Want to hear what you guys think about the news of him turning down the fight with Sonnen after Hendo got injured. I think he punked out personally and he also needs a better PR rep because he has been shooting himself in the foot the last couple weeks.
Says he doesnt want to fight Machida again because he doesnt have enough PPV pull then turns down Sonnen even though that fight would have made him almost more than him fighting Hendo or Machida combined. Says Sonnen isnt worthy of the fight then agrees to fight Vitor Belfort who has been fighting in the MW div. for the last 3 years. recent win coming from Akiyama. Dont understand how all of a sudden Belfort is worthy of the fight but whatever.
Then goes on Twitter and first says that its all about the money for him not making one mention of the fans of his (whatever fans he has left) then takes almost 2 days to apologize to his fans.
This dude is a phony and a punk IMO. A champion should be ready to fight anyone at anytime. And a fight with Sonnen would have been the easiest money he would have made in the Octagon so far.
I am really hoping that somehow Vitor can knock this kids head off and take him down a couple of pegs because this kid is truly forgetting how he origionally got his shot at the title. Kid was still one, maybe two fights away from a title shot and was "gifted" a shot when Rashad got injured. If that would have never happened who knows, maybe rashad beats Shogun. Maybe Rashad and Jones never split up as friends and Rashad never leaves the Jackson camp then the two dont fight for at least another year or two down the line because "I cant fight my friend".
I dont know I kinda want to hear what some of my fellow "MMA buckeyes" have to say about all this craziness.

Personally, I think Sonnen is a punk and I didn't want to see him fight for another title.
As far as jones, I could understand some hesitation on fighting Sonnen. He's a different fighter than Hendo and I would want some time to prepare for his takedowns.
Vitor is the real deal... IMHO.
Get a room you two...an MMA room. This is game week for gods sake!

Anything Else Area. Although I am pumped for some Ohio State football it isnt the only thing going on in the world of sports. When I post something like this on the Football area of the forum feel free to redirect me but until then..............................
I think it's personal with Sonnen as Bones very recently said he wouldn't fight him by him talking his way into a title shot. Pretty much anyone else & the card stays on. Bones would walk through Sonnen, there is no aspect by which Sonnen can even threaten him. At least Vitor throws bombs & could score a flash ko, though unlikely.
The card for 151 was a joke & Dana knows it. His entire rant was completely disingenuous. He really sounds like a hypocrite now for his accusations that boxing ppv's are weak. I mean, they almost always are but so was 151.
Don't blame Machida at all, another loss to Bones & it would take a miracle to get another title shot at 205.
When I saw Dana and Jones on a Bud Light commercial a while back I found it a little odd. Now I think its great the sport is expanding to the size of Bud Light adds and I get the notion behind it-with that said, I sort of got the "Dana's Boy" feel about Jones. Then it seemed like his head got bigger and bigger with each win. He really strikes me as a huge, all be it talented, Prima Dona.
I have a problem with him denying Sonnen because it gives Chael something to talk about now that he's finally recovered from having Spider's fist surgically removed from his face. Sonnen deserves that fight as much as I do.
I don't know, Jones is reigning supreme in LHW, which has taken a bit of a step back in competition in my opinion. He's the first guy to hold the title for a while since Chuck if I'm not mistaken. If you compare the two, I never got the vibe that the Iceman would let a UFC event get canceled. Really a bad message from Jones. I never cared for the dude as a person despite his immense talent. This doesn't do much to sway me.
Just my two cents.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
To be honest, I don't know why this is such a big deal. Jon Jones had agreed to fight Hendo, and when he got hurt he was offered to fight against Sonnen. If he had accepted, he would have three days to get ready for Sonnen, and those three days are full of media stuff so his preperation would be minimal.
The more obnoxious thing about the whole situations is Dana White. I absolutely despise the man and everytime he talks I want to punch him in the face. When he went off on Jon Jones for "taking money away from undercard fighters". Dana, if you felt so bad about it you wouldn't sign a fighter to a contract that only pays him when he fights. I am not disputing that you would only sign him to be paid per fight basis, but I also don't want to hear it when you are negotiating these contracts.
