PHONE'S RINGING -- IT'S URBAN ON THE LINE
Is there anyway this fight can fulfill the buildup? Im still buying of course just wanted everyones thoughts
I'll put my two cents in-I think Silva kicks his teeth in. Sonnen was outgunned in the first fight but was within inches of catching Silva asleep at the wheel en route to a win. I really didn't think Silva was capable of not taking an opponent seriously, but I think that what happened here. Silva is at the top of his game, I'd be shocked if he doesn't dispatch of Sonnen with relative ease.
I do like your thoughts on UFC, what do you think Rick?
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
When is this fight?
The fight is Saturday night, I believe.
I agree with Brewster. Silva will be on top of his game for this fight. Sonnen at his best didn't beat Silva when he was off his game, so how will he this time?
This fight will live up to the hype. Both guys are tough. Silva took a nice beating for 4.5 rounds and still came away with the win while Sonnen took some good shots from Silva and was still coming at him (something that basically no other fighter had done against him). Sonnen has the blueprint for beating Silva and that is stay in his face,be unrelentless with the takedowns/attempts, when you get him down, put the hand over the mouth make it harder for him to breathe and tire him out. All he has to do really is stay away from the submission openings that he left Anderson in the first fight.
Since Sonnen is a wreslter that is what opened him up for planting Anderson on his butt with punches because Silva has to worry about the takedown. I expect to see that again. Another thing is that Sonnen is in Silvas head big time. If Silva goes out there just looking to take Sonnens head off then it works in Sonnens favor becasue Anderson will leave himself open for the take down.
This fight will be dictated by Sonnen just like it was in the first fight. Chael will be in his face going for the takedown and landing some punches on the feet that will knock anderson back. Anderson is great but nothing is making me think any different of what I saw Chael do in the first fight to think he wont be able to do it again. Yes Anderson had an "injury" but if it was as bad as they were trying to make it do you really think any doctor in their right mind would have still medically cleared Anderson to continue to take the fight? Not gonna happen.
Get ready for saturday though this fight will be another war and honestly I think if Sonnen can do exactly what he did in the first fight all the while staying away from the submission then he will dethrone Anderson.
Silva has beaten better wrestlers than Sonnen (See Henderson, Dan). I can gurantee you that Sonnen got Silva's attention but that might not be the best thing for him. I think we underestimate how good Silva is because short of his fight with Sonnen, he's been virtually unchallenged. That clearly changed.
Also, I wonder if Chael is still taking shots for Testosterone Treatment Therapy like he was prior to the first fight. I think he CAN challenge Spider. He's a very good fighter in his own right. Silva is also a suberb grappler\BJJ practioner and doesn't show as much of his black belt level Judo as you'd think. He's got too much for Sonnen. If Chael can't get him down, Silva is going to split his face open. If he does, Silva will submit him. I think it'll be a nice effort one way or the other but Silva is virtually flawless.
Agree with most of your assessment except Chael is a better wrestler than the Dan Henderson Spider fought. Jake Shields threw Hendo around about the same time.
Spider by rd 2 tko. Hope it's good because the rest of the card is meh.
The rest of the does seem kinda meh, and depending on which type of fights one likes to watch, I think there could be some good fights, well brawls maybe not the most technical. Things I'm interested in seeing... 1 Does Forrest come to fight? He use to be one of my fav fighters to watch just because it didnt seem like he woke up until he started bleeding lol and does he let tito win and then retire himself... Personally I could see them both retiring after a great fight...
