I took 11 AP courses in high school. I'd say they prepare you pretty decently, if you had strict teachers. Calculus is turrible though.

As far as engineering goes, I definitely want to ateast try it, and see if I can actually make it through. I've had almost 1.5 years of college level calc and physics by now in high school, and I'm hoping that will help.

Congrats. As an electrical engineer, my fellow EEs along with my chemical engineers and mechanical engineers colleagues make fun of industrial enginners calling them imaginary engineers. But I kid... industrial engineering is way more respectable than civil engineering.;) it doesn't take four years to learn water flows down hill or how to count cars passing an intersection.

I also interview about two dozen engineering student ever year looking for co-ops. My favorite question to ask them is why they picked engineering and particularly the discipline they picked. Ask yourself why you're picking industrial engineering and make sure your answer is better than "because I like math and science". And if you're interviewing for an internship/co-op and you're asked this question, come up with a better answer than liking math and science.

William's picture
William on 20 Nov 2012 - 12:24am #

Oh that will definitely help. Just be prepared is all I have to say, if you can handle the load of course work, you'll be fine.

Thanks guys! I'm planning on majoring in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Economics/Business.

Anyone else out there thats been accepted with similar major?

I've already been through Ohio State Engineering program and stuck with BME (Biomedical Engineering) and it was pretty difficult but is getting a lot better now that they are on their third year as an undergrad program. ISE with your minor is a typical combination and companies like to hire OSU grads.  If I'm not mistaken ISE @ OSU is in the top 20 and there is a lot you can do with it (optimization, ergonomics, biomechanics...). One of my 9 roommates did ISE and its probably the easiest engineering program to finish since most of it deals with engineering economics. It often gets looked down as "fake/imaginary engineering" so get ready to take lots of jokes from other people in the engineering program. Sidenote: CHBE is the hardest to do. I was a BME ambassador for our department and answered several questions similar to the ones you are asking. Feel free to email me (mngosha@gmail.com) and I'll answer any of your questions.

any advice for me as a future engineering student?

  • Go to class don't skip.
  • Take organized notes....
  • Make a new friend in every class you take. You never know when you are going to need help with something or someone notes. Engineering is all about learning from others.
  • Don't cram
  • Set goals
  • Do more than the typical student. Don't just do the even problems, do the odd ones for practice.
  • GET AWAY from the books. Engineering is brutal and I remember doing matlab for a BME class I was taking. I often wanted to punch the computers, break the keyboards and torch my papers due to coding for several hours.  It helped to step away and do something fun. I wall climbed every friday at the ARC on West Campus.
  • Most importantly, take care of your body. I minored in exercise science and my teacher called me out in class and said, "You can't engineer and build stuff, if you don't exercise and eat right..."

Congrats. I was originally Biomedical Engineering/Pre-Med, but decided I wanted to have a life, as well as enjoy school...

William, if you bash my major again, I will be force to downvote your next post, lol! I did BME, and I had a fairly good social life. My biggest social group was the people in my major and we often went to basketball, football games and happy hour together at Little bar and the Outer Inn. In addition, we were all able to be in extracurriculars (sports, intramurals, research, etc.) while doing well in school. You can enjoy life, enjoy school and etc. I know you didn't mean to single my major out but don't think we don't think we don't have a life.

Advice for engineering student: TURN BACK NOW.  I started as one, then quit after calc  brutalized me.

All come on its not that bad. Don't turn back; calculus isn't that bad and the school has done a lot to provide resources to students. I've been fortunate to tutor this subject so don't turn back back now, its not to hard and I've seen students who struggled with it do well.

My advice for FalconLAX13: go as easy on yourself academically as you're able to your freshman year. I was a pretty good student (albeit in a field nowhere near as intense as engineering), but suffice it to say I did not manage the, uh, "distractions" of campus life very well as a freshman, especially that first spring quarter (my reference to OSU having "quarters" now marking me forever as an old guy).

Congratulations to you. Although we have never met, I consider you a brother, a Flounder to my Bluto.

If you're honors, definitely do the FEH program.  I hated calc, but loved that program.  Also, if honors, live in Lincoln Tower, not on north with all the nerds. lol.  I found that having non-engineers as suitemates actually made my life much better. (Though my actual roommate was a CSE major.)

Thompson library is your friend, especially the rediculously overcrowded coffee shop.  Make good friends with a Redeye or Blackeye (one or two shots of espresso in coffee), it's an excellent study partner.  These drinks are also the key to making Starbucks's coffee drinkable (that is, if you prefer black coffee; if you're more into lattes and cappuccino, you'll be fine with their offerings).

Also, remember the Caffeine Curve, try to space out your coffee/energy drink consumption so that your curves are constantly overlapping, because you don't want a Triple Shotgun Murder, now do you?

Congrats!  My daughter is waiting on her acceptance.  Probably would have happened by now but she had a review committee for her essay. Before you get any ideas, the answer is no.  No daughter of mine will be associated with a Squeeler fan. ;-)

My wife is an IE (from Purdue, yes we have a mixed marriage) and she recommends you minor in management.  The only IE work she did was as an intern.  She became a Program Manager right out of school and it has worked out well.  I no longer tease her about being the only practicing engineer in the family.

You've received a lot of good advice.  One thing I always tell kids these days is keep your eye on the ball, have some fun and get a Masters while you're at it.  It will pay big dividends down the road.

Congrats!

I went through the undergrad program at OSU in Aerospace Engineering, I'm currently working on my Masters, and I'm considering a PhD (also in Aero). BME_BUCKEYE made some great points in the really long post. In my experience, engineering does become a sort of second family, particularly within your major. Make sure to get to know people right off the bat your first year. Several of the people I hung out with freshman year in the general engineering classes turned out to be great friends, and subsequently, professional contacts at several companies.

As from being from out of state, that's not really a big issue. A lot of engineering students are from out of state, and many are international students. My roommate, who's also a Masters level Aero, is actually from Pittsburgh.

Engineering is tough, but it's not as horrible as we all like to make it seem. If it is for you, you'll really enjoy what you're doing, even if the struggle of understanding very complicated subjects is frustrating.

One big thing: don't be shy about talking to your professors. Most students are reluctant to go to professors for help, but this can save you a lot of frustration. The vast majority of professors are very helpful, and I'm sure they enjoy the break from grading and other paperwork.
