This negotiation has been going on for several years I believe. I wonder how this will affect Homage (www.homage.com) which has a pretty sizable line of OSU licensed clothing and is home grown here in Cbus, and happens to make an amazing product.
I think I read some time back (in the Dispatch) that the Silver Star folks had them come out to talk with them. Anyone have any insight?
So I realize this most likely was a waste of 5 minutes of my life, but I just wrote an email to Gordon Gee expressing my concern over a monopoly/one-company model on Buckeye apparel.
If you'd like to waste your time too and for your convenience, his email is gordon.gee@osu.edu.
Yeah, I did the same thing. I used the link posted by Tennbuckeye and got to this page http://usas.org/2012/11/08/rein-in-gee/ I didn't use their form letter but I wrote my own there as it send the letter to Gee and all the trustee members. I doubt it amounts to much but at least I voiced my displeasure.

While I think it will be bad in terms of the variety it offers, and I am not in the know about any possible human rights issues, it is possible that the University will 1. provide a ceiling on prices meaning that they can't be sold at a greater cost, and 2. the company will be able to sell the merchandise for less because of the possibility of increased machinery as oppossed to 131 people having to pay for production. I am not trying to start an argument I am simply stating I would like to see the proposal and any other information pertinent to the case before I pick a side.
XTREME, I don't know for a fact if these things are licensed by OSU, but they don't seem to say Ohio State or have the O on them so I would assume not but again I don't know.
I love the current variety of apparel companies because it gives such a variety of styles. Gives a lot of great choices. Makes me wonder how this will affect our future relationship with Nike. If they can only sell jerseys, it limits how much they can make off of OSU. And I absolutely do not want Under Armour/Adidas. Look at how terrible Adidas is for Michigan.
This is bullshit. Gorden Gee is behind this, he screwed us out of a bowl game this year, and should be fired. He sucks. He is trying to privatize the parking lots also. It's bad enough all the apparel is made in China but now you gotta hoard off all the local money to pay for your bowties? He also gets commision when Wexner donates 100 million. Guy is a scumbag and should go to Shittygan.
Warning: Ohio buckeye is highly toxic when taken internally.
I suspect whoever gets this contract will have the ability to sub-license to other manufacturers if it makes sense. In a way, it's like OSU is looking to outsource the bulk of it's apparel licensing business and have another firm handle all of the contracting and enforcement. Of course they are also looking to get an upfront payment (a discounted net present value calculation based on estimated future cash flows minus expenses).
I'm thinking a firm like Homage will be able to still produce their products, but would pay licensing fees to Silver Star (or whoever the winning bidder is) instead of paying OSU directly as they do now.
So, I don't think we as consumers will end up with only one sweatshop manufacturer of OSU apparel, per se, but there will almost certainly be fewer suppliers than out there are currently.
My personal opinion is that it really doesn't make sense to me why OSU would sell off this potential future stream of cash flow for a one time cash payment - even though it's probably going to be well over $100-million if I'm anywhere close to being in the right ballpark.
I also thought they sold the parking business (via a 50 year lease to a private entity) for too little (that was for about $500-million as I recall).
I'd like to give a shout out to Homage as well.. I love their products. Look at all of their Ohio State products here. If they are no longer able to make OSU products, including their recent 2002 anniversary shirt, I will be extremely disappointed. Monopoly spurns innovation and competition.
Done deal. 10 years, $97 million to OSU, and "Ohio based sub-licensees" will still be able to produce and sell OSU apparel. (Sounds like Homage will be safe. I wonder if the licensing fees will go up a bunch though.)
Well, at least they didn't sign with Silver Star, the company known to use sweatshop labor. I am happy to know that sublicensees will be able to produce OSU apparel. We won!?????? . . . maybe??? . . . .
Anyway, I am a fan of Colleseum Athletics which has cool looking vintage stuff. Hopefully they will be able to still produce Buckeye gear. I like Homage as much at the next person, but dang their stuff is expensive.

OSU is pretty keen on protecting its brand, but lack of competition is never a good thing.
Yeah, you read it right. Looks like the giant money making machine needs more $$$$$$$.
I give more than my fair share of money to OSU. It gets irritating that it's never enough.

Here's some info about Silver Star's link to sweatshops.

Limiting the competition is never good for the consumer. I hope OSU decides against this but it looks like it's been in the works for some time now.
As loyal fans, we tend to forget that in the end, it's all about the money.
Does this mean if I see a really great looking tee I need to pick it up right away? This sounds like an awful idea...less creativity and variety
Wow what a terrible move by the university. I guess this is the new American model.
Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!

Will this affect the stuff on this site?
O H I O is the Buckeye State

@chicagobuckeye Thanks..... You may be right I didn't look at all items to notice that.

This is bad. And they should feel bad.

Sadly, if Gee wants it done, it'll get done. He prides himself in his ability to push less than popular legislation through
Man, wish I were inventive/subversive enough to leverage my way into being the OFFICAL OHIO STATE ATHLETICS APPAREL middle man.
Taquitos.
If it disallows Homage from making Ohio State products, then it is flat out bullshit legislature. What happened to capitalism?
Don't give up... Don't ever give up.
