I recall Parker being on a Detroit ESPN Radio local show around 12-13 years ago, and he has not improved.  I usually  turned the channel when Parker's show came on, because it always seemed that he was saying things that weren't genuine opinions, but merely things to get reactions.

The fact that Parker went from his horrible Detroit show to ESPN's First Take, is not shocking.  It takes one helluva douche to make Stephen A look thoughtful.

I can't believe there are still questions about a black athlete's being "black enough" and by black reporters no less. Grant Hill was a "Tom" because he had parents that were highly educated, successful  and expected their only son to be too. The myth that you can only be authentically black if you grew up in the hood, had a momma on crack and a daddy in jail, needs to stop being perpetuated by folks like Rob Parker and Jalen Rose. Serena Williams did the crip walk after winnings gold medal in the London Olympics and was widely criticized for being too ghetto. So which is it? Act black (whatever that means) but not too black?

Oh that is just fresh. Skip Bayless' follow up question "What do RGIII's braids mean to you" is even better. I am in awe of the sheer stupidity exhibited on this show but that has to be, without a doubt the most ignorant exchange ever let loose on the air waves.

I do know what he is hinting at here, I won't pretend to be something I'm not as I grew up in a pretty nice suburb of Chicago. My father is a self employed Dry Cleaner who owns 2 (and had as many as 4) stores in various parts of Chicago's south and west sides. I grew up in and around those stores having worked there for large parts of my child hood. I can tell you from personal experience that based on the vague definition of 'blackness' Rob Parker is trying to conjure up here that you Rob aren't 'black enough' (by your own metric) either.

There is SO much racism just permeating out of these comments if you take a moment to stop laughing at the stupidity and dissect what he's saying. He said "He's not really ... he's black, but he's not really down with the cause. He's not one of us.". Not one of us....do you know what that hints at? There is a word that people use when insulting African Americans that is one of the truly ignorant words in our vernacular. There are two words that African Americans use towards each other that are held in even more contempt than the former. He's calling RGIII the latter. And why does he feel this way about RGIII? Because he's well spoken? Are you saying other African Americans like you aren't? Is it because RGIII is a real gentleman and mature beyond his years? Are you saying other African Americans aren't? This 'question' is just ripe with inward facing assumptions about the African American community from a guy who wants to affiliate himself with something that was created by racism in the first place-the stereotype of the African American male.

The irony here is almost too much to get by. I am so shocked that I can't even be appalled-there is no room in my emotional locker for anything other than awe. This is a truly awesome display of stupidity.....

Excellent comment, with one minor quibble - and this is really my hang-up, not you saying anything out of the ordinary, but . . .

I will never understand how one person living in heavily urbanized NYC is supposed to be part of the same "community" as another person living in rural western Oregon because they are both of the same race/ethnicity/religion/etc. In general, the word "community" is used in all sorts of nebulous, artificial ways that make me gag. One of my least favorite examples is when people refer to an "internalitional community," as if any such thing could even remotely exist in the real world.

That's a great point. "Down with the cause" or "down for the struggle" can mean anything the sayer wants/perceives it to mean. Rarely, if ever (that I've seen) is that phrase defined - i.e., what exactly is the cause/struggle from which person-X has strayed? Economic empowerment for young African American males? Seems like RGIII is promoting that "cause" pretty strongly. And so forth . . .

It's comments like Parker's that are the  reason that racism is still perpetuated in this country today.  It sickens me to no end.  People like Parker are further perpetuating the myth that African-Americans are "different" from the white citizens of this country, referenced here by his critique that RGIII isn't "down with the cause".  The hell does that mean?  Last time I checked, he's a Texan transplant in DC--wonder if there's a bit of a culture difference between those two places.

It's amazing that almost fifty years since Dr. King's famed speech, people like Parker are still defining men by how the color of their skin should dictate the content of their character.

BrewstersMillions's picture

I won't let ESPN slide here either. They can take their stance and suspend the guy (deserved) but the whole idea of "First Take" is to have ass hats on TV saying ass hatty things in an effort to get people talking about said ass hattery. This is EXACTLY the kind of stupidity that gets the lowest common denominator of sports fans watching and in the end, that is exactly what the Booyahs want. So they can suspend to save face but make no mistake about it, somewhere they are secretly chuckling.

Its the same network who no more than 2 years ago asked the hard hitting question "What if Michael Vick were white?". Real neat concept. Take a charged issue with a galvanizing sports figure, look at him, see that he's black and say "What if he was the other color?". I'd love to have been a fly on the wall at that meeting.