2 Does Demian Maia realize his standup is below par regardless of what he does? This guy is top 3 in the entire world as far as bjj goes and even challenged silva at 185 at one point... well didnt put up a performance but he looked real solid for awhile
3 Le and Cote should be a standup war... Both of these fighters feel they are better than the other standing up... Both more of the old guard as one demensional fighters... Look for wild spinning kicks a la machida and bones from le (yes same le that has been in movies).... His standup game is actually quite strong and was a strikeforce champ
4 The fight.... I do look for 1+ million buys.... This one is so tough first as far as the rib injury (brazilians cant look bad at the hands of an american and if they do they were hurt) ALWAYS... Im not one to stereotype alot but its been that way since bjj became dominant (ufc 1)... However, if im not mistaken Mr. Sonnen had enough testosterone for 17 men that night... Silva took Sonnen very seriously after the very first round last time.... Ive watched the fight around 20 times now lol... Furthermore, Sonnen has never been knocked out in a fight and took some nasty shots in that fight... (Also Im no psychology major but I played poker and sold cars at diff points in my life so i can tell when someone is uncomfortable) Sonnen is def in silvas head... ex1 The teeth smashing comment and 2 ppl may like it or not but for one reason or another hes been ducking chael which i didnt believe at first but at some point joe silva said enoughs enough. Silva is the most devastating striker p4p with aldo (yes i think aldo is that good, not technically but after you count in how explosive he is, another subject lol) with freakishly long limbs and incredible takedown defense, due to his limbs along with being left handed and most importantly the best footwork maybe if ever seen from a man his size... If Sonnen and Henderson were to wrestle str8 up I think Henderson would be better... Sonnen being left handed as well, actually matches up better to take silva down, plus many would argue chael has better mma double leg shots anyway... However, nobody imo can intelligently claim he has better Greco Roman obv with Dans being olympic caliber...Im staying away from it on the card but I am taking the over just bcuz Sonnen has never been knocked out and took some clean shots in the first fight.... Im prolly picking, alessio, easton, mendes, guillard, phillipou, maia, le, griffin and silva.... now depending on the odds ortiz isnt bad and neither is sonnen.... Ko of the night is gonna go to phillipou....sub of the night maia over kim... silva over sonnen in rd 4 due to cuts... Griffin decision over ortiz... fight of the night will go to le and cote.
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
@Brewster Sonnen is a way better MMA wrestler than Henderson. Hendo rarely ever uses wrestling. Also yes Chael is still using his TRT but it has to be within the right levels.
@aboynamedtracy its hard to use the jake shields fight for hendo because that was by far the worst weight cut for hendo in his career. He was drained by that cut.
I gotta say Rick, I truly appriciate your MMA\UFC insight. Good stuff there dude.
If Le wins, I'm willing to bet it's a 1st rd ko/tko. And that would likely be spectacular. My guess though is The Predator will be cautious early until Le inevitability gasses and then he'll win by tko in the 3rd. Basically, the longer the fight goes the more it favors Cote.
welcome... I didnt know there was this many mma fans on this site, thats awesome!!
Lets not forget Silva came into the last fight with a broken rib as well. I actually think this is the first fight that Silva has been truley motivated. I expect him to win in devastating fashion. I am excited to see what a motivated Silva is like inthe octagon! Will be tuning in for sure! Also, love the MMA talk on here!
"I'll fire when I'm god damn good and ready! You got that?" - Pete "Maverick" Mitchel
silvas rib wasnt hurt, (hes brazilian and had a bad performance) therefore he was hurt. Furthermore, have you ever had a broken rib? It feels like its impossible to breathe. Im not trying to be condesending but ive had a broken rib and there aint no way I could go 2 minutes even rolling let alone be in a 5 rd war with one of the best in the middleweight division. Everyone pulls out of fights nowadays, and someone as concerned with their legacy as silva, would have no problem pulling out. Also just read in my ug forum Le says "I trained smarter not harder" as if he didnt have conditioning issues already lol
So, how many on here actually roll?
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
ive boxed since i was six, wrestled in hs, and rolled for 3.5 yrs now.
Good deal. I always have a hard time reading through peoples comments. I would rather focus on guys that partake in this life style, not those that play it on XBox.
@Rick just going by what was coming out of blackhouse. I agree, highly doubt the rib was broken but maybe bruised at best. At any rate, I believe Silva didnt take the fight seriously. (like most of his fights) and it will be very interesting to see a highly motivated Silva in the octagon. I should also say Im not a big Silva fan but do appreciate his striking ability. It is amazing at times, especially when Silva wants it to be. I also wish more fighters thought like Le does. Very tired of cards being changed last minute due to injury.
