Small request regarding signatures. My honest opinion is that I don't think there is a place for them in the blogosphere, BUT if we're gonna have them: Can you somehow make them distinguishable from the actual comments? Like a line right above the sig, separating it from the post, like vB forums do.

Can't tell you how many times I've already read someone's post and then read their signature thinking it was part of the comment.

Not a huge complaint, just something I'm used to with every other forum on the Internetz.

In the forum, the replies are flat, while on stories and blog posts, they're nested.

For the forum, your best shot would be to use the quote button in the toolbar to quote who you are replying to.

I thought you said we were going to be able to still post without a login? I'm not seeing any controls to do so, just "login or register to post."

Also, are you serious on the password requirements? Someone stealing my blog account is *not* a high priority. Your password requirements are as stringent as my bank. Personally I use the same moderately insecure password on all throwaway accounts like this because if someone hacks it it doesn't matter... requiring a high end password for every little site is just going to end up with people reusing a password that does matter (such as their email or banking password) for a site who probably does not store them quite as securely.

In the "Recent Comments" Feed at the center top of the main 11W page, is there some way to restore the identity of the commenter?

It used to be that you could read who was posting the comment.  The Recent Comments feed would say something like:  MGoBlueFan:  Ohio State Sux Hurr Hurr

Now, the Recent Comment feed simply would say "Ohio State Sux Hurr Hurr" without indicating the identity of the commenter.  Is there was a way to restore that function?

Maybe. We were bombarded with too much spam when we had anonymous commenting turned on for the first day.

Also, are you serious on the password requirements?

It's a suggestion more than a requirement.

In the "Recent Comments" Feed at the center top of the main 11W page, is there some way to restore the identity of the commenter?

Possibly. Though I am honestly leaning towards killing that because you can get that information (and more) from the "Recent Posts" link in your user box to the top right.

It would be nice if you got some type of notification when someone replied to one of your posts in a story.

I know it's possible to implement this through a module, so I'll look into it.

Maybe. We were bombarded with too much spam when we had anonymous commenting turned on for the first day.

So what kind of a system did you use to prevent this on the old site? Were you manually removing spam? I guess my feeling is that 90% of the time, for me, a comment on this sort of site is fairly off-the-cuff. If I have to go log in... the end result is that it normally isn't worth it to me, and I don't comment.

It's a suggestion more than a requirement.

At least when I was registering, it rejected about five different passwords before I had one complex enough to be let in. Sorry to seem too grumpy. Still love the site, but I think I'm going to be a bit of a curmudgeon for a while on the new design.

So what kind of a system did you use to prevent this on the old site?

I had modified WP's core and the solution was actually pretty slick and very effective, but the downside was that whenever I wanted to upgrade WP, I had to jump through a bunch of hoops. I probably do eventually want to bring anon commenting back, but not until I can come up with a bullet-proof solution.

I like the up/down votes on a post as well, that way the "trolls comments" can be hidden.  We are ALL about being fair, but, there's been some things posted here that a moderator on most sites would hide or delete all together.  Also, wouldn't be nice to be able to rank users screen names?  Like Gene (windstar I think is his s/n) who is doing tons of recruiting posts, it would be nice to rank him so new users know who to follow for some of his comments and his comments could be located on a central page (I think you may already have this, but wasn't sure).  Plus, it would give some of us (of the competitive nature) reasons to bring meaningful content from all over the web to the community here at 11W.  Just a thought.

There should be a regular feature "Fun With Anagrams." An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase. Sometimes, in the spirit of the mediocre but best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code, nerds will use anagrams to decode secret messages hidden within names/phrases. Some examples:

Urban F. Meyer = February Men

Brady Hoke = Bakery, doh! Coach Hoke= Cake hooch

That Team Up North = Another Phat Mutt

University of Michigan = Fair, unhygienic vomits

Penn State University = True Vanity Ineptness

Eleven Warriors = Rear Wolverines/Rears Wolverine. This hidden message makes me wonder if 11W is really a counter-intelligence operation, except 11W can also be rescrambled (or decoded) to read . . . A Wolverine errs.

Jim Tressel = Jester Slim

I think a weekly feature on a past Buckeye player: rehashing their playing career and catching up with them, as to what they are doing now, would  be interesting.  Past football players during football seasons (Fall, Spring and Summer Slow Time) and Basketball/wrestlers during the winter.

Sort of like the old Sporting News articles "Where are they Now?"

You could also do articles on an upcoming opponent's past great player.

I think it would be nice to be able to "like" or "thumbs up" comments.  That would eliminate the unnecessary comment replies saying things like "i totally agree" or "this ^"

It would be nice to be able to show another commenter some love after he/she made a strong argument or chimed in with a funny joke related to the topic.

For instance, I would have "liked" JohnBlairGoBucks 's comment above because I agree with him that a Where Are They Now? type article would be interesting.

I have a suggestion that isn't necessarily a site suggestion as much as it is a weekly story suggestion.

