KONY 2012

I just watched this video about 5 minutes ago. it turned me into a believer. and as somebody that is gonna try and support this I thought I should share this with the people on 11w. i don't really have time to explain to you what it's about but just trust me, a fellow Ohio state fan. and I know it's not Ohio state or football but when youre watching this, take 30 minutes out of your day and pay attention to this. this is some serious s*** that needs to be taken care of. it'll change the way you think I promise. thank you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

My roommate and I just watched this. The group that started this movement should be applauded, but in the end it won't do anything. Look at how long it took us to nab Usama bin Laden. We only committed 100 advisors to the aid of the Ugandan military and to help them in the tracking and capturing of this guy and his 5 upper level cronies. Instead of wasting the capital on this pointless endeavor that will become another decade long manhunt, you send out a small cell and eliminate the guy. The Israeli's have done it with great success for decades. Don't dick around with the ICC and their bureaucratic processes, eliminate the guy and his cronies.

Edit: I shouldn't say it won't accomplish anything, the public awareness of this issue has grown exponentially due to the group's endeavors. My point is instead of waiting on the ICC and Ugandan military to capture and bring this man to trial, send out a small cell to eliminate him now.

I totally agree with you. I think with the 100 advisors it might not end it right away but at least it's a start.

and they should just send in the seals and call it a day.

It's amazing to me the "bad guys" the world will try to stop and the ones they leave to be free.  Everyone knows about Sadam, Bin Laden, and guys like Milosevic, but hardly anyone could tell you who Kony or guys like Forday Sanko and Charles Taylor were and how many people died as a result of their actions.  I wrote a paper for a history class about Sierra Leone and the decade of civil war they had.  The research I did to write the paper actually had me in quite a funk for a long long time.  I won't say depression, just a real sick feeling about the world we live in.  The stories were horrible.  Seems like unless there is something to be gained by going after some of these bastards, the rest of the world doesn't care.

I'm all for stopping him but this country would change their mind and start complaining about 2 weeks after we went over there. We like to talk about doing what is right but don't like the consequences of doing what it right.

The US sent 100 'military advisors' to Uganda last October. Congress signed into law a bill aimed to remove Kony from power in 2010. Public awareness is great, but it's not like the powers-that-be are unaware.

I understand it's political and it's kinda against the point of 11w, but I was really moved by this and I was hoping that other people would feel the same way and try to make a difference. I didnt think there would be a better place with better people than 11w to show this too.

William's picture

@BuckeyeW I've that article and another one as well. The Invisible Children group is a group for raising awareness and just that. Which is what I said they should be applauded for, not their efforts to actually help increase the lives of the children who have been kidnapped and militarized. The fact that IC made over 8.6 million last year and only 31% went to active aid is shady. Then again Kony hasn't been present in Uganda since 2006, and our deployment of 100 military advisors to Uganda has been inefficient to put it nicely. Kony should be eliminated, but there is much more to worry about on the African continent, like the stabilization of most of their economies as well as the increase in sanitation for their constituents. That continent has a LONG way to go as a whole.

This stuff is incredibly lame.  Readers of this site don't delve into the comments section of an incredibly specific website like this to be bombarded with the world saving causes we see all day on our crappy facebook newsfeeds.  If the comments section turns into political crap after the primaries are done I'm gonna flip.  This site is my escape from the nonsense I'm being fed in the rest of the world 24/7, even the sports sites.  If not always about Ohio State, at least leave it about football.  Take your donation trolling elsewhere.

First off, let me say that I do not in any way support Kony and would like him to be brought to justice just as much as the next person, but I am a bit sketpical of the presentation and the organization.

1) The organization uses a Cayman Island bank account.  Suspect.

2) Kony is no longer in Uganda, yet the film creator continues to use Uganda as a central theme in the documentary.  Kony left Uganda in 2005 and did not "expand," but rather has been on the run after the war charges were brought against him.  He's more or less fleeing to live and not expanding his army.

3) Many lawmakers came out today saying there were no plans to pull the 100 U.S. advisors in Africa.  It's like IC got paranoid because they didn't catch Kony right away, so they want to drub up all of this public awareness, but their goal was already met over a year ago.  Why is this documentary just now coming out?

4) 2012...has to be.  Really? WTF? Is the mission a failure if they capture him in 2013? Kinda weird.

5) Sort of going off of point 3, but does thousands of re-tweets of "KONY 2012!" really help? Their goal was met, I don't quite understand the need to plaster it over every social media possible except to educate people on him.  Still, I'm not going to call my senator or representative to make sure they don't pull the advisors out of Africa when there is no indication they are going to do so.

