As a kid my parents always made buckeyes. Others refer to them as buckeye balls or those peanut butter balls chocolate that you can eat ... I refuse to call them anything other than buckeyes.
Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for them?? I know I can search teh google and find plenty of them but I am reaching out to my 11W brethren (and sistren??) for the best recipe. Hook me up please!

I can give you mine, it works. I got it off of cooks.com. You put chocolate and peanut butter together and it's going to taste pretty much the same no matter what.
1 stick softened butter
1 3/4 cup (18 oz jar) creamy peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 lb confectionary sugar
1 pack of semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tbsp. crisco OR a quarter of a block of baking paraffin wax (this is to give the chocolate a shine to it).
Directions: Cream butter, peanut butter, vanilla together, adding the powdered sugar gradually. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on a wax paper-lined cookie sheet. Melt the chips and shortening/wax together in a double boiler (I use a pyrex bowl in a sauce pan that has water in it...just enough to surround the bottom of the bowl). Bring water to a boil, and melt the chocolate chips and wax/shortening. Reduce the heat to low. Use a toothpick to dip each peanut butter ball into the chocolate to cover the candy. Cool on the cookie sheet, chill overnight in the fridge.
This recipe makes 8 dozen, so you can adjust it accordingly.
I think I'll give it a shot...thanks!!
Awesome ... I will have to try this one as well.
I actually have a friend who is french (and swiss??) trained pastry chef and she does the most amazing deserts. Crazy good. I had her whip me up a bunch of buckeyes this year ... not so great. They were fine, they were PB and chocolate ... she got the basics in there they just were a little too soft at room temp. God bless her for coming through for me but I am going to try my hand at it.
Thanks again BUCKSFAN! UPVOTE! :D
EDIT: Here are the ones she made for me ... artistic shot at least.
This looks almost exactly like the recipe I used a few years ago. They should turn out great! I will say, though, that we ended up with over 200 of them. (I don't remember if we increased the recipe, we were including them in our gifts for people). I didn't have any problem with them being too soft.

My kid's allergic to peanuts. My first thought when hearing this was the candy buckeyes. Any suggestions as to substitutions for the peanut butter?
Is it specifically a peanut allergy or a general nut allergy? I know they make "butters" out of almost any nut imaginable these days. Almond butter, cashew butter, hazelnut butter, etc.
I'm not allergic, but I've found that cashew butter tastes the most like the real thing, but have heard that almond butter has the lowest "allergy factor" of the alternatives.
My youngest daughter was alergic to peanuts for the f1rst ~2 years of her life (along with milk) and we were able to give her almond butter. Did it quite a bit actually! Don't take my word for it but it worked for us. I actually prefer the taste.
EDIT: I don't know how it would do as a substitute for PB though.
Go for the almond butter if you're able to. There are some PB subs out there but can't swear to the tastes. Let me know if you do try any, we've got nephews with allergies.
also adding in graham crackers to the peanut butter seems to help with their holding shape a little better when forming and dipping them from my passt experiences making them....speaking of wife said she's gonna make some this weekend, so i'll probably be doing my best brady choke at golden corral impersonation at that time.

Any recipe will work for adults if it includes bourbon or rum.

I make Buckeye Brownies. Chocolate with the PB inside.
Wife made them two weeks ago, yum! Almost as good as the candies and definitely less work.
My aunt makes Buckeyes with crunchy peanut butter... AMAZING!!!