The other item that you should consider is the Chael was training with Hendo for the Jones fight. He was up to speed on Bones, but Bones had nothing on Chael. That's a pretty big advantage. I still think Bones would beat him like a rented mule, but I completely understand him not wanting to take that fight.
I don't blame JBJ at all for not taking this fight on 8 days notice. As GoBucks96 said, Chael and Hendo train together and it is being speculated that Hendo has had that knee issue for a couple weeks and was trying to gut through it. Chael could have been ramping up his training just in case this situation happened. Hendo and Chael are totally different fighters at this point in their careers. Hendo wants to stand and try and knock you out where Chael wants to take the fight to the ground.
If anyone is more at fault here it is the UFC. While I'm not complaining about the increase in free cards, it has led to the cards being more watered down. If you look at the rest of the main card it wasn't very good. Heiron/Ellenberger? Hardly a PPV co-main. Expecting 1 big fight to carry the whole card came back to bite Dana and co.
Also, Machida was the one that refused the rematch with JBJ in Toronto later in September. At least Belfort has more of a claim to getting a matchup than Sonnen does. Belfort was at least former LHW champion, while Chael has only fought 1 time at LHW in the UFC like 7 years ago.
Bleezy,
Go call on the card. It was very weak.
I was surprised by Machida not taking the fight next month, but that should say something if Machida wants more than month to prepare and he has fought Bones before...
I think Bones' reach would be a big issue for Chael...
Agree with most here & disagree with original poster. Sonnen is a mothy punk who does not deserve a 3rd title shot in 2 years. Also extreme disadvantage for JBJ in the prep department. I dont think anyone wanted to see a Machida fight again, & it would have killed llyoto's star power permanently. Dana is a disengenous ahole, I dont buy into his hyperbole either. Would have loved the Hendo fight, dont think there is much for for him to go thru in this weight class. I think most are wondering about a Silva / JBJ domeday before Anderson hits 40....
It's a trip listening to all thse people calling Jones a"punk" and are nothing more than armchair warriors or part timers.Would you call him out face to face? Get in the ring for a few rounds? Yeah, thought not.Let the fighters do their thing, this is football.
l
Once again silverbullet when we take an mma topic to the football forum then you can say something. But here where it in the title says "anything else", that is for exactly what it states. Dont like it then dont visit the topic
Then answer the question. Will you call him out,or step in the ring? If can't do either, then what grounds do you have to call him"punk"? You do realize the significance of that sort of insult,in addition to not being able to step in the ring with him after questioning his manhood?
Also, regardless of the title above, this is a football site, not mma.
So why do they have a basketball forum on this football site genius? So no basketball talk either right? figured as much.
Jones is a fighter who is worried about money obviously. So why turn down the biggest payday of his career since all he cares about is money? Regardless of whether or not Vitor held the title in LHW at one time does not matter, he deserves this fight no more no less than Sonnen. The funny thing is Sonnen was the first man to step up for this fight when no other LHW would.
Guys like Liddel and Coture (great champions) would have never turned down a fight regardless of money or time to prepare for the opponent. They are true "fighters". Jones is a PUNK kid (sorry if that is too armchair warrior for you just speaking the truth). You defend your title anytime anyplace against anyone and he simply would not do that.
And the disrespect that he showed on twitter when he stated that its all about money for him and not one mention of the people who help pad his bank account (his fans, other than a few days after the fact of the tweet) shows that yes he is a punk. I would have no problem telling him that from that stand point alone if given the opportunity. If he was not able to handle the criticism then he should find another occupation.
Dont get me wrong though the kid is a freak athlete but a true "fighter" to the word he is not.
Bhardy,
What exactly has Sonnen done to deserve a shot at the LH title? Other than offer his chin up after training with Henderson for this entire time....
As far as the prep time, you are blowing smoke... If prep time didn't matter, than why do they schedule the events so far in advance? You're trying to hard to change our minds..
