I dont get it, I come here often for civilized debates. I thought downvotes are suppose to be for jerks, personal attacks, etc. Brewsters and I differ quite a bit but dont downvote one another for a diff opinion. whats everyone elses thoughts?

I downvote for excessive negativity, insults, and occasionally when people come in and troll with information that doesn't contribute and is gratuitous. Isn't different opinion what these arenas are for?
Some people just can't have nice things.
I use a complex mathematical system to come up with who I downvote. It works out to be about the same as Buck-I.8's criteria; excessive negativity, personal attacks, trolling, ridin' dirty, etc.
Not enough people are upvoting, or voting at all. Right now only a couple of downvotes seems harsh, but it wouldn't be if there were more upvotes to cancel them. Vote more often. It's here to help and it will. If you see a downvote you don't agree with, upvote to counter it. I thought about creating a forum topic or blog post about this very thing too. I just think more people need to vote more often. I see some people comment more now, which is good. But I see guys comment and say, "I agree" or "Well said, I like this" but no upvotes for the comments they are replying to. Which is selfish because then they are getting a point but not giving one to the person who beat them to it and posted first. Maybe it's because only a few people have enough stickers to vote, but the ones that have stickers need to upvote so we can get more voters.
TL;DR - VOTE!
“Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.” - Woody
Seems like there's been a rash of rampant "I dislike your opinion" downvoting. Seems like some people are having trouble drawing that line. For me, at least, I'm pretty liberal about upvoting posts; but it takes something pretty clear cut to warrant a downvote. Granted, not everyone needs to follow those rules, but it seems like there's a lot of comments getting downvoted that are drawing the ire of a lot of the site's established commentariat.
I actually disagree. I think votes should be used only when comments are deserving on either side, but to each his own.
I suppose to me, a good comment isn't simply such due to an absence of bad things.
I don't downvote everyone should have freedom of speech, say what you want it don't matter anywho. When one mans rights are infringed upon, the rights of all are deminished.Like I always say, when was the last time anyone from TOSU called and ask for your opinion?Money yeah, but opinion nah.GO BUCKS!
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
@BOF Rebuttal: You can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater. First amendment rights are tacitly forgone in the name of everyone's welfare, it's the social contract.
Thus, I downvote when other poster's ruin other people's good times with their being jerks.
Yesterday, BuckeyeJason got hammered with down votes simply because he's viewed as negative. While, I disagree with him a lot, I enjoy coming on here and having people to banter with. I also agree with people a lot too! I really didn't feel like anything Jason said was something to downvote him on. From the get go, it seemed the point was to discourage people like M1EK from coming on the site and being a tool and insulting everyone. It seems like far too often people get downvoted just because they have a strong opinion and others don't like it.
Sometimes buckeyejason tends to take it too far, but since he's posted here for a long time, I give him the benefit if the doubt and am able to recognize his various tones.
It's mainly when new posters come on here and start trolling (re:Brutus the Champ) where I'll be quicker with the trigger. You have to earn your right to be negative
Buck I 8 - You can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater, but can you yell 'Theater!" in a crowded fire station?
I haven't seen anyone get downvoted more than 5 very often. I feel like there needs to be more upvotes so when people see -3 they don't go "OMG why is this getting slammed?!" because it then it should get at least 3 upvotes by people countering the idiot voters who are mis-using the downvotes.
I feel right now a lot of people comment because that is the primary way to get stickers. If you comment well and get lots of upvotes, there wouldn't be a need for so many pointless comments.
“Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.” - Woody
I just got my voting rights today. I was suprised to see how little peoples posts got votes. I thought there would be more.
I try to upvote a lot. If I like the post or if it said something I wanted to say, I upvote it. If it makes me laugh, I upvote it. Sometimes I upvote just based on the commenter, like guys I know have been around and are good commenters, I upvote them almost in honor of the legacy I feel they deserve from the pre-sticker era.
“Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.” - Woody
