If stuck on a desert island and could only choose 3 bands to load onto my iPod, it would be Phish, Rush, and The Grateful Dead. It's not even a competition.
I'm just playin' man. From reading many of your posts on other threads, I know you're a knowledgeable music dude. And you say a lot of good stuff, except for your dislike for the Beatles:)
Aw man, this is an impossible task. I'll try to be brief:
The White Stripes, DJ Krush, Wax Tailor, The Black Keys (especially their earlier albums), Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Miles Davis, The Clash, and Warren Zevon's first two albums.
Also, had the pleasure of catching Jack White live a couple weeks back, most amazing live show I've ever seen.
My newest absolute favorite that I hope revives the genre is a newer group with 3 albums total out, 70s rock and roll, Black Country Communion. Their 3rd album comes out at end of month. Plus all of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, Joe Bonamassa, Ozzie, Ronnie James Dio all bands, plus too many more to mention. Drummer all my younger years. Music big part of life.
I'm going to assume that if you like The Classic Crime that you probably like bands like Flyleaf, Swithfoot maybe some Decyfer Down... If you like Christian alternative/rock music check out the links below.
Not a big metal fan anymore. I hung that up when I got out of high school, I'm just a lot more mellow these days. I could give the safe answer of the classic rock bands where everyone agrees that they are great, but I'll go out on a limb here and name some of the more recent bands that I am digging.
Imagine Dragons - really like their new album.
Of Men and Monsters - ditto.
The Shins - been around a while but all their albums are good.
Cake - not really a great band per se, I have always liked them.
Panic at the Disco - big fan of all three of their albums though they keep changing their sound, and their lineup.
The Killers - another band that has shifted their styles between albums, but I generally like them all. Their newest album hasn't won me over yet.
The Decemberists - I dig the intelligent prog rock.

Taproot (even though they're from Ann Arbor), Pumpkins, the Used, Rise Against, Amplifier, Disturbed, Rage...the list goes on. I'm really liking Linkin Park's new album right now.
You can kill a fly with your slipper or a cannon. Either way, the fly dies. -Ramzy
@Buckeyeneer Imagine Dragons are pretty damn good. If we're discussing newer bands I'd have to go with Portugal. the Man, Imagine Dragons, The Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, The Shins, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Broken Bells, Arcade Fire, Beirut, and Fun.
dude.... Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The greatest. The greatest.
EDIT: wasn't gonna do it, but changed my mind. Shameless self-promotion. Two rising juniors, myself and my freshman roommate, have been running a music blog. Would mean alot if you checked it out. Go bucks
@O-H kee- like your flavors! Definitely Phish and Grateful Dead. I listen to the dead channel on pandora all day every day at the office. Saw Trey last night at the LC. Rockin time made all the sweeter by the exciting victory pulled out yesterday afternoon.
@hodge- i saw that JW show at LC too. Good times. he seemed to have a good time during that show. I heard some of his dates previous to that did not go so well, inlcuding a 45 minute show where he walked off the stage and didn't come back...
I'll have to check some of those out. I am not familiar with Portugal. the Man, Broken Bells, or Edward and the Magnetic Zeros. I consider myself a musicphile and I do my best to stay on top of the music scene, but a young family and hectic work schedule limits my ability these days. . . . . growing ever out of touch :)