He has done about as much as Vitor has to deserve one. Im not saying that Sonnen deserved the shot but he was the one when Machida and Shogun wouldnt put their necks on the line. The card with Bones headlining was saved with Sonnen putting his head on the line. No doubt in my mind that with a week or a year to train for the fight Bones takes Sonnen. But the thing is its still interesting to people enough to buy the card therefore putting money in bones's pocket as far as PPV goes. Dont need to change anyones mind its not like I was saying Bones was going to get spanked by Sonnen or anything like that. The only thing that I was saying is that I thought his logic was off by turning down a huge payday in Sonnen. No smoke or anything like that. Just remember that im saying I still think he smokes Sonnen regardless if he had no prep time. But he never took the fight.
How about this though. What gives Vitor the right for a shot at the LHW title since he has fought MW for 3 years and his most recent win is a terrible akiyama? In my eyes he deserves a shot at bones about as much as Sonnen does but I dont see alot of people up in arms about Vitor getting it.
LOL, at Jones sayings Sonnen would've made money off of Jones' name. Jones would've made more money off of Sonnen hyping this fight for a week then he would've of off of Henderson. Look at the PPV buys that Jones has gotten as headliner,.
UFC 145, against Rashad Evans: 700K. UFC 140, against Lyoto Machida: 485K. UFC 135, against Rampage Jackson: 520K. UFC 128, against Shogun Rua: 490K.
Compare that to Chael P. Sonnen. the American Gangster: UFC148 , against Anderson Silva: One Million PPVS. UFC 117, against Anderson Silva: 660K.
Chael would hype this fight so much, he will probably make Jones more money than Jones has ever made before. Furthermore, with Jones not taking the fight it gives Chael some ammo. Anyways, that is just my two cents.
Help is on the way.
Vitor is a UFC two time champion (Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight). Sonnen has never fought in the lightheavy division...
We'll agree to disagree...
And, Go Bucks!
Just being a two time champion in the past does not warrant giving him a shot at the title. Like I said he deserves it about as much as Sonnen. You cant honestly sit there and tell me Sonnen doesnt deserve it then turn around and make a case for Vitor. Dont get me wrong Im a big fan of Vitors and its not even the fact that Vitor is getting the shot that bothers me. Its just Jon Jones words that I had a problem with because he puts huge holes in his logic.
And yes GO BUCKS!!! cannot wait for Saturday
bhardy i question your knowledge of mma. chael sonnen needs to go to the wwe. hes great in front of a mic and hes great at wrestling. his standup is below average. rather you like it or not jbj is the most well rounded fighter to ever step foot in the octagon. the kid is a physical freak is very well versed in freestyle and greco roman wrestling and with his length and athleticism he prolly has the best standup at 205. he doesnt just win fights he finishes fights. the kid is extremely exciting and chael p sonnen did not deserve a shot at the title. the biggest problem is there is noone to challenge jbj at lhw. in another 1.5-2 yrs jbj will be gone (to heavyweight)and the lhw division can open back up but, today noone is touching the kid. yes im one of the few jbj fans out there. vitor deseves a shot far before chael does you dont lose a title fight by second round ko and then get another fight bcuz you are good in front of the mic. the biggest reason he didnt fight him is chael is disrespectful and was worse to jbj's good friend "the spider". and i agree chael shouldnt get another huge payday off of jbj
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
I dont understand how me saying he should have accepted the fight with Chael knowing that he was going to win plus make more money fighting chael than he would Vitor,Dan, or Machida makes me not knowlegable about MMA but whatever.
Ive stated that Bones is a freak athlete. I have not discredited any of his wins or what he has done inside the Octagon at all. The only beef I have had is that he complains about money than turns down a huge payday. And if you think he will make more money fighting Vitor on the 22nd than he would fighting Chael with the fans only having 8 days notice you are nuts.
Maybe it was the "true fighter" stance I took that made you think this but if you actually read what I am saying than maybe you would have figured out the point I was making when I said that.