I think the Buckeye's should use down votes too... retract helmet stickers for bad play. Tress probably wouldn't have retracted them but I bet Urban would :). We'd probably see certain players not only missing some of their previously earned stickers, but some of their middle stripes as well.
D. Anthony
@BUCK-I.8 - See, I disagree on that point. I don't think you ever "earn the right to negativity", the commentariat just starts to better understand each members' "style", which might tend toward forgiving certain members due to their pre-established "tone". Though the more established posters' helmet sticker totals allow for recovery from prolific downvoting if the wrong thing is said, which could almost be seen as insurance against "saying the wrong thing". Perhaps that's what you were implying, but I think that voting should be held to equal standards amongst everyone.
That's what I was implying, I should've been more clear. To the untrained reader buckeyejason appears to be negative and non-productive at time. But after reading his posts for a long-ish time, I realize that his posts are not without good intention, so I'm slower to downvote.
everyone just recieved a 1 up vote from me i really like bucksfan when he said he upvotes for legacy lol never heard or thought of that one.
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I have a couple of problems when people downvote non threatening or non"jerk" problems. I think first, it discourages good discussion. People may not like giving a good argument contrary to a comment because they don't want to get downvoted. Second, we ultimately end up getting comments about the downvote which don't really add anything to the discussion either. I only downvote when it's really out of line, like the fool the other day that BuckI-8 mentioned.
On a somewhat related sidenote, this thread is an absolute upvote-fest.
ive downvoted jason when i think he is just talking to hear himself talk
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Hodge, I know no politics are allowed on 11W but if that ever changes, my vote goes to you my Buckeye friend.
im upvoting the sh*t out of this thread....
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
You're not the only one Sir...
i downvote based on the idiot rule: dont be one
Wait dont upvote for legacy! How am I ever gonna get on the top 100 board now?
@LOUGROZA - Thank you, sir. I'd love to talk politics here (it's one of my other great passions, along with sports and food), if the discussions were like the ones that we have on Buckeye football, it'd be awesome. But then again, nothing causes factionism like politics; sports seems so much more trivial (but still more fun) when compared to the issues on the voting ballot.
In my opinion, upvotes are for bringing new information and novel insight into the discussion, while downvotes are for personal attacks, name calling, and being deconstructive in any way, whether it's a targeted phrase or a "you people". I don't upvote or downvote based on my opinion and agreement. I also don't upvote people for getting downvoted to balance them - after all, the voting system relies on all of us to respect the opinions of others and if someone else thinks something should be downvoted, I won't upvote just to spite the downvote - that is abuse of the system in my opinion. I also don't vote down people that are negative, as long as they are not negative on others or the opinion's of others. I don't think every comment deserves an upvote.
i suggest you keep posting on this forum my friend. there is a upvote frenzy in here. i dont know if everyone got laid last night or what.
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I think that by and large, folks are using their voting rights responsibly. Sure, there are a number of downvotes that make me say "huh?" every day, but I think its rare for someone to get hammered for an opinion that is not purposely insulting or incendiary.
Likewise, massive amounts of upvotes seem to be reserved for comments that are truly deserving.
Bottom line: I think the system is working. Its not perfect, but then again, neither is the Buckeyes' defense (let the downvotes rain down for that comment).
Ok, new rule for me for this thread: If you comment I will upvote you. I don't care if you call my mother a woman of questionable morals, you're getting an upvote no matter what. GO!
“Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.” - Woody
Wow. Im glad I got in this discussion while the upvoting was hot.
BucksFanXC - I can't guarantee I won't ever call your mother a woman of questionable morals, but I'll try to avoid it.
This thread is a complete abuse of the system, and I love it. In fact I love you all; platonically, at least. UPVOTES ALL AROUND!
Good discussion. These really help, thank you.
When I vote, I follow these rules:
DOROTHY MANTOOTH IS A SAINT!!!!!!!
I freakin' love you guys (& gals)! You're the best!
there seems to be a lot of positive energy in this forum i like it! by far my best forum topic since ive been here! almost couldnt type too busy patting myself on the back :)

