So apparently a university-provided iPad isn't a violation (unless Gene Smith goofed this up too...kidding, I think). The question is, will they have 3G coverage?
Saw this coming when the basketball team was stoked that every locker at Nebraska had an iPad, which I'm sure will be part of the Schott renovations.
That's roughly 1,100 athletes times however much an iPad costs (the iPad 2, the 3? whatever) over 2 years.

Stealing a page from Michigan I see lol
I don't know about student-athletes, but I have heard that many schools are providing all incoming freshmen with i-pads.
BTW: Ramzy just tweeted that all Indiana student-athletes would be receiving Zunes. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
It has definitely been a common theme amongst schools, a good one at that, until it becomes an arms race and they start giving more and more. I bet an SEC school gives macbooks real soon with a ton of $$$$$ when you open it up.
maybe this is just me, but i never understood what the advantage of an ipad is.... its fancy, its cool, but its basically an oversized, more expensive, non phone, version of the iphone. regardless, i have no significant quams about this, although it does seem a little unneccesary
The last line of the report on the i-pads for OSU SA's :
"The iPads will be available to the student-athletes on an issuance and retrieval basis."
So, basically the i-pads belong to the university and are being given to SA's to use while they are at OSU and then returned.
I don't understand why schools do this. What's the point?
@Woody - to look cool for recruiting purposes. Other than that, I don't see the "enhanced educational value."
It seems like it could be a pretty cool tool, to watch film on or to study the playbook on.
Or play Angry Birds during English 110.
Athletic Department is budgeting $400K for this initiative.