Also, in the realm of classical music, any time I hear a recording of ANYTHING done by The Cleveland Orchestra with George Szell it instantly becomes my favorite. Wonder how many people know that under Szell the Cleveland Orchestra was considered one of if not the finest orchestra in the world.
Impossible to narrow it down, so here are a few, no order at all...
Wilco, White Stripes, Of Monsters and Men, Plants and Animals, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jimmy Eat World, Portugal the Man, Coldplay, M83, MGMT, Matt Nathanson, Pixies, Phoenix, Passion Pit, The Shins, Say Anything (their old stuff), Vampire Weekend, Walk The Moon, Young the Giant, Anberlin, Arctic Monkeys, Black Keys, Angels and Airwaves, Arcade Fire, Death Cab for Cutie, Dashboard Confessional, Foster the People, Florence + The Machine, Imagine Dragons, Grouplove, Stars... So many.
As far as rap goes, I'm a huge fan of Childish Gambino, Mackelmore, and Kanye. Mackelmore's new album is fantastic.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
You have great taste...have you heard Two Door Cinema Club? Or Brand New (they're more metal/depressing)? But all of these are sooooo good. Also try Bag Raiders, and Tame Impala.
Macklemore is fantastic, although I enjoy his older stuff like "Kings" or "Vipassana." I'd recommend that you check out e-dubble. He puts out some really good stuff.
I know you're not talking about marching bands, but on Saturday I switched over to the Notre Dame game for a commercial break and I heard one of their announcers say that for his money, Notre Dame has the best band in the land. He probably wanted to say the best damn, but that NBC contract was talking louder. I still get chills hearing TBDBITL march into Ohio Stadium on game day.
As far as rock goes my favorites are Led Zeppelin (by far), AC/DC, and Alice in Chains (among many). Classic country, I like Johnny Cash the best.
Must under rated band IMHO ~ UFO (especially in the states) Schenker and the boys influenced Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Judas Priest. Not necessarily a heavy metal band, but great 70's rock !!! Still rockin' to this day.
Definitely agree on that one. Not sure why they werent a huge band. I was fortunate to have seen them a few times back in the late 70s, including a show at Fairgrounds coliseum in '79 with AC/DC! Strangers in the Night is one of the all-time best live albums IMHO
Yes Strangers In The Night IS the best live album. I seen them last year at McGuffy's in Dayton and there were about 200 people there. You were one lucky man to have seen them with AC/DC...WOW!! They are much more popular overseas like Iron Maiden. I do not understand mainstream radio pushing today's crap down our throats.
You and I would probably get along pretty well musicly. That is if you went and burned all your Radiohead albums and replaced them with Rush or Iron Maiden. They should have quit after "Creep" so I would have a good impression of them yet. =:)
The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, The Shins, Oasis, Bob Dylan, Everclear, U2, Green Day, Weezer, Rage Against The Machine, The Velvet Underground, Radiohead to name a few.
My favorite band is one of the most polarizing out there:
RUSH
Glad they finally got nominated to the Rock Hall. Only took 20 something Gold + albums, wildly successful tours every other year or so on average, and waiting until acts like GnR got in. Yes, I'm bitter.
Other music I can't live without:
Zep, Floyd, Cheap Trick, Neil young, Jimmy Buffett
I think most modern bands are garbage, but newer acts that I really like include The Black Keys, the White Stripes, Wilco, Modest Mouse etc.
I've recently gained a ton of respect for Rush, but I'll admit in my youth I hated them because I thought their frontman sounded like Barbara Walters. Drove me nuts.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
Always had a hard time answering this one. I guess it depends on the mood really, but if I'm lost at sea, wash up on an island, and have to choose one band to listen to the rest of my days, I have to say Metallica. And realistically, only a few albums-Justice, Lightning, Kill em All, and Master of Puppets are all I'd need. I can do with or without Black, and everything else you can have!
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
When it comes to the The Who, I always preferred Live at Leeds. Who's Next is a great album, but I like their heavier stuff, such as "Heaven and Hell" or "Young Man Blues."
Never been a really big fan of The Who, but I'll admit that their performance of "A Quick One, While He's Away" during The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is one of the best live cuts ever put to wax. They so outclassed the headlining Stones that they refused to air it on BBC (as was originally intended), and the video would take almost thirty years to be realeased in 1996.
Wes Anderson also immortalized it during the "Revenge Scene" in Rushmore.
Nice call on Lost in the Trees. I didn't get into them until late last year, but man are they good. Same realm as Arcade Fire, but more personal and far less hippy. That album instantly became one of my favorites for the year and Golden Eyelids become one of my favorite songs of the year.
Love me some Bob Dylan, the dirty projectors, edwarde sharpe and the magnetic zeros, kanye west (though not exactly a saint, he's a great musician), and mumford and sons.
Definitely interesting reading through these comments. Lots of buckeye Van Halen fans, which is pretty interesting
Metallica, Pantera, Slayer! If any of you are looking for an awesome local band check out Another Fine Mess! They are a cross of Pantera/Pro-pain/Metallica! Very cool! Check em out on Facebook and ReverbNation! Plus they are HUGE Buckeye fans! That's enough to show em some love I believe!
I'd definitely go with Pearl Jam as my all time favorite, but in the same vane as others, I'll be dishing out some newer bands instead, here are some of my current faves...
The Black Keys (Saw them with the Arctic Monkeys - best show I've ever been to. Probably prefer their older stuff a little more, but I still love the new stuff and like how they try different sounds with each record)
Silversun Pickups (Saw them last night with Atlas Genius, which is a great Australian band. SSPU is a solid alternative band that know how to put an album together...they go for a particular vibe and stick with it...all 3 albums are great)
Fleet Foxes (Folky, indie band - nice melodic sound. Some of the best lyrics these days, IMO)
Elbow (Well written music and lyrics from top to bottom of their catalog...hard to find a song that I dislike from this British band. They know when to be heavy and know when to tone it down.)
Bloc Party (another British band but definitely heavier. They got a little experimental on their 2nd and 3rd albums but they come back with some gritty, hard rocking songs, with some slower, melodic tunes intertwined on the new album.)
The Avett Brothers (people like to label them country, but they're not...they're in the same vane as Mumford and Sons, but better IMO. They have a great way of being able to vary their sound while primarily using the same instruments - which is something that I feel M&S fails to do.)
Punch Brothers (Progressive blue-grass band. Sounds odd, but these guys know how to mix things up inside of a genre that typically is very limiting.)
Tame Impala (A really impressive debut. The lead singer sounds like John Lennon, which makes it a little weird at first, but their psychedelic blues rock fits well with the voice. It's a very good listen.)
The Raveonettes (A garage rock band from Denmark. They've been around a few years but the releases have been few and far between, which I guess is normal nowadays. Good listen - they keep it simple.)
Metric (Can sound a little overproduced at times, but for the most part they write really good alternative rock songs, plus the female lead singer is a tiny bit attractive.)
Miike Snow (An indie band from Sweden. Just good all around. They've had 2 releases and there really isn't a bad song on either album. The newest one is exceptionally good and likely one of my top albums released this year.)
So yeah, there's a ton. I'm a little obsessed with music (I've downloaded 110 albums released this year...yikes) so I have a lot to share. And with the exception of the Black Keys and Elbow, all of the bands listed above have new studio albums released this year and are worth the listens if you like the styles that I mentioned for them.
I think and have been told often times, I am one of the few people to be a teenager when Nirvana was big and still loathe them. - heart shaped box is the one i do love, I can do without the rest-
@jester - an upvote for being honest. Music, and the art world as well, has the distinct ability of being both subjective and objective at the same time. We all know what we like and we are biased towards that for varying reasons. One thing will relate to me in a different way than it will for you. At the same time, those who are truly into music really want (need) to be objective and understand that and not let biased opinions regulate a musical discussion. All we can do is share our interests and hope that someone can hear what we hear.
@ Northbrook: Ah, Pure and Easy, my favorite Who song. Originally was suppose to be on the never released album Lifehouse. First heard on a Townsend solo effort titled Who Came First in the mid 70's.
"It's just another case of there you are". ~ Doc (1918-2012)
@DENNY - You ever listen to Junior Kimbrough? Buddy Guy covers a few of his songs on Sweet Tea--which is an awesome record in its own right (though the sound is downright weird)--almost trance blues, really solid stuff. The Black Keys also cut a record of his stuff, Chulahoma, which is some of their finest work.
Wow; you have similar taste in music compared to my roommate and I. He loves all of the bands you mentioned and has seen most of them. I like them too but I'm more of the rock/metal type. Anberlin, Underoath, August Burns Red. I've never heard of Counting Crows and thought you might have ment Casting Crowns (great band)... My personal favorites of the genre are Kutless and Hillsong.
I'm not sure if you are still in Ohio but given your taste in music, I say you should check out the Alive Festival in Mineral City, Ohio. If you happen to randomly live in Pennsylvania or Washington check out Creation Festival.
You tell the SEC when they can learn to read and write, then they can figure out what we're doing. - Gordon Gee
I was at a wedding this summer and Adam Duritz was in our hotel. After the wedding I had a decent buzz on and Adam Duritz walked in to get on the elevator. Being drunk, I decided to mess with him...so I said "oh hey man, counting crows, I love you...I lost my virginity in a porta potty at one of your concerts to the song Omaha.". Which is not true obviously but I was trying to be an idiot. And he responds "pshhht that's like a 2 minute song dude." and then the elevator doors close.
I got burnt by Duritz.
@ Uncle Buck - I got to see the Punch Brothers in a free show up in Freeport, Maine, two years ago. They are indeed very good.
@ William - I really liked Counting Crows back in the day, though I can't really get into their newer stuff. Looking at Adam Duritz, it is still hard to believe the top notch list of hot women he dated.

