Dear Friends:
The New Year approaches, bringing many opportunities for The Ohio State University to extend knowledge to all corners of the world. This is only possible because of the immense talents of our students, the creative work of our faculty, and the generous support of our alumni and friends. I am tremendously grateful for the efforts of so many on behalf of this University.This year, the University received the largest philanthropic gift in history from alumnus and Board of Trustees Chair Leslie Wexner. His poignant message — "But for Ohio State, I would have never been able to go to college" — reminds us of the unparalleled power of education to change lives. I invite you, if you have not done so, to take a few moments to share what Ohio State means to you.
Earlier this month, I had the honor of presiding over my 46th commencement at Ohio State, and I will say there are few things that make me as proud as our remarkable students. Here are a few other highlights from 2011 that surely deserve mention:
- A steady rise in our ranking among America's top colleges
- Our academic Medical Center named among the nation's top 10
- Twenty faculty — the most of any university — elected as Fellows of the American Association of the Advancement of Science
- Our international enrollment reaching top-10 status
- A record year in fundraising, both in amount raised and number of donors
I look forward to building upon these and other successes in the coming year. Together, we will continue to write the great stories of this University. Thank you for your efforts and firm friendship — through Summer's heat or Winter's cold. And know of my best wishes for a fabulous 2012.