I would (and I don't think I am alone) like a weekly edition of "What it Means to be a Buckeye" as told by former players, current players, TBDBITL members, professors, students, alumni, custodial staff...anyone that has a passion for being a Buckeye and their role in being such. I find that the further I find myself removed from my time on campus ('83-'87) the more nostalgic I become for my time spent there. Younger Bucks may not agree as much as the time for reflection has yet to engage them, but I would read each story with fond memories.

With the profound expansion in readership and the potential for swaying those elusive recruits that find themselves on the fence regarding their eventual choice to be made, a little personal insight from those who are, have and will continue to be Buckeyes through and through might be of interest.

Just a thought.

Buddhabuck: you're on to something, but you have to stick to actual anagrams.

Some people feel that the anagrams are incriminating to Craig James, who allegedly KILLED FIVE HOOKERS while at SMU.

For example, some anagrams of "Craig James ESPN" include "campaign's jeers," "massacring jeep" (what kind of car did he drive while at SMU?), "screaming japes," and "scream jag penis."

However, what if I told you that there were really six dead hookers and that they were murdered by axes? "Six dead hookers" = "Hoke did ax roses." A slang meaning of "roses" = "most beautiful girls."

But that's not all . . . "kill hookers" = "hoke's kill'or" and "murder hookers" = "red Hoke rumors."

There are some really great ideas here. Thanks for the suggestions. Here's a quick rundown of them as well as a status update or my thoughts on each, more or less:

  • Karma System: This is coming soon. We have been working on it, but there are a lot of bugs to sort out. We like this for a couple of reasons: It rewards regular contributors, gives the community a built-in way of policing jerks and enables us to do some cooler things to fuel site growth like referral points.
  • Comment Page Scrolling at the Top: This is something we may decide to do. In the meantime, you can easily hit Ctrl+End on Windows or just End on Mac to quickly advance to the bottom of the page without scrolling. I know, it's a workaround, but it should do the trick for now.
  • Comment Notification System: This is something we will definitely do when we can get to it. You'll have a checkbox on your user profile that you can toggle on/off as to whether to receive email notifications when someone replies to something you say.
  • Threaded/Chronological Comments Option: We may or may not impement this. As is, for most content, it's threaded + chronological, which eleminates the need to @ reply someone, but admittedly, also poses the problem of super-skinny comments in threads that are nested a few levels. Forums were setup as straight chronological to resemble traditional forums.
  • What it Means to Be a Buckeye Series: This is a great idea, but I'm not sure we hav the clout/scale to achieve this yet. I'm afraid that if we tried it now, we'd get like two people lined up and then nothing for a while. :) As we grow, and get a beat writer (have you donated yet? panhandle, panhandle...), we'll hopefully be able to tackle more exotic content concepts like this.
  • 2012 Football Schedule: This is relatively easy to do and we'll get to it soon. Would also be cool to get future schedules up as well.

Right now, our focus is on stability and site uptime as we're experiencing crazy growth. Couple that with the fact that the lone tech guy (me) just became a father for the first time and I'm still figuring out how best to balance my time between this site, my family and my day job.

Thanks again for the suggestions and feel free to keep them coming. We listen to every one of them.

rather than email notifications, you could have a facebook style notification on the site? It isn't really worth the trouble of getting an email every time someone replies, but if there was a section for like "Recent Activity" but only recent activity related to you (i.e. helmet stickers, replies, etc.)

Just my 2 cents, overall I actually find this to be one of the more easier navigated blogs out there.

It would be helpful to have some feedback on down votes.  Maybe when you down vote there could be a pop-up that comes up with a text box so you could leave a comment like "this is trolling - stop", "political/religious comment", or "I down voted this it is a repeat thread".  These comments would appear in the users account and not on the thread thereby reducing the amount of "Why did that get a down vote?" comments and similar voting comments that are not germane to the thread topic.

Maybe like a message board that's continous, where we can log on to 11W and can see which other users are online and chatting in some message board about whatever is going on in sports or anything for that matter.  That could cut back on the amount of Threads being started.

under "My Account", "Recent Content", "Tracker", maybe a way to organize the comments and posts by the author or alphabetical order, instead of chronological order. If there's a ton of comments unders somebody's "Tracker", it takes awhile to find one - if it's not recent. It would be easier if you could just sort it by author, instead of by time.

Thanks

Not sure if this has been kicked around yet, but I think it'd be awesome if there was a seach website bar where we could search forum/blog post topics as well as articles written by the staff/skull sessions etc.  I think it would cut down on the massive amount of topics that are created and would make it easier to reference and continue previous discussions....rather than create new ones.