I bet that was a great show. They seem like they're a great band to see live. I've never seen a music video from them, which I definitely respect, so every YouTube video I've seen has been live and I haven't seen one yet that disappoints.
So that's who sung that song. I've heard this song in several movies before so this does ring a bell. I'm gonna have a fun time searching all their songs on youtube. Thanks for sharing this.
Side note, I'm kinda slow and not up to date with older music. Heck, I just found out about Pantera two weeks ago.
You tell the SEC when they can learn to read and write, then they can figure out what we're doing. - Gordon Gee
@William If you don't know this song, then you don't know the band. lol I think we may have all heard it a little to much. Also thank you counting crows for introducing America to young hot Courtny Cox
Actually, you should thank Bruce Springsteen for introducing America to Courtney Cox back in the 80's, several years before the Counting Crows.
Check out the video for 'Dancing in the Dark'. Springsteen picks her out of the crowd towards the end of the video and brings her up on stage to dance with him.
That's a good question. Wasn't sure myself, so I googled it, and according to Wikipedia, which everyone knows is always correct, she was in the Springsteen video in 1984 and then appeared on Family Ties beginning in 1987.
Fun fact: Wikipedia also claims that the dance that she and Springsteen do in the video was the inspiration for Carlton's dance on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
You're right about the sitcoms. A lot of good ones were on back then. And I'm actually a pretty big 80's music fan. I grew up in that decade so it's mostly a nostalgia thing, not necessarily cause the music was all that good.
Yeah, I grew up in the 80's too, so the music does have nostalgic value to me, but even then I didn't think most of it was very good. I listened mostly to classic rock back then.
The problem is most people think of 80's music and they think of The Bangles or Madonna or some crap like that. A lot of great bands either got their start or had the defining parts of their careers in the 80's. U2, Van Halen, Rush, Beastie Boys, Iron Maiden, The Cure, AC/DC, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Tom Petty all come to mind, with bunches of others I probably forgot.
Zeppelin, The Who, Johnny Cash, De La Soul, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Van Halen, A.T.C.Q., KRS-One, Sabbath, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Dinosaur Jr, Kiss, Black Keys, Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane -- are all my favorite band.
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
Guess I'm a dork but I like Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, Skid Row, Cheap Trick, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Seether, Staind, 3 Doors Down, Matchbox 20, Nickelback, Goo Goo Dolls, Chuck Berry, Lois Armstrong, Elvis, Elton John, Clay Walker, Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Don Williams, WHOA KELLY CLARKSON
I listen mostly to rock but my folks listened to country so I had to listen to alot of that growing up. Although if it has anything in it about tractors or rednecks I hate it! I always got a kick out of the folks in Texas that told me I was city slicker yankee when they lived in the city! We had cows and horses and I really did grow up on a farm. I don't remember anyone ever getting on their tractor to pick up a date...lol And a roll in the hay isn't as fun as they make it out to be....lol
Too many to choose from, but anything rock. I tend to prefer the harder stuff, but I appreciate it all. Best bands live (in no order) Korn, GodSmack, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Staind, Rob Zombie, SlipKnot, and any band at Bogarts or Newport (my homes away from home).
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
All time bands/musicians: Beatles, Zep, Floyd, Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Dodos, Neil Young, Elliott Smith, Michael Trent/The Films, Death From Above 1979, The New Bomb Turks, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, The Hives, The Libertines, ...hell I dunno, probably plenty of others that my brain can't think of.
Current favs/most listened to: Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, FIDLAR, Michael Trent/The Films, been on a recent Danzig era Misfits kick for whatever reason.
Oyster on 23 October 2012 - 12:28pm # Blue Oyster Cult, who I have also seen under their secret name a few times at the old Newport, The Soft White Underbelly.
I grew up on BOC. Saw them in '78 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum, '79 at Vets, a bunch of other shows, including one of those SWU shows at the Newport in the early 80s, which was the last time I saw them. I'm going to their 40th anniversary show next weekend at the Best Buy theater here in NY.
wow, tough question, some examples of who I'd have to go with would be:
early 1900s:Sergei Rachmaninoff
50s:Platters, Elvis Presley
60s: Vogues (i.e. "Turn Around" - play this track on a jukebox at a bar in a place like The Villages in Florida, say during the 2 pm happy hour & you'll probably get laid...maybe even by a semi-grand cougar. Wait, oh derpy.); Rolling Stones,Bob Dylan
70s:Jim Croce, Doors
80s:Dio (Rest in peace, Ronny James Dio), The Cars,Journey,Phil Collins,Steve Winwood, Whitney Houston,Peter Cetera,Billy Ocean (very underrated in the big picture of 80s music as a whole)
CLUTCH - Clutch is a tough band to describe. Hard rock, blues rock, stoner rock, hardcore punk, funk metal, and southern rock. To me though they will always be known as Pure Rock Fury. This is my desert island band. I could and do listen to this band everyday and it always feels different cause they have so many different albums. They are also one of the hardest working bands ever! Clutch is on the road all the time, if they are not on the road they are making an album. Go see them the next time they are in your town!
At The Drive In - This band was amazing! I'm not a huge fan of emo/post hardcore but I absolutely love this band! I'm also a fan of The Mars Volta.
Blind Guardian - This band really struck a cord with me. It was unlike anything I had ever heard and I mentioned to a friend that at times the singer sounded like Freddie Mercury (RIP). However, the double bass drumming and galloping duel guitars meant this was worlds away from Queen. Also major kudos for being the only band to make JRR Tolkeins The Silmarillion into a concept album entitled "Nightfall in Middle-Earth".
RUSH - Neal Peart, Geddy Lee, and Alex Lifeson. Amazing band and another desert island band.
Iron Maiden - I've been a fan of this British heavy metal band since I was a kid. They still put on an awesome show. Killers, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is an amazing streak of albums!
SLAYER - Thash metal through and through. They've been doing the same thing since the 80's and have honed their craft. Another band that I've seen several times in concert and continue to listen to all the time.
DIO - One of the best voices of all time in heavy metal. However, the plays are over inflated since I listened to a ton of Dio after he passed away. RIP DIO
Volbeat - This dutch metal band really struck a cord with me. I'm a big fan of Danzig era The Misfits and the lead singer reminds me of danzig. A sorta poor man's Elvis Presley if you will. At the time when I discovered them I couldn't stop listening.
Graveyard - This Swedish bluesy hard rock band from the home of Swedish death metal (Gothenburg, Sweden) was one I wanted to hear for a long time. The problem was their album was hard to find, even online. They released an album last year "Hinsingen Blues" on Nuclear Blast and I was blown away! This album sounds like a relic but it was made last year amazingly. It oozes 70's blues and rock. I can't wait to see these guys in concert.
Creedance Clearwater Revival (CCR) - One of the best bands of all time. Another band thanks to my parents. They used to listen to Chronicle 1 and 2 all the time on record. Absolutely, love this band.
The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Awesome folk/metal band orginally from PA now based out of San Fransisco. They play tradition metal (iron maiden) with some folk thrown in here and there.
Solitude Aeternus - Epic doom metal (think Black Sabbath) from Arlington, TX. The lead singer used to be in another doom metal band called "Candlemass". Beautiful music yet some depressing lyrics.
Pentagram - The American Black Sabbath from Arlington, VA (basically). Very good traditional doom metal.
Gojira - Awesome progressive death metal, proving that some good music comes out of France. Lyrics are not typical death metal either. Songs about Life, Ecology, and Spiritual themes.
Black Sabbath - Of course they would eventually appear. I'm big fan of Ozzy and Dio era Black Sabbath.
Pale Divine - A great doom band from Maryland I resently discovered and really love. Some amazing guitar work with this band.
Melvins - This is a band that you're either a fan of or you absolute hate. They are tough to describe. Very doomy and sludgy metal/noise rock though.
In Flames - I used to love this Swedish band until their sound changed in the last few albums. Definitely, better as a melodic death metal group imho. Their first four or five albums were very good!
Beastie Boys - I've been listening to them since License to Ill. Paul's Boutique was light years ahead of Ill. Amazing hip hop group RIP MCA.
Demons and Wizards - Side project between Hansi (Blind Guardian lead singer) and guitarist of Iced Earth Jon Schaffer. These men made two albums of some of the best power metal I've ever heard.
Kyuss - Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal) used to play guitar and these guys are/were the corner stone of desert rock/stoner rock. Awesome band and they are supposed to reform soon (even played a few shows as Kyuss Lives sans Homme).
The Protomen - American rock band that composes original rock operas based on the Mega Man video game series. It's really good stuff I was quite surprised.
Sleep - Quintessential stoner rock with Matt Pike (High on Fire singer/guitarist).
Accept - German heavy metal just released a new album without their long time singer and still kick ass!
Anthrax - One of the big four (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath, and Anthrax) thrash metal bands.
Blue Cheer - The grandfathers of metal. These guys were a very good blues rock band from the 60's and 70's San Fransisco scene. Check out their wicked cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" for a taste.
Fu Manchu - Souther Cal stoner rock. I blame my skateboarding past.
Dust - Angry hard rock from New York City. Played in the early late 60's/early 70's. Punk roots right here and band members went on to play with Blue Oyster Cult, Rick Derringer, and The Ramones.