sir rick- you get an upvote just for your great avi. i never knew what schadenfreude truly felt like until i watched bret bielema lose football games.
the kids are playing their tail off, and the coaches are screwing it up! - JLS
I only downvote those obvious ones where a comment was made that shouldn't have.
With that said, if you don't go off the cliff with a comment, an occassional downvote shouldn't ruin your day! Just strive to make it up with a positive comment!
Feelin the love on this thread! Upvotes all around!
Edit: Oh yeah, its Friday too! Upvotes for that as well!
Generally I don't vote much. For me the upvote bar is set lower (more likely to use it), while the downvote is for extremely bad (not as likely to use it). Downvote is more for innappropriate, offensive, rude, discourteous, blatantly trolling (and not in a funny way, in a malicious way), and/or abusive comments (and also things Bielema would say in an internet forum). Upvote is for thoughtful, informative, and/or funny comments.

DOROTHY MANTOOTH IS A SAINT!!!!!!!
Genius! HAHA, I have a fantasy football team named Dorothy Mantooth Saints...nice post.
But back to the subject at hand. Basic agreement with the concensus here. While I currently don't have voting priviledges, knowing how voting works on TOS, I find it counterproductive to just downvote for the sake of downvoting. As a person with a BFA in Art & Tech from OSU, I'm conditioned to getting and giving criticisms. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they hate you. Sometimes it's a good way to get varying viewpoints. It gives us a chance to be less myopic. I like knowing what others think and like knowing why they think that way. I don't know, that's just me.
I don't know about the first but it certainly won't be the last! :)
Here ya go!
WOW. Jason, get on that downvoter! Show yourself you sniveling coward!
Someone had to try to spoil all the fun. oh well. more upvotes for all!!
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
I bet the downvoter is also the Creed fan.
Sir Rick - Good discussion. I basically follow Jason's lead here. Only down vote someone when they violate the commenting policy (after all, the policy is a link right above the Post New Comment box.) I do upvote if I really approve of what is being said, the comment is really informative, or there is civility exhibited when expressing a contrasting opinion, even when it contradicts my own viewpoint. I know that I have been down voted simply for stating an opinion - I don't use down votes like that. But, vulgarity will almost certainly earn anyone a down vote, if not from me from a multitude of others (I am a big advocate of the f word, it has the most meanings of any word in our vocabulary, but it ,along with many others, can quickly degenerate a healthy forum discussion into a mud slinging contest, so I don't use it). One last thing, when I see someone who has been down voted simply for expressing an opposing view without violating the commenting policy I give them an upvote. I think there are many others who do that as well.
Couple more threads like this maybe we can pool our stickers together and buy the Reds or something. Or at least the Browns. Go Colts!

The upvotes have gotten out of hound on this thread, and I love it! Vote For Pedro is awesome, love Napolean Dynomite. I pretty consistently ask folks "how much you wanna bet I can fire this pigskin over that mountain?!?!?!"
Dorothy Mantooth Saints is an AWESOME team name.
So let's recap, today in various posts we've had Matt Foley, Anchorman, and Napolean Dynamite references. It's a great day at 11W.
and a sincere up vote for nappy, that made me laugh

Ok, so I don't much every mention helmet stickers, but I suggest anyone who has posted a few comments on this thread check your totals. When this started I had around 960, because of this crazy thread and the fine folks commenting I'm just about to hit the 1000 mark.
Of course mentioning it will probably garner me several down votes now lol, but check out your totals you probably have received quite a nice bump this afternoon.
whoever downvoted everyone, didnt downvote my mean girls clip!

Toad - I bet you have many leatherbound books, and that your house smells of rich mohagany.
I try and keep from downvoting unless it is something that is really out of line (like the comment made in the Purdue roundtable). Upvoting I sorta look at like I look at Twitter in terms of thinking if I would RT because it was funny or good content. Just because I don't agree with somebody's opinion I don't downvote it. We are like snowflakes, we're not always gonna agree.
This isn't Nam, JFunk, there are rules
1000 means I post entirely too much during the work day. This is what happens when I have extremely busy periods followed by a lot of downtime. Funny thing is I rarely comment during games or on weekends, but man o man do I comment a lot from work! Probably doesn't hurt that my office is my basement!