That was not my intent in the slightest.  I understand how it could have been misconstrued, though.  It's the line of thinking that's backward, not the color of the man who said it.

hodge's picture
hodge on 14 Dec 2012 - 1:24pm #

That's your opinion, and you're certainly more than welcome to it.  I tend to believe that people holding a person's character to the standards of what they expect from the color of their skin is the textbook definition of stereotyping.  By broadcasting said opinions to an entire nation, we put forth the belief that one must succumb to their race's "cause", else be seen as not truly "the genuine article".  Therefore, if you do not ascribe to a predecribed stereotype, you are labeled an outsider.  What's the difference between this line of thought and thinking that he's "inferior"?  Perspective.  Both lines of thought are beyond ignorant.

We're never going to get past racism--which is still painfully apparent in this country in many a facet--until we get past the idea that the color of your skin means that you're instantly grouped into a predescribed archetype.  Parker may not have intended it, but he was labeling RGIII as a cultural outsider because he "votes Republican, has a white faince, etc."; the fact that any of these things should be quid pro quo for calling someone disengenuine by the standards of their race is downright insulting--and not just to any race, but to humanity as a whole.

Brewster explains the implications of said line of thought much more in-depth in his above comment.

I appreciate the clarification, but I think where we disagree is that I don't have any illusions that Parker was speaking for anyone but himself. It would come as major news to me if his feelings about Griffin were widely shared, or even un-widely shared.

I've lived in Washington before, and I have little doubt that Griffin has been embraced by almost everyone.

The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.

hodge's picture
hodge on 14 Dec 2012 - 1:53pm #

And to that point I do believe that you're right.  I've not heard of that line of thought anywhere else pertaining to Griffin, but I do recall it being tossed around a lot during the election.

I guess what drives me nuts is that the media's influence upon the people is undisputed, we are completely shaped by the messages we receive.  In a vicious cycle, the media--desiring maximum profit--plays to the idea of "debate" by having pundits take "extreme" positions.  This riles up interest (good or bad, no publicity's bad publicity--provided you have an advertising budget), thus reinforcing the network's strategy.  In turn, the people are shaped by these extreme opinions, thus making said programming necessary to feed their newly discovered bias.

At least in my opinion, that's why the American electorate has become so increasingly polarized over the last ten to twenty years.  Not trying to talk politics or advocate ideologies here, just trying to draw parallels.

Pam's picture
Pam on 14 Dec 2012 - 2:03pm #

Sometimes pointing out differences between blacks and whites is often subtle. I remember last year after RGIII won the Heisman how many people said how "well spoken' he was. Black QB's are referred to as "athletic". While those comments could be seen as complimentary, there is a message in them that is derogatory. Why is it so unusal for a black man to speak well? Why are black QB's singled out for their athleticism as if that is all they can offer? It probably would have not picked up by me until my BF blew his stack during a Eagles game. He said why don't they just call Vick a "big, strong buck'? I started paying closer attention after that.

BrewstersMillions's picture
BrewstersMillions on 14 Dec 2012 - 2:11pm #

Yep. That was the point I was trying to make in my first post here. And it works on both levels. Think about ANY white wide receiver that has come into the NFL in the last 5 years and I would bet dollars to Buckeye Donuts that you or anyone for that matter can guess exactly which NFL Wideout said new guy is compared to. Without fail. Instead of taking someone and comparing them to a guy with similar styles-be it possession, deep threat, tight route runner, etc-'analysts' will look at rookie A and see he has one thing in common with an existing NFL player and BOOM. You have yourselves a "Wes Welker" type. Its a small thing but it drives me absolutely bonkers. Just because a guy is short and white, he's Wes. Why can't he be like Steve Smith? Short wideouts exist in the NFL and come in all sorts of shades. Its lazy analysis that some fans just grow accustomed to but never realize just how racist it ends up being.

Well if he had been a decent football player instead of connoisseur of the booger sugar, we'd at least have two molds of white wideouts to measure with. The short, underneath sure handed Welker and the big, physical, fleet of foot Jones. I'd feel slightly better had there been more than one. Poor Wes man, every time a white guy comes into the league and ends up being a bum he gets to say "Guess he isn't like me eh? eh?". Of course, taking rookies and drawing comparisons to current players is lazy as a whole, let alone when dealing with the white wideout....but no one says those guys have to be good at their jobs.

Disregarding race completely.. RGIII was very well spoken (especially compared to Mathieu and Richardson) but I understand what you are saying and completely agree with it Pam. As I find myself doing often, I agreed with Ta-Nehisi Coates' take on this whole debacling:

First Take is an interesting animal. It baits outrage, and often over the minor decontexualized quotes. (We have no idea, for instance, what RG3 was actually asked, or how the subject even came up.) The point is to get as close to the line as you can without crossing it. Parker didn't get the memo.

But really, to be upset or outraged that some pundit on First Take said something stupid (especially when it comes to race) is silly -- because stupidity and race-baiting have essentially become the crux of the show.

Also: the discussion in the comments in the Coates post is, per usual, very good.