A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, The Roots, KRS One,
Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Hank Williams III, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash,
Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, RL Burnside, BB King, etc.
Faith No More - The nu-metal movement owes a lot to Mike Patton and Crew.
Speaking of Patton I'm a fan of just about anything he has done.
Fantomas, Peeping Tom, Lovage, General Patton vs The Executioners,
Mr Bungle, Tomahawk, etc.
Corrosion of Conformity (COC) - I enjoy the thrash and southern rock albums of the band.
Down - Phil Anselmo of Pantera, guitarist Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity, second guitarist Kirk Windstein of Crowbar, bassist Todd Strange of Crowbar, and drummer Jimmy Bower of Eyehategod. Killer super group!
Protest The Hero - Progressive post hard core math metal from Toronto. Great band!
Failure - American rock band overshadowed by the Seattle sound.
Struck By Lightning - Cbus Ohio's own! Sludgy post hardcore!
Skeletonwitch - Blackened Thrash from Athens. Go Ohio!
Harvey Milk, High On Fire, Valkyrie, Tom Waits, Primus, Brocas Helm,
The Sword, Ghost, Electric Wizard, Between the Buried and Me, Cathedral,
Chrome Division, Vader, Rare Earth, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond,
Social Distortion, No Means No, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Baroness, Judas Priest
AFI, Hermano, Bad Religion, The Clash, Kvelertak, Molly Hatchet, Sepultura,
Venom, DJ Ztrip, Ween, Kylesa, Grayceon, Dropkick Murphys, Deep Purple,
Dawnbringer, Pelican, Scissorfight, Saint Vitus, Entombed, Lynyrd Skynyrd,
Bad Brains, At The Gates, Scald, The Obsessed, Wino, etc.
Woody Guthrie - American songwriter and folk musician. Guthrie’s musical legacy consists of hundreds of songs, ballads and improvised works covering topics from political themes to traditional songs to children’s songs.
I found out about Mr. Guthrie after buying Wilco's Mermaid Avenue.
I like some Wilco but Mermaid Avenue was my favorite with Billy Bragg on vocals. Great album!
Killing Joke - Post punk ahead of their time and very influential.
Jurassic 5 - Very talentedsix piece hip-hop crew from LA.
I could do this all day. I'm big fan of all sorts of music.
*I like Sigur Ros, I really do, I started listening to them in 2004. But I just cant space out for that long anymore, I used to listen to them whilest knocking out some O-chem work.
*Ludwig Van was just barely good enough to carry Wolfgangs lunchbox.
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
Thinking about who is on my iPod that when their song comes on I never skip it.... have to go with Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, Dave Matthews, Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, The Eels, and Tesla.
Those that like counting Crows (especially if you like the Beatles (or even if you don't)) This is great:
Black Country Communion - Afterglow ......Just got it today on pre-order and these guys are awesome if you are into original style rock. Anyone that has been there can listen to this and hear anything from Led Zeppelin to Deep Purple and a lot in between. These guys are all true pros, have been around the block and the very best at what they do. Their work is done old style recording as well. They play it and record it. No tricks. Third album, their last "2" that's the title, was awesome as well.
Vocals/bass - Glenn Hughes - Known as "The Voice of Rock"
Guitar/vocals - Joe Bonamassa - (best on the planet, not my view but many experts as well)
Percussion - Jason Bonham
Keyboards - Derek Shirinian (yes keyboards....original rock as stated)
Love when I find really good music and this is it for those that like this type want you to know.
My tastes really depend on the mood I'm in. On any given day you could catch me listening to anything from Dean Martin to Slayer. Really into good Blues artists right now, Tab Benoit or for a real treat look up Armstong Bearcat Band from Cleveland...outstanding artists!
Zeppelin (naturally), Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack (awesome in concert), Bullet For My Valentine, Three Days Grace, Disturbed and Foo Fighters for the rock crowd.
But you can't beat Dave Matthews Band or Dashboard Confessional if you wanna get laid by a co-ed...
@osubuckeye4life that's odd that you have the protomen on your list cus they're from murfreesboro tn where I live and they're not really that well known at all. I dont really care for em but their shows are pretty fun
I'm all over the place as well but won't go as deep as I could.
Atmosphere, living legends, Mad Season, Alice in Chains, pink Floyd, the Beatles, Type O' Negative just to name a few. Also been digging some cool blues tunes lately
Ugghh! I wish I would have seen this thread much earlier. Can't believe there aren't more jam fans out there (besides the couple of Phish references). Love Railroad Earth, Moe (saw them in Cincinnati last night), String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, Disco Biscuits, Widespread Panic, and Galactic.
Non jam bands - JJ Grey and Mofro, Mark Knopfler, John Butler Trio, Black Crowes, Ryan Adams, old Lenny Kravitz, Los Lobos, Van Morrison, etc....
Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street CD. Never was a Stones fan, but when I listened to this CD, I was blown away. These are the Stones like I had never heard before - and the quality of the recording is phenomenal. Highly, highly, highly recommended - hook up to your reference speakers and enjoy.
Nice Atmosphere reference, Alpo. They're still not as well known of a hip hop act as they should be, but when you refuse to sign to a major label and perform hip hop in an unconventional way, that's bound to happen. Still should get more credit regardless.
@TNBUCKEYE91 Good music taste by the way.Townes Van Zandt is classic folk/country.
I'll have to check into "The Devil Makes Three" band.
"The Devil Makes Three is an American band. Based in Santa Cruz, California, they play a blend of bluegrass, folk, and country, indie rock and blues - all with an all-acoustic punk-rock feel".
I like the sound of that, definitely will check these guys out soon.
Oh that's cool you're from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. They are definitely not for everyone and their live shows are definitely a highlight.
I'm a big music fan I try to listen to as much as possible from different genres. I learned about The Protomen due to being a fan of video games. They were mentioned in an article on Giant Bomb (I think) with some other bands that make songs about video games like Powerglove. They sounded interesting so I decided to check out their album.
I noticed nobody said 21 pilots. There a new band from Columbus. I really like them a lot. They're an alternative 2 person band that goes crazy on stage. They have a new album coming out on the 8th called vessel
Herbie Hancock. Jimi. Led Zepplin. Beatles. George Clinton Funkadelics. Zap and Roger Troutman. Pink Floyd. Johnny Cash. Marley and the Wailers. Bob Dylan. The Clash. Metallica. Weather Report. Return to Forever. Railroad Earth. The Floorwalkers. Sublime (and Badfish). I like it all.
Glad to see this thread re-appearing from the dead...
My clear # 1 is a group called Marillion. Still cranking out some of the greatest music ever as they enter their 50's. Crazy good stuff, technically "prog-rock" but they are hard to classify. I usually describe them as a cross between Gabriel era Genesis and Pink Floyd. Give them a listen if you can - www.marillion.com. You can thank me later.
After that it is truly a crap shoot depending on mood. I love Dio, Social Distortion, Blues Traveler, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Third Eye Blind, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Whitesnake and really almost any of the 80's Hair Metal bands.
Obviously, not too well versed with newer bands, which I blame on being an adult and haveing 4 kids. Funny how free time disapears as we age, and the ability to buy a new cd and really listen to it a couple times just doesn't exist anymore, although someone at work has turned me on to The Decemberists, and I really like them.
Reading through everyone's choices has given some new stuff to check out on Pandora and Grooveshark, so thanks 11bubsters.
ZZ top was definitely a differnt band before the 80s MTV Stuff (Tres Hombres and Fandango still get a lot of play in my ipod rotation). I could probably go first six albums (i like Deguello).
Rainbow was great; particularly the DIO, Cozy Powell lineup
UFO should have been huge.
AC/DC - I like Back in Black but otherwise only listen to the early stuff. I saw them a bunch in 78/79 (only saw them with Bon Scott)
SRV at Vets in '85 still one of the best shows ive ever seen
As of right now, I don't know who my favorite band is. I've been listening to a lot of stuff like Explosions in the Sky.... or really bad rap music. Stuff like RiFF RAFF, Lil B (TYBG), and some other stuff. Been listening to Macklemore x Ryan Lewis lately, and some other stuff.
"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."
"I love football. I think it is most wonderful game in world and I despise to lose."
Woody Hayes 1913 - 1987
Whenever I'm in my 'gangster' moods, which is most of the time.. I'm usually bangin' out to some Freddie Gibbs... aside from the recruits we get, he's the only thing I like about Indiana.
Bad Company, The Dead, 3 Doors down, Zeppelin, Sarah Borges, The Script, Grace Potter, Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughn, Skynyrd and the Allmans....Also if you haven't heard Moon Alice (check out you tube they do a great cover of whiter shade of pale) and you like the Dead, you've got to listen ,same sort of loose easy vibe. I'm also into lots of contemporary Christian music as well
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
Bayside is my favorite, especially the acoustic album. I like Against Me! as well. I used to listen to a lot of more metal stuff like deftones, but now I prefer Christian music. Last night I got to see tobymac, which was pretty cool.
If you get a chance to see either Mercy Me or Steven Curtis Chapman go see them, Obviously Great themes and great great music.
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
Ah, the thread that would not die and I'm diggin' it. Anyhoot, just want to give a shout out for Don Henley. The man has a great voice and knows how to bring a song across.
"It's just another case of there you are". ~ Doc (1918-2012)
Michigan's a damned hotbed of musical talent. Off the top of my head I can think of The White Stripes, Jack White, Madonna, Eminem, Kid Rock, and the MC5, just to name a few aside from Iggy's aforementioned Stooges.
Favorite band from when I was a kid? Rage Against The Machine
"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism."

