Thanks for this, BED. I think it's easy for Buckeye fans to remember all of Meyer's successes and not so easy for them to remember that Urban had his own difficulties with NCAA violations. If you have to choose between him and Tressel, why not pick the one who is a proven Buckeye champion?

Decision #1: What's best for the program?

No reputable college football program re-hire somebody who chose to break rules and lie about it. That means Tressel is out.

Urban Meyer is a candidate because he's arguably the best college football coach in America, he's available, he's from Ohio, an Ohio State grad (grad school) and was an assistant under Earle Bruce.

Finally, Meyer's reputation is not in question - unlike, Tressel's, who - regrettably - ended his coaching career at Ohio State, ignominiously.

Hoody, I'm glad we agree about one thing: the hiring decision should be based on what's best for the program.

The difference is that you seem to think that our program's reputation is paramount. You started your response with, "No reputable college football program..." As I said above, I don't think that what other people think (i.e. our "reputation") should determine what is best for our program.

As I said above, if you believe all the stuff ESPN and Sports Illustrated have told you about Jim Tressel then there is no help for you. I can't convince you. But if you are choosing between two NCAA rules violators, I say choose the one that is a proven Buckeye champion.

I mean you no disrespect, first of all. All of us can disagree. Disagreement's ok. We're all Buckeye fans, here. We all want Ohio State to win the MNC, own the B1G and vanquish the Wolverines - every year.

But, we can still disagree.

Meyer's not under formal scrutiny. Tressel has been and still is. That's the difference. Even if the NCAA were not to lower the boom on Tressel (Show cause), tOSU can't bring Tressel back, as head coach or AD - because Tressel broke the rules, lied about it and perpetrated a cover-up.

Menexnus what don't you get? We can't hire Tressel back, that is what is best for the program. Also players under Tressel committed more NCAA violations than Meyer, and if you want to bring up Meyer's players' criminal record, why not look at our own? We had MORE players on our team that had been charged with criminal offenses than on Florida's team at the beginning of the 2010 season. Everyone here appreciates what Tressel did for the team, the school, and the community. We aren't buying into what has been propagated by SI, or ESPN, we're thinking rationally... Tressel cannot and will not come back, he's gone.

I have no problem with Meyer's character and I'm sure his recruiting prowess will pay dividends. I'm concerned about his longevity.

William, tell me what your reasons are, and I'll tell you which one I don't get. All you said is, "We can't hire Tressel back, that is what's best for the program." But you didn't provide any reasons for these two assertions. (The rest of your post was just talking about Urban Meyer and comparing violations.)

So provide me some reasons for your assertions, and I'll tell you what's wrong with them.

Alright you say that by rehiring Tressel we are doing the "right" thing. In what way is that doing the right thing? If anything that is showing the NCAA and CFB that we do care more about wins than integrity or what is "right." Don't give me the tired and worn out excuse that he was protecting his players. At first that may have been a viable excuse, but he was later informed by Cicero that his players weren't involved in drug trafficking, and that they were safe. At that time why was he not forthcoming with the information he had? He lied to the NCAA folks, it doesn't matter what spin you want to put on it, he lied, and lying is lying, that's pretty simple.

There is no way Tressel is re-hired to coach at Ohio State. I do think his accomplishments will be recognized favorably in the future by the university but his days patrolling the sidelines at The Shoe are over.

William said it. He lied to the NCAA. Whatever his reasons were, he lied. The NCAA will hammer us with much worse penalties and we will constantly be under investigation with a fine tooth comb if we were to re-hire someone that lied to the NCAA.

Ok, fine, he lied. It was a mistake, and he is paying for it. The NCAA will tell us soon what the penalty is for him and for the university. But once those penalties have been served, what is to prevent us from rehiring him?

William says he lied over and over again, as if that makes it evident why he can never coach again. I hope William has never lied at his job, because based on his logic, his career should be over now.

Riggins says the NCAA will hammer us with worse penalties. But this is wrong. I'm saying rehire Tressel *after* all NCAA-imposed penalties have been served. Once he and the university have served their penalties, the NCAA can't penalize them more. After Tressel has served whatever penalty the NCAA hands out, he is eligible to coach again. Period. They can't re-penalize him if he is hired by OSU instead of some other school.

Riggins also says that OSU's program would be investigated with a fine tooth comb. I'm willing to accept that he may be right about that, but that doesn't concern me. OSU is already being investigated with a fine tooth comb, and that probably won't change no matter who we hire. Plus, I think Tressel has learned from his mistake and wouldn't make that kind of mistake again. So let them bring their fine tooth comb. I'm not afraid of it.

I never said lied over and over. I said he lied to the NCAA which he did. We'll have to agree to disagree on this topic. I appreciate what Tressel did, its just I believe that we should move on. Anyway I agree with Bucksfan, the 'Shoe is going to be rocking tonight, pregaming all day today. F**k Wisconsin!

Not to sound like a broken record but I don't want Meyer at the helm either.

#1 I don't think his massive ego will let him admit to himself that he's done with coaching. Health, nerves, whatever caused him to retire at UF -- that hasn't gone away.

#2 His offensive system (which is almost identical to RR's) is a gimick that can easily be solved by B1G DCs. My big fear is that by the time Meyer figures out he no longer wants to coach, we'll have all of these system-specfic Meyer recruits that the next coach is going to be stuck with.

#3 And now, as Bed linked to above, all these stories about Gator players are coming out now. I DON'T WANT tOSU TURNING INTO THE NEXT THUG-U! Tressel had his own problems with entitled players but at least he didn't have that sort of bull-shit going on. As an Ohioan and tOSU alumni, I would become an activist in the FireMeyer campaign should that stuff transpire on our campus.

Gimmick. Put Meyer's Spread Option in the B1G and you'll get the same results as RR. Guess we're incapable of learning this lesson from our rivals.

If you think Urban Meyer's offense is almost identical to RR's you are terribly mistaken. They are both spread offenses. The comparisons stops there. Its like saying Byron Leftwich is an identical quaterback to Michael Vick.

Plus, if an offense can have the success Urban's did in the SEC, it will most likely have even much more success in the Big Ten. The SEC is much better than the Big Ten any which way you put it.