@ Irricor, I find that comment curious. Maybe I misunderstand you. I'd like to think people who don't partake in a sport can know something just as well, if not better, than some who do. I don't really know if that is what you are saying so if you aren't I hope you don't think this is a troll-it isn't.
Do you feel that the 'XBox analysts' are less informed than people who actually partake in a given sport?
irricoir's comment is a dicey one. In mma I personally feel that those of us who do practice see some stuff that others dont. However, I am in no way an elitist, those people make me sick. They are the ones who still try to tell me I dont know anything about "the sport" because I think Nick Diaz beat Carlos Condit. I just want to see the sport grow, any and all audiences should be appreciated and respected. Anyone can come up with a great idea or a new way to look at things not just someone who actively practices.
The comment was not intended to sound like an elitist. In fact, I spoke nothing of myself in it. Seeing as how everyone looks for an angle in this day and age, let me break down what I wrote.
In areas I may not be familiar with or styles that I may be unfamiliar with, I would rather attempt to learn from an educated source one that has been practiced and perfected through trial and error. Analyst may see something that takes place and explain why it has a tendency to happen but the technician can often more times than not demonstrate or explain how it occurred better than the person that sits back and keeps stats. It does not mean because you like to play the XBox or are a gamer that you would not know how to execute a Triangle or ArmBar but for me personally, I would rather here the advice from or thoughts from an experienced fighter. Wrong or right, it is my preference.
Folks really need to stop being so sensitive. Again, nowhere did I mention anything about myself or my abilities or talk about how much of an internet tough guy I am. Sir, your analysis of those that practice see things or can explain the intangibles better is spot on and that was my intent. People need to stop looking for a "fight" on here, I swear.
I don't know who's being sensitive here. I was just asking to elaborate your point, which you did to my satisfaction if that means anything to you.
Brewster, your cool buddy. Never had a problem with you. It is more a response to several different topics on here. It seems there are many contrarians these days. Your question was respectful and I appreciate it.
I think it will be a good fight from what I read from some of Silva's interviews sounds like Sonnen really got under his skin. The fight will be alot like the first one Sonnen will ground and pound for a few rounds but I think Silva will get the TKO in 3rd or 4th round and if he does he might retire.
Ortiz vs Griffin should be fun to watch I hope since its the rubber match it won't go to a decision but I won't hold my breathe.
I am very interested to see Maia's first fight at Welterweight vs Dong Hyun Kim. As Rick stated earlier Maia's standup is below par and that is putting it nicely plus Kim has pretty sick Judo skills. Maia's BBJ is second to none in MMA, so I hope we see some good ground work with these two.
It's good to be home.
Not sure if any of y'all have read it, but a coworker lent me Sam Sheridan's 'Inside The Fighter's Mind', and it's a pretty interesting book ostensibly about MMA and competition. If you like the MMAs I'd imagine that you'd dig the book.
just want to be clear i think irricoir is a good dude lol.... again so glad to see so many mma fans on this site!
If anyone hasnt seen the press conference today I suggest watching it some good stuff on there and the stare down at the end was intense. They had to be seperated at the end and in no way do I think any of this was hyped up.
Without actually seeing the xray of anderson's rib I will take any talk even from the camp of it being broke with a grain of salt. Like I said no doctor in their right mind would have let Anderson take the fight with a broken rib. No fighter walks into the cage 100% everyone is injured to some degree.
Maybe Anderson didnt take Sonnen seriously but honestly I think it had more to do with the fact that Sonnen beat him to the middle and didnt stand right in front of Silva waiting for him to make a move and in turn letting Anderson get his range down like every other opponent of Anderson's does. You watch every fight Anderson has had since he has held the belt and the same mistake that everyone has made not named Chael Sonnen is they stand right in front of Anderson and let him get comfortable. Your not going to beat Anderson like that and for some odd reason Vitor nor Okami picked that up when they fought Silva.
Sonnen used his wrestling to set up his striking and really Sonnen was a pretty green striker in their first fight. The only thing that Sonnen really knew how to do was wreslte and ground and pound. Now his striking has evolved a little bit and he even has some submissions now (not going to work on Anderson at all but its something that helps him open up more opportunities on Silva).