Not sure I've seen Baroness or Mastodon on the list, but I admittedly just scanned through. Both are southern proggy metal bands that are killer. Check out Eula or The Gnashing by Baroness and Blood & Thunder or the entire Crack the Skye album by Mastodon.
I'm also a big fan of Nirvana, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age (especially the self-titled album or Rated-R), Deftones, Sublime, AC/DC, The Stones, Sabbath, Led Zep, and Bruce Springsteen (only with the E Street Band. I also am a big fan of The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle).
I've recently started listening to Clutch, As I Lay Dying, Yelawolf (southern rapper protege of Eminem) and MGK (Cleveland rapper. I live in Cleveland. That's pretty much why).
Oh yeah, and Eula is a fantastic song and one of my favorites on the album. I was having a discussion the other day with my buddy about music in general (he knows my disdain for most pop music and crappy rock) and after having him watch this video (NSFW as it is incredibly vulgar...watch at your own risk but his rants on Katie Perry and Ke$ha are fantastic) about the 10 worst songs from 2010, he said that for my sanity, I need to avoid ranting about the likes of Katie Perry, Ke$ha, etc. because it'll involve me having to listen and should focus my rants to the likes of Fun., Hinder, Seether, and those types of bands and this was my response to that...
i can get just as angry, if not angrier, about seether/hinder type rock than i do with nonsensical mainstream hip hop or pop music because nonsensical mainstream rap and hip hop are doing what they're expected to do...be a superficial act for the public and to keep people numbingly entertained. hinder and seether type rock bands are pretending to be "rock" acts but write piss poor songs to appeal to the mainstream crowd as well. it's the exact same gimmick, but it's done in a deceitful way. if you're going to be a rock act, be genuine with it. i find that more aggregious than any pop or rap act.
Anyway, that rant led me to send him YouTube videos for the Take My Bones Away and Eula and discuss Baroness with him. They can rock it out, like Take My Bones Away does but can bring it down with Eula. So good...
Any folk fans on here? I've been listening to a whole lot of Mumford and Sons, Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, and the like.
In fact, any one here going to the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover in Troy? Headliners are Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, and the Old Crow Medicine Show. A taste of what awaits, if you're into that sorta thing:
I like folk but I'm still annoyed that M&S won the Grammy for album of the year. It's nothing spectacular or even innovative. Honestly, if I didn't know any better, you could've told me that it was Sigh No More and I would've believed you. There are numerous songs that are the same songs with different lyrics. I don't think they do enough variation in their music to hold my interest. So while I don't hate the last album, I just think it was a safe listen and fits the mold of the masses for the time being but didn't warrant consideration as the best album released in 2012. And hell, it didn't even win best album in its own category, so that boggles my mind even more.
The Avett Brothers, on the other hand, do enough variation with instrumentation and the vocals (the brothers switch singers or even sing together sometimes) that they don't come off as repetitive. Plus they are some great songwriters and storytellers. I'm going down to Columbus to see them at the LC on May 25. I'm really looking forward to that show.
Completely agree, Unky Buck. Mumford and Sons are fun, but to say that their music is repetitive is an understatement. The Avetts are fantastic live--I saw them a couple years back at the LC, and even though it was one of the few shows I've been to that I wasn't in the pit, the energy they harnessed was riveting (right up there with Flogging Molly's stage presence). Have you heard their new record? I really was disappointed in all the midtempo work on I and Love and You, it felt like they were playing it safe for a major label debut.
Also, another fun artist in a similar vein of the Avetts is Frank Turner. He's a former frontman for an English Hardcore band (Million Dead), and wound up going acoustic and solo. He's a little less bluegrass, and a bit more English Folk. His politics aren't for everyone, and tend to really shine through in his earlier stuff, but his music is irresistible (he does the most kickass cover of ABBA's "Dancing Queen" that you'll ever hear). I saw him open for Flogging Molly at the LC, and he was sicker than a dog (wound up canceling his next show) with the flu, but still managed to bring the bloody house down. Here's one of his tunes:
I just got the new Frank Turner album last week. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet (I like doing reviews on the side and I'm about 10 albums behind right now as I listen to them at my office and my earphones just kicked the bucket). I love the first single though and have heard quite a few things from him prior to this so I'm interested to see what he does on this album.
I really liked the new album from The Avett Brothers. I believe it wound up in my top 20 albums of the year (or at least the top 25). It had a little more country twang to it than I'd personally like, but it didn't bother me. There are parts where the album does lag and I think the overall song placement has to do with that. For the most part, though, I think their song writing has improved. If they can involved a few more uptempo songs like Kick Drum Heart from "I and Love and You" and take out one of the numerous midtempo songs, then that album would've been top notch. The true uptempo songs on the new album were I Never Knew You, Geraldine, and Paul Newman vs. The Demons so there has been some progress there. I think if they added 1 more to the fold would've been nice. But like I said, I really like the new album and I'm just being nitpicky with that.
I caught the Punch Brothers in a free concert when I was in Maine a couple of years ago. They ended up headlining at the Palace in Cbus last year. I had no idea that had done so well for themselves. But if you are into folk, check them out. They are good.
It's funny that you mention the Punch Brothers. I'm listening to my list of what I felt were the 100 best songs on 2013 and I'm currently listening to This Girl from the Punch Brothers. Those guys are incredible. Chris Thile may just be one of the best musicians on the planet. He also won the MacArthur Genius Grant in 2012. Not too shabby.
I also mentioned these guys up in one of my many posts above too. I couldn't get enough of Who's Feeling Young Now?
And bluegrass....folk...close enough. If we're going to get technical, you can label them progressive bluegrass. But it's no biggy. If you like it, who cares what genre it is.
Mumford & Sons are bombastic, worth catching live but far from genre defining. I'll throw some folkish recommendations your way in case you're interested:
The Last Bison
Árstíðir
The Middle East (now sadly defunct)
Bright Eyes (the earlier stuff, before Connor became a pop star)
Seryn
Barr Brothers
O'Death
Jeffrey Lewis (a bit of a stretch to call him "folk" but he's hard to pin down aside from brilliant. hit up youtube & look for "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror" and "The History of Communist China" to start)
I'm a folk fan as well. Going to see the Avetts at the LC later this month. Agreed with Edward Sharpe and also with Mumford and Sons. Check out Blind Pilot, especially their album Three Rounds and a Sound. I love that one. The Head and the Heart are pretty good too. They are a little more mellow.
Love the Avett Brothers. I've seen them there a few times already. Very very good live show.
I love their music because there's so much of a large wide range of people that enjoy it. When I was at their show, I saw 50 and 60 year old people as well as 10 year old kids singing thier stuff.
Me too Unky. I am definitely anticipating a really good show. I usually check out setlist.fm to see what bands are playing typically for their sets and the one cool thing about the Avett's is that they hardly ever play the same set. They sprinkle in some familiars but they change it up so much. Mark of a great band in my opinion.
I absolutely love Edward Sharp and the Zeroes. Their new album is so much fun.
Huge huge huge fan of the Avett Brothers too... Actually, I'm getting married in two weeks and me and my fiance's song is going to be The Greatest Sum. We've seen them quite a few times.
Love Mumford and Sons too. I saw them at Bonnaroo a few years back.. right as they were starting to get big.
That video is from a documentary that plays on Showtime I believe... If you haven't seen it, totally try to watch. It's awesome.
You should try The Snake, The Cross, The Crown. They haven't put much out lately but they are pretty good.
Also listen to Good Old War. They have great 3 part harmony.
Also, Fleet Foxes is one of my favorite bands. They are a little more mellow, but still have that folky feel.
Thanks for the suggestions, gents! I've definitely heard of some of those guys, but certainly not all. Since we're talking folk, any of you guys dig on Blitzen Trapper? They're not necessarily folk, though they certainly have their moments. I kinda describe them as Bob Dylan, Pavement, and Lynyrd Skynyrd's crack-addicted love child.
If you're talking metal band, I like Rammstein. I also like to listen to Wide Mouth Mason which is a blues rock band.
Not much of a metal fan. Pavement forever.
Loved Pavement
TBDBITL
HA! Great (and right) answer
If stuck on a desert island and could only choose 3 bands to load onto my iPod, it would be Phish, Rush, and The Grateful Dead. It's not even a competition.
In terms of metal, though, I love Iron Maiden.
1) Led Zeppelin
2) The Who
3) Cream
4) Pink Floyd
5) Third Eye Blind Edit: This should be Portugal. the Man
One of these things is not like the other.
I have seen 3eb an unhealthy amount of times in concert... Up vote for you, sir
Tom Crean listens to Nickelback...
This was a great list until Third Eye Blind.... But then you put Portugal. the Man in so I will forgive.
Love me some Portugal.the Man.
pearl jam, metallica, pink floyd
Black keys, muse, need to breathe
How Firm Thy Friendship....
Led Zeppelin
Good player's make the play's they're suppose to, great player's make the play's they're NOT !!!
More Cow Bell!!!
TBDBITL
William- You had me till Third Eye Blind.
I'm just playin' man. From reading many of your posts on other threads, I know you're a knowledgeable music dude. And you say a lot of good stuff, except for your dislike for the Beatles:)
-Tenacious D (and we could use some)
-Train Wreck ( folk-metal at it's finest!)
D. Anthony
Nirvana
My newest absolute favorite that I hope revives the genre is a newer group with 3 albums total out, 70s rock and roll, Black Country Communion. Their 3rd album comes out at end of month. Plus all of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, Joe Bonamassa, Ozzie, Ronnie James Dio all bands, plus too many more to mention. Drummer all my younger years. Music big part of life.
Slipknot, August Burns Red, All that Remains, Sevendust, Pantera, Mudvayne.... If its Metal, I'm a fan of it!
You tell the SEC when they can learn to read and write, then they can figure out what we're doing. - Gordon Gee
I think you pretty much listed Oz Fest 2005...yes I was there!
Lamb of God, Pantera, Slayer for metal
Classic rock I'd go with Led Zeppelin, Skynard
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
The Classic Crime
~Because we couldn't go for three~
I'm going to assume that if you like The Classic Crime that you probably like bands like Flyleaf, Swithfoot maybe some Decyfer Down... If you like Christian alternative/rock music check out the links below.

Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang, Rolling Stones
Fan of bacon since 1981
Not a big metal fan anymore.

How Firm Thy Friendship....
William,
I'll have to check some of those out. I am not familiar with Portugal. the Man, Broken Bells, or Edward and the Magnetic Zeros. I consider myself a musicphile and I do my best to stay on top of the music scene, but a young family and hectic work schedule limits my ability these days. . . . . growing ever out of touch :)

Buckeyeneer,
Here's a taste of Portugal. the Man, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Broken Bells.
Wilco. End of story.
And Miike Snow (yes, with two I's)
Sigur Ros.
"Who cares? Go Bucks." - Aaron Untch
Thebadowl,
Macklemore is fantastic, although I enjoy his older stuff like "Kings" or "Vipassana." I'd recommend that you check out e-dubble. He puts out some really good stuff.
Led Zeppelin.
Urban Warfare
98 Degrees
I know you're not talking about marching bands, but on Saturday I switched over to the Notre Dame game for a commercial break and I heard one of their announcers say that for his money, Notre Dame has the best band in the land. He probably wanted to say the best damn, but that NBC contract was talking louder. I still get chills hearing TBDBITL march into Ohio Stadium on game day.
As far as rock goes my favorites are Led Zeppelin (by far), AC/DC, and Alice in Chains (among many). Classic country, I like Johnny Cash the best.
1) The Beatles, 2) Nirvana, 3) Red Hot Chili Peppers, 4) Led-Zeppelin, 5) Van-Halen
Can't really choose, I'm into songs more than bands in general. I guess that's why The Beatles are at #1
It's 5 o'clock somewhere, & Michigan still sucks
Anberlin( their new album Vital is killer),RHCP,Fink,Ratatat, Tokyo Police Club,Bloc Party are awesome too. So many to choose from.
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Pearl Jam
Grateful Dead
Smashing Pumpkins
Radiohead
The Cure
The Who
Arcade Fire
Black Sabbath
Black Keys
The Clash
UFO
1990's alt rock and 1960's psychedelic.
The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, The Shins, Oasis, Bob Dylan, Everclear, U2, Green Day, Weezer, Rage Against The Machine, The Velvet Underground, Radiohead to name a few.
Showing my age. Neil Young and Crazy Horse.
"It's just another case of there you are". ~ Doc (1918-2012)
@BME_BUCKEYE Yes, I do in fact enjoy all of those band, thank you for the links btw.
Add in a sprinkle of Dave Matthews and Counting Crows.
@Faux_Maestro I found Wilco via Shazam and House MD. I heard Black Moon and instantly loved it.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
I'm kinda down a similar avenue as RKYLET83: off the top of my head . . .
Velvet Underground, Bob Bylan/The Band, Neil Young, Cream, The Kinks, Allman Brothers.
Fugazi, Iggy Pop/The Stooges, The Clash, Radiohead, Black Flag.
Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, James Brown.
Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams Sr.
Beastie Boys, Public Enemy.
anything with autotune.
anything that has the lyrics that rhyme love and above.
anything that the chorus is all one phrase -looking at you Katy Perry-
any band that has 5 25 year old mean singing to preteen girls.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
GlassJaw, Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Aesop Rock, Rush, and anything Frank Zappa had his hands in. But mostly GlassJaw.
-The Aristocrats!
Love me some Glassjaw. Gotta say Joy Division is my favorite, though.
The South will NOT rise again!
Joy Division, The Smiths, The Pixies, David Bowie, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver.
I could go on. Nice to see so much indie love.
@BME_BUCKEYE Other good bands of the Christian affinity - Need to Breathe, Lifehouse, Jars of Clay
~Because we couldn't go for three~
My favorite band is one of the most polarizing out there:
Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Boxer Rebellion(a litte less known than the others!)
WB
Currently listening to Band of Horses, The Avett Brothers
I like Rush, but I liked them a lot more when I was 12. (I lost interest after Moving Pictures.)
Have you listened to Caravan off Clockwork Angels?
I've recently gained a ton of respect for Rush, but I'll admit in my youth I hated them because I thought their frontman sounded like Barbara Walters. Drove me nuts.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
So many great bands, but I have to go with Stone Temple Pilots. I love Robert DeLeo's melodic bassplaying.
VAN HALEN, not Van Hagar
The Stones
The Clash
The Beastie Boys
and I'll throw ZZ Top on for good measure.
I'm a rocker, dude, through and through. Here's my favorite bands: AC/DC, Van Halen, not Van Hagar, Skynyrd, Def Lep...
Nice Joe Dirt reference
Speaking of "Rocker", check this cover of the AC/DC classic by the fantastic (and recently deceased) Nick Curran and the Lowlifes.

