby, the chicken is really first-rate, and the prices are hard to beat.

The Lakewood Melt is great, but really small. We had about a 45 minute wait for a table one day this summer, and it was well after what should have been the lunch rush. Not sure if the other locations have more seating.

I don't think Fieri has done a show in Columbus ever, which is mildly ironic since he was born there (which is doubly ironic since his persona couldn't be less Midwestern).

I know I posted G&R but there's a little sports bar dive just on the outskirts of Waldo that deserves mentioned too. It's on the south end of town on the east side of the road. Their bologna sandwich is actually better in my opinion. Same bologna from the Delaware meat market but they prepare it differently. Stop in there and try it some time.

Probably don't all count as Diners, Drive-Ins or Dives, but a few of my favorites from the Dayton area:

-Marion's and Casano's Pizza
-DoubleDay's sports bar and grill (centerville)
-Wot-A-Dog Drive-In (New Carlisle)
-Hamburger Wagon (Miamisburg) -->Slider Size steak burgers with Onion, Pickle, and Pepper only...so good!
-Young's Dairy (Springfield) -->More of a Dessert destination with entertainment, but they have good food, as well.

I like Dixie because it's so meaty, it's not as watery as Skyline, it also has a little more heat to it than the Skyline variety.  I'm lucky I have both within about 3 miles of my house!  Probably the closest Dixie Chilli if you live in Cincinnati, is in Newport on Monmouth Street.

If you like to cook, I have a killer recipe for homemade Cincinnati style chilli as well.  Of course you could always just buy beef and packets of skyline season as well, or the cans at the store.  My version once again is meatier and it isn't as sweet as Skyline, it's got more heat to it.

Have to give a shout for Crabill's Hamburger's in Urbana. Absolutely nothing in common with sliders other than size. Mustard makes them special as well as the grease they are fried in. Grab a bag of Mumford's chips with them.

Crabill's must be experienced to be believed. Bellying up to the 8 person counter and watching the fry cook drop wads of ground beef into a four inch deep pool of grease, and then seeing them bob up to the top when finished...holy Christ what a meal. Order three to four of those puppies with cheese, mustard, and onion with a bag o' Mumford's (which are the best chips in the state; and you can get them down the road at their hq in five pound boxes) and a Stewart's root beer...you're in heaven.

They literally double-bag carry-out orders because the bags become so inundated with grease that they tear.

Ray Ray's ribs are good, but their grass-fed brisket on Sundays is absolutely rapturous. Not to mention the Dogfish Head sauce that it comes with.

My dad makes better ribs than Ray Ray's: 48 hour soak in apple cider vinegar, dry rubbed and smoked four around 4 hours at ~250 over applewood chunks and charcoal, then lightly basted with a tomato-mustard sauce and finished on the grill.  As he says, it'll make grown ladies weep and grown men fight.

I just drooled.....details please, babyback ribs, Canadian homone free pork? Nothing else in the apple cider vinegar for the marinade? What's in the rub? The tomato-mustard sauce sounds brilliant - how does he make that? I promise to keep the recipe a secret.....

hodge's picture
hodge on 8 Feb 2013 - 11:41am #

Haha he uses baby backs for the ribs, I'd imagine that if you had the cash to spring for Heritage pork, you wouldn't be disappointed--but that stuff is expensive.

Yeah, the marinade's merely apple cider vinegar, though I honestly don't know his recipes for the rub or sauce, but the method described will yield tasty results, besides it's kinda fun that you get to make the recipe your own. I know for a fact that my dad came across a similar recipe and tweaked it to his liking. Hell, I made a pretty good BBQ sauce by deglazing a pan that I cooked some hamburgers in with beer and adding garlic, stadium mustard, and ketchup, then reducing till thick.

causeicouldntgo43's picture
causeicouldntgo43 on 8 Feb 2013 - 12:23pm #

You are right sir (said in my best Ed McMahon response to Johnny Carson voice) - the method in how you cook something is really what is important. I like the sauce you made on the fly - would work well on an episode of "Chopped"! Great idea on the stadium mustard as a base for the sauce.

I really like a good mustard based sauce, but finding a good one that isn't overly sweet is difficult. In SEC country (think Maurice's in Columbia), they just use French's mustard and lots of honey or brown sugar. I like that about as much as Urban getting his punter swiped at the last minute from some ego-maniacal pledge pin spitting coach who already has 4 punters.