For example, if wanted to find a Monday Skull Session after we Beat Michigan in 2010 you'd just type in Skull Session 11/2X/2010.  Or if someone wanted to rehash....yet again for the millionth time Robert Foster they could search it and pull up the old forum topic and continue it rather than creating a new one.  (Please don't take this as an open invitation to start blabbing about Robert Foster haha)

It gets pretty cumbersome to go back through all the previous pages whether it be forum topics, blog posts or skull sessions/misc articles pages to try and find something from the past.  Just a thought.

Haha, I posted a very similar idea about 4 hours ago which is originally what brought this forum back to being "active". Great minds think alike

There's actually a site search in the resources box on the sidebar. You won't be able search for "Skull Session 11/2X/2010" as you suggest, but it's Google based, so try title or other keywords and it will give you results.

An extra reward system... If someone averages a certain number of helmet stickers per comment (or whatever) they get All B1G Ten status or All American status or something like that. It could limit the amount of comments that are pointless and don't need to be posted. Just throwing the idea out there.

This is a pretty good idea in theory.  But, I just don't see people not posting pointless stuff .  Many might even consider this comment pointless, I have no idea lol.

Actually, maybe we could keep those achievements, but give them out when somebody reaches a certain amount of helmet stickers or upvotes as oppossed to the average per post.

I wonder if the staff could set up a text message system for people who wanted to enter their number...

They could send out a text when someone commits... "Mike Mitchell commits to The Ohio State University... Find out more at www.elevenwarriors.com".

11W STAFF... Could we make this happen?  I believe there are free websites to use.

Is there any way the staff can look into stalker downvotes?  I don't have any personally, but I think it's abuse of the voting system for certain people to get a downvote for every single comment they make, even if it's just "Go Bucks!"

Jason's picture
Jason Staff on 19 Dec 2012 - 5:21pm #

We monitor these pretty closely. Several users have already been hit with penalties ranging from --25 to -100 Helmet Stickers for behavior.

If you ever feel like we're not adressing a situation where a user is downvoting all of the comments/posts of another user for no reason, please feel free to email us.

Uh, I meant to say I've got a friend that was wondering... Not really a friend, just a guy I know.

In reality I think I've down voted someone maybe twice. Just curious since it'd seem a more effective disciplinary tool if it was brought to the offenders' attention

Trolls are a part of the Internet, not going to stop them all. However, we can hunt them down like dogs.

I've always liked winning stuff by participation, like whomever correctly guesses the Buckeyes game score wins 11W swag, etc. Cool 11W stuff to the best/funniest blog post/forum thread/post of the month or week? If that's already been recommended then my bad. Didnt see it.

And yes, more female members would be NICE

Probably need to up the criteria for voting.  50 doesn't seem to be doing it.  Still in favor of the voting system all-in-all though, but if it gets carried away, like it seems to do in some cases, I wouldn't pitch a fit over eliminating it.

I agree with upping the threshold, 50 is too low. But I think 100 is too high. Maybe 75?

Ha!  Yeah, I think 11W put this picture of Urban up Xmas day last year, and I saved it being the nerd that I am.

And whatever the number... I guess we just gotta find the lowest number that makes the trolls realize it's not worth the effort to achieve that number so they can't just go through a post and downvote the entire thread.

A recruit section that would have currently commited prospects as well as previous years, and their ratings from the recruiting services would be pretty sweet. I realize those are pretty easily accessable elsewhere but it would be nice to have on the site.

I respectfully think this is a bit of a waste of time, for the reasons you mentioned. Maybe a current recruiting tracker with updates on the current unsigned commits and recruits would be useful, but a full database isn't really necessary when other sites have done it so well, and comprehensively.

Instead of upvotes for comments, I propose that we change it to an upvote the poster.  Once you vote on the poster it applies to every post they make, it just indicates how you feel about them.  So it would always be up, down, or neutral.  It would also be able to change depending on the ever changing nature of the interwebs.  You may not like one thing they said, but they may be able to redeem themself with future comments and you can change their downvote to an upvote.  The helmet stickers could still be tracked, but now it would just indicate how many people generally like what you have to say, and it would be a much better way of attributing that someone is a good and valuable poster rather than just sheer volume.  Additionally, it would allow someone like me that forgets user names a way of tracking whether or not I like what someone has to say without having to remember everything everyone said and their usernames.  Finally, it would eliminate serial downvoting, when someone says one thing you don't like, and then just downvote every additional comment they make in the thread.

How about you make public, whoever the downvote troll is.  There is someone who goes through posts and justs downvotes everyone.  If its obvious that someone is trollin, post them on a "Wall of Shame".

It would be fun to know how many total upvotes I have issued and how many total down votes I have given out.  If this is something that has been tracked, it would be interesting to me to know.  Maybe providing this information in the same area where you display our helmet sticker amount.

I know awhile back you mentioned adding a database for prospects and stuff. id like to see something like 247sports has with the dropdown for commits, targets , etc. with the ability to see other years. i know there are the commits/offers forums but having a dropdown or similar with targets, offers, commits and the level of interest(ie. cold, med, hot) would be awesome. thanks for always providing great knowledge and insight.
