Running in 2k12

I started writing today at Stride Nation along with some really talented NBA writers (Tom Ziller of SB Nation, Dan Devine of Yahoo!'s Ball Dont Lie) and bloggers (Ryan Hudson of SB Nation). I know Chief and LA Buckeye are both runners - I hope you guys can drop on by and join the conversation over there. If nothing else, you guys can make fun of my emo whining about running. You can find my first piece here.

If anybody is interested, my 2k12 race plans are: Tobacco Road 13.1 (Cary, NC; March), Parkway Classic (Arlington, VA; April), the God's Country 26.2 (Potter County, PA; June), and the JFK 50 Miler (Washington County, MD; November).

Anybody have any 'rlvnt' race plans for this year?

Good luck, Denny. My 2012 scheduled races so far are:

Calico 50K (Barstow, CA) - January 22

Montana de Oro 50K (Morro Bay, CA) - February 12

Ray Miller 50 Mile (Malibu, CA) - February 25

Leona Divide 50 Mile (Lake Hughes, CA) - April 28

Bishop High Sierra 50 Mile (Bishop, CA) - May 19

Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Race (Angeles National Forest - Wrightwood to Altadena, CA) - July 21 and 22

To date, my longest race has been 50K. This is going to be one hell of a year if I can stay healthy.

I'm getting ready to be in a position (for the next 3-4 yrs) were no races will take place...i'm hoping to be able to run, period. My goal for the year is to run 1200 though.

I'll write a blog post tomorow...

Either of you on Daily Mile? I was but shut it down the same day I closed my twitter and blog; I thought I was going to Gitmo...

Nope... I use Runkeeper to store my Garmin logs and commentary about how runs went. My brother was at Gitmo for about a year. He couldn't say much about his time there but it sounds like a good thing you didn't go. His one comment, that I'll never forget, was "I was forced to see and do things I never want to see or do again the rest of my life."

Yeah I am on the dailymile, though I don't interact much. Mostly I like it for the graphs.

Ok; Denny I sent you an e-mail; I went from 0 to 3 races planned in 2012.

Awesome.  Good to meet runners to keep motivated.

Last marathon was Columbus 2004, pre-birth of my first child.  Been struggling through some half marathons for the past 7 years, but don't have the time to devote to being marathon-serious these days.  Can't ever stop running though.  Will do some local races this year, and keep saying I want to do my 4th marathon before I turn 40.  Tick tock....just under 3 years to live up to that.

I'm not really a big runner, but I'm trying to be a little more active. I ran my first 5k last year, as well as the Warrior Dash. This year I'll be going for a 10k, another Warrior Dash, and the Tough Mudder in Cleveland.

I haven't done any of the Warrior Dash type things, but I've done a Ragnar Relay and that was a delightful experience. Apparently there's a run around Columbus relay going on this year, sounds pretty fun.

My second piece is up now. I won't spam anymore beyond this point.

Ah ha! You've caught me. This is why I must run: my natural state is pictured above.

Flip- What did you think of the Warrior Dash?  I'm considering doing one of those this year, heard it's as good time.

I did the Loveland Amazing Race when I lived down there in '09 and had a ball.  I've always wanted to do a Great Urban Race - Columbus had one this past year- but couldn't find a partner.

I'm by no means speedy, but I have done the Columbus Half ( '09 and '11) twice.

Art - I had a great time. Went with a big group of friends and we all dressed up in costumes. I would say the course itself isn't what you'd expect if you're a runner. It's all muddy and hilly, with the obstacles scattered in between, and very little flat land to get your run on. I actually found the muddy hills more difficult than the obstacles themselves. I probably should've spent more time on the stepper than the treadmill when training, but overall it's a very doable course. A few of my friends aren't really the active type and they got it done with no problem. Only saw a few older people keeled over on the sides that probably didn't finish the race.

If you want an easier course, sign up for an early morning phase so the track isn't so beat up and the temperature hasn't peaked yet.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep that in mind.  Where was the race you ran?

I went to the one in Carrollton, OH... aka in the middle of nowhere. Cell phone service was pretty much gone for all wireless providers, which could factor into your planning. It made it somewhat difficult to meet up with other friends. Walkie talkies would have come in handy.

Was a regular Clydesdale-class racer until last winter when I encountered an excruciating pain in one of my knees. The orthopedist diagnosed it as a torn meniscus (not repairable -- it's on the inside of the joint). Confirmed by MRI. He then told me if I continue to run, I'd need a knee replacement within ten years. (I was only 45 at the time.)

So NC now a former runner. :-{

In HS, I used to have to run the cross country course in Carrollton, I know exactly where that is.  I'm thinking the race is in/near Logan this time which is still middle of nowhere except it's the Hocking Hills.

I'll echo the sentiments above about the warrior dash (and the tough mudder for that matter).  course was actually tougher than i expected.  LOTS of hills, which kill me.  Obstacles werent shit.

@Blazers34 - Did you experience bottlenecking at any of the TM obstacles?

blazers34's picture
blazers34 on 4 Jan 2012 - 4:26pm #

not really, no.  the race started off with a pretty steep hill that spread our 'heat' out pretty well.

Ressurecting this guy to self-advertise a touch: I ran a 50-miler this past weekend and wrote a race review if anybody wants to read it.

Also, I'm not going to be running much more the rest of 2k12 because my legs were pretty sore after this race and I want them to work in the future.