And as far as whether Sonnen deserved it or not is not the question IMO. He was the only one at that time who had the stones to step up and take the fight. Machida wasnt taking it(plus he turned down the 22nd as well) and neither was Shogun(who wouldnt even fight Glovier) and they werent going to give the fight to Gustaffson so sorry if I have no problem with Jones getting an easy payday off of beating Sonnen to save the card. In no part of this thread did I once state that I thought Sonnen was/could beat Jones all I did was question the kids logic. How that makes me lack MMA knowledge im not sure but hey whatever you say to know that you back Vitor who's biggest win in his last 3 fights is Rumble Johnson speaks volumes to yours I guess
sonnen lost his last 2 fights no way he deserved a title shot. if i was bones i wouldve laughed at dana when he mentioned chael. bones agreed to fight machida but machida didnt want it without alot of training. bones is hands down the top light heavyweight and has earned the right to pick and choose his fights. if dana isnt happy dont schedule a fight with an overage past his prime got demolished my last few fights in the ufc hendo. fight wouldve been a joke anyways no way hendo deserved that fight and him getting hurt was the fight gods. bones=best mma fighter today and its not close. if he wants to not fight a guy who doesnt deserve a shot thats fine with me. and for all those other fighters whining they arent getting paid bec of bones.....get a job, a real one like the rest of us and fight part time if its not paying the bills. yes i am a bones fan lol

"bones=best mma fighter today and its not close"
Ok, I was content staying out of this argument until that. Gross over statement. Jones is head and shoulders the best LHW in the game but until someone, anyone makes GSP break a sweat, that throne is his. Silva is a close second. I'm content with Jones as the third but anything beyond that is far fetched. Jones' flare for the dramatic and the violence with which he generally finishes fights is a fun thing to watch but no one is as utterly flawless in the ring as GSP, no matter how boring his fights are. No one is as versatile as Anderson either-there are sides of his game he never even has to show but by all accounts, Silva can out-anything anyone. Jones is an incredible talent and athlete but from where I am sitting-GSP and Anderson would both take his lunch money.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
@odeez. Sonnen has not lost his last two fights. Title fights yes. Fights in general no.
Bhard - I thought you wanted folks opinion - yet I count noone who agrees with your opening salvo - so you combat each one. Noone thinks Jones is a punk but you - Bhard4Chael would be more appropo.
Im defending my stance on it when questioned. I have nothing against what others think at all. And im not trying to lobby Sonnen for the title but to save the card and get a big payday which he would have gotten with Sonnen then I didnt see a problem with it at all. 10+ inches of reach and its not like Jones hasnt fought good wrestlers before. He would have made a killing off the fight and saved the rest of the card all while solidifying more fans. He didnt went on Social network and hurt himself plus hurting himself by the comments he made to reporters only to turn around and dick himself over.
Im fine with watching Vitor/Jones. Its a more dangerous fight for Jones IMO and one that he wont make as much in like he would have if he would have fought Sonnen. Sonnen sells fights. Go to any site/MMA forum wherever MMA is covered or talked about and the one name you see more than any other on there right now is Sonnen's. This is something that Jones let slip through his fingers all the while shutting Sonnen up and making a killing.
Sry brewsters your wrong when you say "silva can out anything anyone".. His wrestling is not top notch and Maia has better jitz....furthermore Matt Serra yes that Matt serra knocked gsp the f*ck out... Neither one of these guys accomplished anything close to what bones has at his age.... When its all said and done you won't have an argument about who the greatest is Jon bones jones rather ppl like him or not is the baddest dude there is..... I'll do u one better anderson silva has stated if Aldo was 185 he would quit mma.... Top p4p fighters IMO are jones aldo silva gsp and prolly Edgar cuz he fights outside of his division constantly... I do sip a little haterade on gsp though bcuz after that Serra fight he refuses to scrap everything is so safe
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
Well I think you will be right about Jones as far as the LHW div. goes. He still wants to jump up to HW and there is where we might need to hold off the big man on campus talks just until we see what he can do against the Cains and JDS's of that Div. HW is a completely different animal.
brewster- gsp has lot and gotten beat up.
jones has never been beat up, his only loss was bec he beat tht man nearly to death bec the ref wouldnt call it
this fact alone puts bones ahead of gsp to me bones is the best striker and an unreal grecco roman wrestler, he dominates both like no one else before him. bones would serve gsp his lunch with a smile, he's seen enough people do it theres tape to study. no one has found a flaw in bones yet and there is no tape on ho to beat him