The Who
"There once was a note, pure and easy
Playing so free, like a breath rippling by..."
ff
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
The Who.
The Who "Who's Next" =best album ever. Not a bad song on it. CSI agrees
When it comes to the The Who, I always preferred Live at Leeds. Who's Next is a great album, but I like their heavier stuff, such as "Heaven and Hell" or "Young Man Blues."
Pam- yes. To me, not necessarily the best band (like a whole lot though), but yes, best pure studio album out there. Led Zeppelin I is a close second.
Pam, William- deja vu, or have we had this talk already?
Never been a really big fan of The Who, but I'll admit that their performance of "A Quick One, While He's Away" during The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is one of the best live cuts ever put to wax. They so outclassed the headlining Stones that they refused to air it on BBC (as was originally intended), and the video would take almost thirty years to be realeased in 1996.
Wes Anderson also immortalized it during the "Revenge Scene" in Rushmore.
@Baroclinicity I believe we have.
awwwwwwop for the win. (By the way, seeing them for the 3rd time this year on Nov 4th. And it'll be the 1st time seeing them perform in Iceland!).
My short list (not in order except #1):
Back in the day: Blink 182
Now: Mumford and Sons, Matt and Kim, Yeah Yeah Yeahs...its a long long list
Nelson
Metallica, Pantera, Slayer! If any of you are looking for an awesome local band check out Another Fine Mess! They are a cross of Pantera/Pro-pain/Metallica! Very cool! Check em out on Facebook and ReverbNation! Plus they are HUGE Buckeye fans! That's enough to show em some love I believe!
Metallica, Godsmack, Eminem, Hank Jr, Buffet
People are saying that I'm an alcoholic, and that's not true, because I only drink when I work, and I'm a workaholic.
Ron White
This is hard to do because largely it depends on mood and there is a lot of music I like, but I'll try to give my top 5 (in no particular order):
Pink Floyd
The Black Keys
All Jack White muisic (solo, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather)
Nirvana
Bob Marley
back in the day: Carpenters
today: Carpenters
I love the Carpenters. They do great work.
Metallica forever!!!!!!

OH!!!!!
Proud parent of a Senior at The Ohio State University
Elbow... Reminds me of Left for Dead haha
The Hold Steady, Drive-By Truckers, Bob Dylan and The Band, Otis Redding, Buddy Guy, The Mountain Goats
Taquitos.
I think and have been told often times, I am one of the few people to be a teenager when Nirvana was big and still loathe them. - heart shaped box is the one i do love, I can do without the rest-
~Cue Down Votes For Differing Opinions~
~Because we couldn't go for three~
@jester - an upvote for being honest.
Explosions in the Sky.
I haven't directly listened to Kimbrough yet Hodgepodge (just via Thickfreakness), but I certainly will.
Taquitos.
RBUCK, always nice to see another Who fan. I always believed Lighthouse wasn't finished because Pete lost his youth.
@Jestertcf

1) Clutch
Runner Ups
High On Fire
Queens of the Stone Age
Fu Manchu
BME, I'm sure that you've heard Counting Crows before.
Holy crap William linking to a Counting Crows Joni Mitchell cover instead of Mr. Jones makes me feel so so old oh man
Also how do people not know the Counting Crowes, has America gone post-queefcore?
Taquitos.
Denny, I've never heard of a band called 'Post - Queefcore'. They sound awesome.

THE Ohio State University
He banged Courtney Cox AND Jennifer Aniston...sounds like he passed oh Phoebe.
I would've passed on early "Friends" Phoebe too...the later years of the show, that's a different story though.
I bet that was a great show. They seem like they're a great band to see live. I've never seen a music video from them, which I definitely respect, so every YouTube video I've seen has been live and I haven't seen one yet that disappoints.
As far as I'm concerned, Jimmy Eat World's Clarity album is the best album ever.
I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.
@ William
So that's who sung that song. I've heard this song in several movies before so this does ring a bell. I'm gonna have a fun time searching all their songs on youtube. Thanks for sharing this.
Side note, I'm kinda slow and not up to date with older music. Heck, I just found out about Pantera two weeks ago.

Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Breaking Benjamin

And Otherwise is starting to grow on me.
@William If you don't know this song, then you don't know the band. lol I think we may have all heard it a little to much. Also thank you counting crows for introducing America to young hot Courtny Cox
~Because we couldn't go for three~
Actually, you should thank Bruce Springsteen for introducing America to Courtney Cox back in the 80's, several years before the Counting Crows.
Check out the video for 'Dancing in the Dark'. Springsteen picks her out of the crowd towards the end of the video and brings her up on stage to dance with him.
Was that before or after she played Alex's girlfriend on Family Ties?
(realize this is an old post, but scrolling back though it due to the recent bump)
Ah, the '80's. Great time for sitcoms, not so much for music.
I don't disagree. There was good music in the 80's, but it gets lost in the sea of crap that made up most of the popular music of the decade.
Loved SRV, got to see him play live before he passed. One of the underappreciated greats.
I'm sure he has a great personality !
Five Finger Death Punch (The Bleeding, Far from Home, Coming Down)
Breaking Benjamin
Skillet
Staind
Shinedown
and an obscure band called Flaw to name a few.
Flaw's album through the eyes is awesome. Semper Fi devil.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
In terms of newer music: Arcade Fire, The National, Radiohead, Neutral Milk Hotel
Older music: Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles
Too many to choose from, but anything rock. I tend to prefer the harder stuff, but I appreciate it all. Best bands live (in no order) Korn, GodSmack, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Staind, Rob Zombie, SlipKnot, and any band at Bogarts or Newport (my homes away from home).
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Okkervil River, Elliott Smith, The Weakerthans, Tool
Blue Oyster Cult, who I have also seen under their secret name a few times at the old Newport, The Soft White Underbelly.
(which may also give insight as to my screen name origin)
NICKELBACK!1!1!1!1!