6) I'm not sure why, but I found the use of the director's son a little distateful.  Probably just personal opinion but I feel like the kid is getting exploited.

7) Several people from Uganda have tweeted that Kony is not their biggest problem, it's things like diseases (some of which are not curable) and poverty.  The film portrays Kony as the biggest problem in Uganda and that all other issues will subside if he's gone, but it's simply not true.

Again, not a Kony fan whatsoever, I just think this hype is out of proportion.  Kony isn't strengenthing, he's out of Uganda (just wish Uganda wasn't a main point in the film), and there were no threats to pull out the U.S. advisors.  Seems like IC got all paranoid about nothing, or were upset that he wasn't caught yet and chose to make a film about it.  I don't know, maybe it's just me being skeptical.

Before you all jump on the bandwagon, read both sides. Invisible Children refuses to be independently audited and has been descibed as "dangerous" by a professor political scientist at Yale. Propaganda comes in many forms, so don't just listen to one side. The government has done something about it, but we can't just invade Uganda and kill him. The others side is explained here, with sources from many sites: http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/qm349/why_the_kony_documentary_and_invisible_children/

Best parts:

Secondly, I would like to address the highly inaccurate content of your video. Your video did not leave the viewer any more knowledgeable about the conflict in Uganda, but only emotionally assaulted. I could not help but notice how conveniently one-sided the “explanation” in your video was. There was absolutely no mention of the role of the Ugandan government and military in the conflict. Let alone the role of the U.S. government and military. The only information given is “KONY MUST BE STOPPED.”

As Chris Blattman, a political scientist at Yale, writes on the topic of IC’s programming, “There’s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa. […] It hints uncomfortably of the White Man’s Burden. Worse, sometimes it does more than hint. The savior attitude is pervasive in advocacy, and it inevitably shapes programming. Usually misconceived programming.”

A new requirement for sharing the Kony video: http://i.imgur.com/f5kWl.jpg

I mean, IC came to my school last year, which was cool. They played a similar 6 minute video (which was all used in the 30 minute one) and sold stuff. They have good intentions, but you've got to see both sides of the story. I agree, he must be stopped, but inciting emotional, viral explosion leads to extreme overreaction.

I mean, it's not like anyone in America can possibly support his actions, but realize that IC may not be taking the best route for it. The government has already taken action:

In May 2010, U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law the Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act,[21] legislation aimed at stopping Kony and the LRA. The bill passed unanimously in the United States Senate on March 11. On May 12, 2010, a motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill was agreed to by voice vote (two-thirds being in the affirmative) in the House of Representatives.[22] In November Obama delivered a strategy document to Congress, asking for more funding to disarm Kony and the LRA.[23] In October 2011, Obama authorized the deployment of approximately 100 combat-equipped U.S. troops to central Africa.[24] Their goal is to help regional forces remove Kony and senior LRA leaders from the battlefield. "Although the U.S. forces are combat-equipped, they will only be providing information, advice, and assistance to partner nation forces, and they will not themselves engage LRA forces unless necessary for self-defense," Obama said in a letter to Congress.[citation needed]

I watched the film on youtube and I just get the feeling that the filmmaker is pretty intent on playing off of the "Occupy Movement" (see many losers who should be embarassed), and using that to perhaps indoctrinate the younger generation and take advantage of that with a political movement ... it just seems political to me ... a whole flavor or protest to it or something ... I don't know what it is exactly, it could be the whole "has to be done in 2012" thing ... something a little strange and forced

So you're saying we can't talk about national college football? Or Xbox 360? Or golf? Or ponies? Or other conferences? Or violations outside of the B1G? This is "off topic land", meaning not football, basketball, site stuff, non-revenue sports or a ticket market. To say "Ohio State and B1G stuff only" is silly. Hmmmmmmmmm.

This is kind of gray area. Since the mod (RBuck) says it was okay, I'm not sure there's any banhammering that's going to happen. I mean it is kind of apolitical-no real human could condone Kony's (which apparently is pronounced "cone" fwiw) actions.

I come here for Buckeye sports, or Buckeye 'anything else'.

The no political talk rule is largely in place to prevent DEM vs GOP bloodbaths in the comments, which would drive me nuts.

This is an off-topic forum and the guy is a war criminal. I don't have a problem with stuff like this and I think as long as we stay away from US political talk, we're good.

If things get out of hand in a Tory vs Labour debate some day, I may come to regret this, but for now, we should be okay.
