Well, not exactly "I", since I was away from home. But my wife and 1 month old daughter were there. Two guys broke in with all the lights on and the tv blaring.
My wife ran upstairs with the baby and grabbed our Ruger SP101 .357. I guess between hearing the first chamber clear and my wife yelling that she was armed and dangerous they got scared and ran. Not before stealing a mac book pro and another laptop.
Merry Christmas, I guess.

Be safe.
vacuuming sucks
Man, that really sucks. Sorry to hear about that, but glad everyone is okay.
That does suck! Glad the wifey & kid are ok tho!
Thanks guys, all things considered it could have been much worse.
And that's why I've got a gun as well. Glad everything turned out all right. The brazen entry into an occupied house is what really gets me. It sounds like your wife didn't panic too much though and did exactly what she needed to in order to protect herself and her baby. Like you said, it could've been much worse. I hope she doesn't get a case of the nerves or let this incident get to her too much over the next several days. She really sounds like she's a special woman and someone to be proud of, nice catch.
Congrats on the baby as well . . . so do gun lessons start tomorrow for her? :-p
Dude that makes me so freaking angry for you. Im glad everything turned out OK. I work third shift and my wife is 7 1/2 months pregnant. It is hard to not think about.
Wow, I'm glad everybody is okay. I live out in the country, and I still make a habit of locking my doors. I have a wife and three daughters at home (the youngest is 3 months), and I don't even want to imagine anything happening to them.
I am estatic your family is alright. I am new to the blog and can offer some advice for your situation. I used to train SWAT teams and am a NRA Chief Range Safety Officer (I instruct other range safety officers). A .357 Mag is nice, little powerful for the home as it can easily over penetrate walls. If your wife has never used a gun begin with using .38 rounds so she gets used to the recoil and then gradually move up to the more powerful .357 rounds. .38 are cheaper to practice with and still pack a punch. Many experts suggest using a shotgun with buckshot as a home defense weapon. Multiple projectiles and it is more an area gun, she really doesn't have to aim. There are some cheap stage coach, double barreled (short barrel) guns on the market and a 20 gauge packs one heck of a punch. She can fire it from the hip. Again I am very happy your family was not injured.
There is nothing like the sound of injecting a shell into the chamber of a 12 gauge pump to put fear into a bad guy. My personal choice for home protection.

Sorry to hear but glad everyone is ok. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. The only positive I can think of is your daughter is too young to remember this.

Glad everything worked out and nobody got hurt Roger.

Roger, as someone who also experienced a home invasion while my ex-husband and I were sleeping (I woke up, he of course did not) I would highly recommend that your wife get some type of counseling. There are many agencies that help victims of crime deal with the aftermath. While everything is ok right now and everyone is relieved of the outcome, trauma can exhibit itself months or even years later (hence the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Being violated in your own home and having to get a weapon is extremely traumatic and life as you once knew it, changes. This is not to say it changes for the worse, not at all. But, it does change and you need to be prepared for feelings you couldn't anticipate. I developed a fear of flying that I had never had before and required at least two Xanax to get on a plane. Being a victim of crime makes you feel powerless even when you have a weapon in your home.
I am not your biggest supporter but I am thankful your family was not harmed. It is strange how a persons world changes when they realize that the world is not as safe as they used to believe. To further expound on what Pam said, make sure your wife understands that she doesn't have to feel powerless. She took the appropriate actions as far as what you described. No one ever won a fight laying in the fetal position and you can choose to feel like a victim and live in fear or you can overcome an incident, with time, and know that your actions potentially saved your life and the life of your child. That should reaffirm your wife's confidence.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
I'm glad everyone is ok. My prayers are with you and your family.
I'm also very glad everyone was safe. It's good your wife knew how to properly handle the gun too. Just curious, what city/state are you in?
We should strive to keep thy name, of fair repute and spotless fame...
(Also, I'm not a dude)
All: thanks for the kind words and support.
@TENGAUGE: She's actually an excellent marksman and has ran a good deal of both .38 and .357 rounds through her gun on the range. I am going to be getting a shotgun, though. What do you think about .410's for home security?
@Pam and @IRRICOIR Thanks for the advice. I think if anything she feels more empowered now than before, but it will certainly be something to keep an eye on.
@ARTBKWARD We live in Toledo.
Roger,
I am glad your wife is a good marksman and practices. No sense having a gun in the house if you don't know how to use it is what I always tell my students.
.410s are a little light but are easily handled. They have a short shot dispersion and limited range which would be ideal in the home. Make sure you find buckshot or just get slugs. .410 shotguns with 3" chambers can shoot 000 Buckshot loads quite well. Average cost is about $14 for a box of 20. You get four pellets per shell coming out the barrel at about 1200 feet per second with each shot. I would opt for either a semi-auto or a double barreled model. Pumps are nice but you have to practice with them a deal more than the semis or the doubles.
My home defense gun is a double barreled 10ga (hence the nickname) with 000 buckshot. Very nasty. Try like Pam said to get this behind you in some form or another and don't let the fear overload or override you. Take care of yourself and your family for they are what is important in life.
That was quite a scare but at least everybody is safe. What the hell gets into people to do something like that?

I'm glad you are all safe.