What about accidental downvotes? At least once someone has accidentally clicked the down instead of up and mine (and said something - I forgive you whoever that was). It can easily happen if you're on a laptop (where you touch your mousepad and sometimes it clicks - if your arrow is in the wrong spot) or on a touchscreen device.
I also wonder what the strategy is by showing the total number of upvotes AND the total number of downvotes. Say this post gets 8 upvotes and 2 downvotes. Why show that I've been upvoted 8 times and downvoted 2 times as opposed to just showing a cumulative score of +6? I mean, I'm sure there's probably some downvote threshold that brings with it the banhammer, and I've heard talk of upvote milestones leading to rewards. Still, though, just curious.
Is there a way to see who is providing upvotes/downvotes? So you can see if someone is downvoting 50 consecutive posts, and know they are probably a troll and can ban them.
Class of 2010.
@showthem I think Jason has the ability to see who votes on what and how. Then can act accordingly.
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
I don't think giving us peons the ability to view who is upvoting or downvoting us is a very good idea. I fear it might lead some people on here into Inigo Montoya-esque quests for vegencance on anyone who downvoted them...

@showthem... yea, I was about to ask the same question, should voters id's be visible?
I try to upvote people. If not, I just ignore the comment. From what I understand, enough downvotes will get somebody kicked off?

“Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.” - Woody
I'm conflicted on the idea of losing voter anonymity. On the one hand, I think it is apt to spur retribution. On the other hand, it might eliminate some of the spurious downvoting if people knew that others could see their votes.
I'm not in the "vote club" yet, I was wondering if you accidently downvote something can you change your vote to an upvote or is it permanent?
No relation to OSUFORLIFE...
i dunno man, if someone gets downvoted even for a very good reason. It is VERY easy to click that persons name and go to all their recent comments and downvote them all.
~Because we couldn't go for three~
I try to upvote liberally...and agree with everyone else who is doing the same. I feel the downvote is only relevant in a few circumstances.
It would be one great big giant pissing contest for anyone to view how others vote. That would make 11W resemble a couch burning contest at WVU after a LOSS not a win.
@BuckForLife - Do not think you can change your vote, once done it's done. And JesterTCF - It seems that would be caught and the "criminal" would probably be banhammered. Jason said he found and dealt with the person that downvoted everyone in a Creed forum (a creed fan) for giving negative views on the band. So it is good to know that it could be done but in the end justice would be done.
I think it is best to have anonymous voting. For every downvote someone gives, the poster will feel like he needs to take revenge. Or for every upvote someone gets, the poster will feel like he should pay the upvoter back with an upvote. I think it will get almost political, and a few might even try "boosting" their upvotes. Just a thought.
im still upvoting this thread... just sayin mwhahaha
~Because we couldn't go for three~
I'm kinda curious to see the voting after a loss. I think the Mods will have to go into a lockdown mode.

I think any vote that comes from a Michigan fan should be automatically down-voted; merely on principle. (Sorry, Hail!)
Seriously, though. I think I have only given one or two down votes. Mostly due to bad grammar. Embarrassing.
I admit that my posts can sometimes be a bit extreme or even "mood" based..and you might even be able to say I'm a bi-polar commentator, but I never mean any harm or intent to "troll" anyone. I don't really see the point of the voting system but that's just my opinion. We're all here for the same reason, to talk about our beloved Buckeyes.

I'll try not to downvote anyone, your opinion is yours and you are entitled to it. What you do with your voting falls in the same category. I upvote things I agree with or like, whether it's the right way to vote or not.
I've loved the Buckeyes since I was a little kid, I'm 53 now. My fascination for watching them has never waned - although I missed a lot of their games during the 22 years I spent in the Army. I retired from the Army now and live out of state.
I only come here because so many of you guys have inside knowledge of the team, recruiting, scuttlebutt, etc. that I would never find out where I live. Thanks for being great fans - that's what makes the Buckeyes great!