If Denard Robinson isn't careful with spooning all that food into his mouth, he's going to end up lookin' like Whoopi Goldberg
Pink Floyd....Always my Favorite.
Also, how could I forget The Dead Schembechlers???
Oyster on 23 October 2012 - 12:28pm # Blue Oyster Cult, who I have also seen under their secret name a few times at the old Newport, The Soft White Underbelly.
I grew up on BOC. Saw them in '78 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum, '79 at Vets, a bunch of other shows, including one of those SWU shows at the Newport in the early 80s, which was the last time I saw them. I'm going to their 40th anniversary show next weekend at the Best Buy theater here in NY.
@USMC Flaw - Only the Strong Survive. (slow version) awesome awesome. Forgot all about that song, now I must scour my I tunes to find it.
also- love the rest of the bands as well.

Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains
Nirvana
wow, tough question, some examples of who I'd have to go with would be:
early 1900s: Sergei Rachmaninoff
50s: Platters, Elvis Presley
60s: Vogues (i.e. "Turn Around" - play this track on a jukebox at a bar in a place like The Villages in Florida, say during the 2 pm happy hour & you'll probably get laid...maybe even by a semi-grand cougar. Wait, oh derpy.); Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan
70s: Jim Croce, Doors
80s: Dio (Rest in peace, Ronny James Dio), The Cars, Journey, Phil Collins, Steve Winwood, Whitney Houston, Peter Cetera, Billy Ocean (very underrated in the big picture of 80s music as a whole)
90s: STP, Foo Fighters, Bush, Alice In Chains, Third Eye Blind, Silverchair, Pearl Jam, Jewel, Sublime, Snoop Dogg, Ben Folds
00s: The Killers, Black Keys, Three Days Grace, Chromeo, The Fray, Arcade Fire, Phantom Planet, Kings of Leon
I know, I know - I'm literally all over the place.
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
Led Zeppelin is obviously the greatest rock n roll band ever.
Love listening to Jerry Garcia play quitar.
Love listening to Bo Marley Sing
Rolling Stones are good as well
Right on Bolt!

I'm all over the map:
Some favs from my last.fm profile:
Go Ohio!
Fates Warning, Amon Amarth ,Nevermore, Choking Victim
Jurassic 5 - Very talented six piece hip-hop crew from LA.
I could do this all day. I'm big fan of all sorts of music.
Well, it took a post of 100+ bands to even bring them up, but you got at least one right:

*I like Sigur Ros, I really do, I started listening to them in 2004. But I just cant space out for that long anymore, I used to listen to them whilest knocking out some O-chem work.
*Ludwig Van was just barely good enough to carry Wolfgangs lunchbox.
"I'm One Bad Buckeye, and I approve this message."
One Bad- with you on the Talking Heads. They never get enough love, although David Byrne is a little too egotistical for my tastes.

I'm a big fan of Kenny G!
Best backup
singerquarterback in the country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1"Political correctness is tyranny with manners." Charlton Heston(1924-2008)

My tastes really depend on the mood I'm in. On any given day you could catch me listening to anything from Dean Martin to Slayer. Really into good Blues artists right now, Tab Benoit or for a real treat look up Armstong Bearcat Band from Cleveland...outstanding artists!
Gov't Mule
Brian
Go Bucks!
Yeah buddy. Mule is top 3 for me.
But Widespread Panic is my all time favorite hands down.
My music taste is all over.
favorite singer/songwriter is the Townes Van Zandt ( please someone know who he is )
The devil makes three - probably the best band you've never heard
I saw some love for hank jr and I gotta say he's the worst of the hanks -for hank III and senior are pretty dope
Mars volta, love me some of the dead, I have a pretty sick dead tattoo on my arm if I say so myself, modest mouse is probs my all time fav band though
Electronic id go with mimosa, pretty lights, and purity ring
Hip hop - outKAst, odd future, atmosphere, gambino is pretty sick sometimes
All the regular cliche ass classic rock is good still

Also been digging some cool blues tunes lately
good thread here!
Now if we are talking favorite song, well then here. Seek Up, Dave Matthews Band. This is my favorite version.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
WIDESPREAD PANIC
I guess I'm the only Dream Theater fan on the board.
Not a fan of Dream Theater but Mike Portnoy is a drumming god!
Janes Addiction, Public Enemy, Sabbath, RATM, Korn, O A R.
I really like Imagine Dragons for something more current
Champions Bleed Scarlet & Gray
I noticed nobody said 21 pilots. There a new band from Columbus. I really like them a lot. They're an alternative 2 person band that goes crazy on stage. They have a new album coming out on the 8th called vessel
Herbie Hancock. Jimi. Led Zepplin. Beatles. George Clinton Funkadelics. Zap and Roger Troutman. Pink Floyd. Johnny Cash. Marley and the Wailers. Bob Dylan. The Clash. Metallica. Weather Report. Return to Forever. Railroad Earth. The Floorwalkers. Sublime (and Badfish). I like it all.
Wayne Woodrow Hayes

Black Label Society
"Because I couldn't go for 3"
Glad to see this thread re-appearing from the dead...

I agree JLBNYC,
I should have included Deguello. First ZZ show was this tour at Hara Arena in Dayton. I was hooked.
Rock on !!
Favorite of all time: The Outlawz (can't beat Pac)
Current favorite: Black Hippy

As of right now, I don't know who my favorite band is. I've been listening to a lot of stuff like Explosions in the Sky.... or really bad rap music. Stuff like RiFF RAFF, Lil B (TYBG), and some other stuff. Been listening to Macklemore x Ryan Lewis lately, and some other stuff.
Really out of the music scene.
Help is on the way.

True story; Iggy decided what he wanted to do in life one night, when he saw The Doors play at Michigan's Old Intramural Building.
Michigan's a damned hotbed of musical talent. Off the top of my head I can think of The White Stripes, Jack White, Madonna, Eminem, Kid Rock, and the MC5, just to name a few aside from Iggy's aforementioned Stooges.
Don't forget Motown. I love some Motown.
...Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Mitch Ryder, Alice Cooper, Don Was...
Stone Sour is pretty nice right now....
Favorite band from when I was a kid? Rage Against The Machine

Good call on Baroness. Yellow & Green was one of my favorite albums of 2012. Sludge metal sounds like such a weird genre, but man these guys are good.
Anyway, that rant led me to send him YouTube videos for the Take My Bones Away and Eula and discuss Baroness with him. They can rock it out, like Take My Bones Away does but can bring it down with Eula. So good...

That is a blast from the past!
They are good.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_Brothers
Ok Wiki calls them progressive bluegrass, but it sounds folksy to my untrained ear.
EDIT: Deja vu. See what happens when we bring threads back to life. I brought up the same damn band again. Sigh . . . .
"Because the rules won't let you go for three." - Woody Hayes
THE Ohio State University
Some day the Mumford Bro will learn a new strumming pattern and the world will implode.
Taquitos.
hahahaha
so true
all their songs sound the same
I'm just happy to be here
Mumford & Sons are bombastic, worth catching live but far from genre defining.
I loved Bright Eyes early stuff...
The Middle East is super good too.
Never heard of the others but I might have to look them up.
I'll be down there at the LC for that show as well, CincyBuck. I'm really looking forward to it.
I'm a big fan of The Tallest Man On Earth, which is folk-y in more of a Dylan way than a mandolin + banjo way. But still folk-y, and good.
Taquitos.
