Open Letter to Hoke (From non Big Ten football fans)

Seems like everyone outside of Ohio State fans really hates Ohio State?

Just wanted to see what everyone thought of this...  (The open letter part starts a few paragraphs down on the page.)

College football isn't nearly as big as the NFL up here, but do a lot of people outside of Ohio really hate so much on tOSU?  Also I realize this is only the second forum topic I have created and they have both ben Grantland articles, I just like to see what the reaction from fellow Buckeye fans is like to these slight knocks.

Meh.  People default to rooting for the underdog.  Change the situation around with Michigan dominating the B1G for the least decade and Ohio State being largely mediocre, then you'd probably see much the opposite reaction.  I hated Florida for much of the past 6 years, opening rooting for teams that I'd normally hate (FSU) to beat them.  But now, I might do the opposite, and root for Florida to win because now they seem to have been knocked down a couple of pegs.  Not too many people outside of Auburn were hating on Alabama through the lean years under Shula, until they got Saban and won 2 NCs in the last few years.  Now I want them to fucking die.  Such is CFB.

Don't read into that as though it's the popular sentiment across the Big Ten.  Far from it.  When that Illinois beat writer cast his AP ballot with Michigan as #1, Illini fans were PISSED.  Everyone hates Michigan.  Everyone hates Ohio State, too.  And we're happy to oblige in hating back.  This isn't Twilight (cough, SEC country, cough), where you are either Team Michigan or Team Buckeye if you're a fan of one of the other schools.

OSU support on a national scale has dwindled since the Debacle in the Desert in early '07.  Due to underperforming in subsequent appearances in National Title games, we were perceived as the quintessential "Overrated Football Power".  Tresselball got real stale, real fast to the rest of the country once Tress's status as a big game coach started to go down the gutter after that humbling at the hands of UF.  We were outdated and overrated, and our sole source of superiority (Tress's unfallable integrity) was torn apart by a hungry media starved for offseason content.  Of course people hate us.  We're a huge national brand (amongst the largest, I'm not buying the NYT's half-assed statistical approach), with practically annual success.  Like USC, we owned our conference for an entire decade, and by default were always in the BCS conversation.  At least 'Bama and LSU have to share a conference, and the SEC has at least produced 4 different schools to share its six straight titles.  Ever wonder why we hate the SEC as a whole more than any single team?  Why we hated USC under Carroll?  Over exposure.  Ohio State has the same problem; except we're where USC was two years ago--in the dumps, with everyone we got so used to shitting on revelling in the fact that the tables (albeit temporarily) have turned.

Give it half a season.  Wait till the talk about "redemption" really takes hold in the national consciousness.  If it can make the country sympathetic to that sleazebag Lane Kiffin, imagine what it will to do a decent man like Mr. Meyer.

Personally, I could care less about what the haters think.  I've seen my alma mater unfairly villified by the unilateral decisions of one man.  Anyone who has that belief can shove it; and I'll have no problem shoving it back in their faces when we do what we've always done, succeed.

John Brandon, the writer of that article, is an open Florida Gators fan (he's an alum, so he comes by it honestly), so I don't think it's fair to say that he's a TSUN homer.  I think non-aligned fans got tired out by all the media attention that tOSU received in the past ten years  -- thus the TSUN preference.  Also, one of Brandon's points was that it would better for the B1G 10 if there were a legitimate rivalry between tOSU and TSUN, which is fair.

The issue is with the hate factor of Florida against Urban. Making Meyers rival seem/feel superior and pissing off the guy that left their beloved program. Chickenshit way of doing things but becoming standard practice these days.

I honestly dont care what anyone outside of our family (fans, alumni [ME.. WOOT], players, ex players, coaches, etc.) think about our program... Meyer and Co. will lead us to an even higher point than Tressel did (Thank you, Coach) and I am so proud and happy to be a Buckeye. Screw the rest of em.

So he started off the article with "hunk of the week"? That's all I need to know about taking this writer seriously.
