LSU, Texas A&M To Kick-Off at 6:30 on Thanksgiving Night

Here's something that puts a wrench into the argument of "student-athletes are like regular students." Granted, it's been a few years since I've been in college, but I do recall getting Thanksgiving off.

Texas A&M and LSU footballers won't, though. From the Facebook announcement:

This Just In: the #LSUvsTAMU Thanksgiving game will kick at 6:30 pm onESPN #12thMan

Are Thanksgiving games about to be the new trend? Don't get me wrong, I'll watch, because it will be better than any game involving the Detroit Lions. Yet, I'm not sure how this fits into the overall (proclaimed) goal of college sports.

College students get Christmas Eve, the day after Christmas, New Years Eve and New Years Day off too, yet I have never heard you complain about that...

Most don't have class on Saturdays either.

Fair points, here, Oyster. But there's long-standing tradition with those dates you listed, for better or worse. Thanksgiving is encroaching on brand new territory, though.

How about the ButterBowl, brought to you by Butterball.

Doesn't Texas play every year on thanksgiving?

Yep, at least according to Wikipedia anyway.

Texas is currently scheduled to host a game on Thanksgiving every year, against TCU in even-numbered years and against Texas Tech in odd-numbered years.

We now play The Game the Saturday immediately after Thanksgiving... I'm not sure this is that much worse. Pretty sure those kids will be fired up to be the primetime game everyone in America is watching.

Exactly.  How many other college students are afforded the opportunity to showcase their talents on a national stage for potential employers?  And at no cost to them either. I don't know of any such event that allows accountants, journalists, economists, doctors and the like an audition at a national level.

Also this definitely isn't new, 1aa, 2 & 3 play every year around thanksgiving. I played at Mount Union and never in 5 years playing did I have thanksgiving day off. Had practice every year on that day.

Arkansas not a good enough matchup anymore for LSU.  What's wrong Bert, Karma got your tongue?

I thought that there was already a college Thanksgiving game. Isn't the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving?

Wasn't Nebraska-Colorado on Thanksgiving once upon a time?

6:30 seems a little early...  7:30 would have been perfect imo

6:30 is okay for me.  That is usually about the time I am waking from my first food-induced coma of the day.

I thought A&M disbanded the team after Johnny left.

You're growing on me big-time, DJ, but this is nothing new and just seems to an ax you want to grind. Not only have games been played on Thanksgiving (Texas vs. A&M was a staple for a few years, right?), but also starting at noon on Black Friday. Those kids aren't sitting at home eating turkey on the holiday.

It should be noted that Texas used to play Texas A&M on Thanksgiving every year, since the conference split that tradition died.