Manlio's is by far my favorite pizza.  You can eat in but there are only a few tables so the space is limited.  My fiances family loves the Brier Hill pizza but im not a big fan and just like to stick with a large pepperoni from Manlio's!

We now live in Ashtabula in the summer.  Urban still eats there when he is in town.  As a matter of fact, one of his best high school buddies owns it

Fitzy's Diner on Schrock Road in Columbus. A damn fine greasy spoon that serves breakfast 24-7. Great to hit after the bars close.

Just went to Al "bubba" bakers BBQ last weekend and the pulled pork dinner there was one of the best I have ever had. I highly recommend it if you are out near Avon OH

Here's a few of my favorite Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives in Columbus:

  • Hang Over Easy: it's a diner/bar on campus that serves up the best greasy-spoon breakfasts in town (plus a solid selection of beverages to wet your whistle).   Stellar food, with some really creative menu items to complement their well-made traditional food.  When I'm in town, I almost always hit this place up.  Their corned beef hash is a must have, get it with sunny-side-up eggs and a cup of coffee laced with bourbon.
  • Katalina's: a former 1950's-era auto repair garage with little seating that offers up all-day breakfast and cheffy riffs on paninis and sandwiches.  Awesome place in the summer, as they have a patio that literally triples available seating.  Try the breakfast tacos, the sweet and spicy bacon, or literally anything on their specials board.
  • Yellow Brick Pizza: thin-crust pie in a slightly sketchy neighborhood serving up an exceptionally well-curated draft list (bonus, there's a tavern that's opened across the street).  My favorite pie in the city, the J-Money is stellar (pep and 'shroom with buffalo sauce).
  • Taqueria Los Guachos: A literal hole-in-the-wall that serves up Tacos Al Pastor, roasted on a spit with pineapple, cilantro and onion--it's an orgy of flavor.  They also do chicken, beef, tongue, and tripe tacos, as well as offering them and the al pastor in a variety of other riffs.  Make sure to try their taco al pastor, and the volcanes al pastor (two open faced fried corn tortillas, with al pastor meat, pineapple, and melted cheese...heaven).
  • Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace: Cheap hot dogs with a myriad of toppings, greasy spoon tots and appetizers, and an awesome craft beer list--you really can't go wrong.  Try their Chicago Dog and Sarva's Tot-cho Dog (tator tots, cheese sauce, jalapeno, and onion).

If you're in Columbus and you love BBQ, you have to try Ray Ray's Hogpit in Clintonville. The sides aren't the best but the meats are to die for and sauces are scrumdilly'umtious! MY staple is the ribs smothered in a combination of sweet bbq and carolina vinegar. Much to my dismay they are only open fri, sat, sun.

Giovanni's but ony the original in Coal Grove, Ohio.  The Freezette there used to have the best footlong hotdogs in the world, but they sold out and the new owners do not make the same sauce so it was a dissapointment when I tried one last time I was home.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but Mama Santa's in Cleveland's Little Italy is absolutely fantastic.   Like many other places mentioned, the decor hasn't been updated since about 1965, but the pizza is fabulous.   And the neighborhood is a really cool area.

And if you are ever driving through Wadsworth (you won't be, but whatever) be sure to hit up Marie's Pizza.   Not as good as I remember it when I was a little kid, but still very good eats.

Does anyone know what happened to Migg's in Columbus?  It was a little hole-in-the-wall off of 5th avenue. It had really awesome burgers that were the size of your head.

I hadn't eaten there in years, but when I was back in town a while back a friend told me he thought something happened to the owner and whoever inherited it closed it and sold the property.

Unfortunately most of the really unique places in my home town are all gone. We used to have a little diner in the back of the local drug store that had amazing burgers and shakes before they closed it down. If anyone is ever down visiting the Hocking Hills I highly recommend making a stop at the Pizza Crossing in Logan. Good pizza and subs and the bread sticks are just absolutely amazing.

And if you're looking for desert, swing by Penny's Pastries. Glazed diabetes at its finest.

If one hot summer day while driving through western ohio, you happen to come upon a small town called New Carlisle, do yourself a favor and stop at wotadog and order a footlong coney dog with cheese and onions and make sure to get a rootbeer in a frosted mug. It will change your life. I grew up in New Carlisle and during the summer whenever I visit my parents it is mandatory that I eat there. I've never had a coney dog come close to being as good as those dogs and the rootbeer is second to none.