Anderson will not beat Sonnen in a decision when this fight is over. If this lasts all five rounds Sonnen wins. Anderson is going to need to sub Sonnen again (which I think he obviously can do but will be a little more difficult this time around) or Knock him out but even then Chael took some decent hits in the first fight and was still standing. There is a reason that Sonnen has never truly been KO'd ( his record has TKO victories due to corner stoppage and cuts).
BTW I thought Condit had won that fight. Just had to throw that out there!
Griffin just needs to get inside & throw knees into Tito's midsection. If he can't finish, he should consider walking away.
Maia has either become too stubbornly macho or is too concerned with impressing the crowd. Agree with all who realize he should go back to bjj roots and only use improved (but far from formidable) stand-up when forced to do so. Believe he gets it done via 2nd rd submission.
Gotta believe Silva is going to use whatever he can to go after Sonnen, he's very motivated from everything that's been noted.
I'm excited to see him come out and be aggressive instead of being reactive. I don't think sonnen can survive on his feet at all against Anderson. Say what you want about the first fight, but he wasn't the same striker that night at all. I believe his Muay Thai advantage will be the techinque Anderson uses against Sonnen's take downs. I also don't believe this makes it out of the 2nd round. Just my opinion...
Can't say that I've been more excited to see afight, thought GSP vs. kos was close.
Sonnen is outclassed on the feet by a mile and Anderson's BJJ is always dangerous. If Sonnen does get it to the ground, and I think he will at some point, he needs to capitalize quickly. Speaking from experience, mindset is huge when an opponent takes you to the mat. Anderson doesn't seem to panic or buckle, but continues to look for openings. Sonnen will have to be perfect to win this fight, because Silva will dance and keep distance more meaning Sonnen will have to close and potentially open himself to Anderson's striking. I don't think you'll see Silva stand flat footed in front of Sonnen and try to toy with him like he's done to other people in the past. Sonnen's take downs are too effective. Unless of course Sonnen gets dazed at some point. Anderson also will have trained from his back extensively in camp. Sonnen has a history of giving up submissions, to Anderson included, and Silva will be looking for it early. Anderson's length and flexibility make him extremely hard to ground and pound. He's so gangly but strong at the same time. He makes reverses or submissions from the bottom look easy. Can Sonnen be perfect for 25 minutes? I don't know. Because the likelihood of him finishing Silva is low.
My guess is 2nd or 3rd round tko by Silva. Sonnen shoots a lot early, missing on most as Anderson uses his jab and speed to keep distance. He may land one but I think Silva slips out or gets back up after a submission attempt. Getting jabbed in the face repeatedly slows anyone down and Silva locks in his range by the end of the first/beginning of the second. Elbows, knees, kicks, and hooks from ridiculous angles follow.
well said, JD...
FWIW, seeing your picture. I'll change so I don't copycat..
fwiw- vinny mangalhaes claims sonnen can submit silva now lol how about just learning to stay out of a triangle.... gotta walk b4 you can run, but who am i to shatter dreams
Took your advice BHardy & watched the presser... CP Sonnen did not disappoint. His self aggrandizing rants are priceless. My favorite of his is still the one aimed @ GSP but he was wildly entertaining again this time.
I think its going to be a great card. Silva/Sonnen should be good. Like most of you have said, Silva was caught off guard for the first fight. He was getting really cocky up until that fight, and I think he will be WELL prepared for this fight. He got lucky (can argue skill) with the armbar in the last fight. Sonnen killed him for 4.5 rounds and that shows you he CAN hang with Silva. I don't think anybody has given Sonnen a chance, but remember... Sonnen now has CONFIDENCE that he can fight with Silva. That is half the battle and it makes him very dangerous!! Should be interesting if Sonnen can hang with Silva at his best. I'm not even sure we have see Silva at his best, so we shall see.
As far as the Tito/Forrest fight, it could be interesting. I would hope that Forest comes to fight. Sometimes he looks great and sometimes he looks bad. Luckily, Tito is a brawler and not a quick striker. I think Forrest knocks him out. Should be a HUGE card and I'd expect a great card all around!

Sucks he won after sonned slipped. I would have much rather seen Chael get dropped from his feet....
