Say what you will about Musberger, but I'm going to miss the big fella on the call during ABC games. From ESPN:

Sports broadcasting legend Brent Musburger will be joined by college football analyst Jesse Palmer in the booth every Saturday on the SEC Network when it launches next fall. The Hall of Fame sportscaster and the former Florida quarterback have each reached an agreement with ESPN to be the lead college football game commentators on the new network. The pair will kick off the season with Texas A&M at South Carolina on the SEC Network Thursday, Aug. 28. [brent and jesse]

“Brent Musburger is a cultural icon who has been guiding fans through many of sport’s most spectacular moments for decades,” said John Wildhack, ESPN Executive Vice President, Programming and Production. “His big-game performance and unmistakable style will elevate our football coverage on the SEC Network. Serving as the definitive play-by-play voice for this major network launch represents an exciting new chapter in his legendary career and reinforces our commitment and investment in the SEC Network.”

Wildhack continued, “Jesse Palmer has quickly established himself as one of college football’s most insightful, entertaining and dedicated analysts. As a former SEC quarterback, he brings the perfect combination of playing experience and deep conference knowledge to the SEC Network. Partnering him with Brent on this new national platform will create a memorable booth for college football fans everywhere.”

At least this will move Jesse Palmer to a TV channel I will refuse to watch.

So who's with Herbie on Gameday?

I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.

Have to imagine it'll be Nessler or maybe McDonough, who seem to be the next men up in the rotation

Damn, really hoping it was Mowins.

I'd like Nessler, but read on tos that Fowler or Rece Davis are the top candidates.

It's going to be Desmond Howard because it's ESPN and that's how they roll.

Please put Spielman in there with Herbie.

I'll miss Musberger doing the Saturday night game. Without him, K.Webb wouldn't have had the career she's had. Let us not forget he also brought fame and recognition to Jenn Sterger and the FSU Cowgirls. Brent is the old perv you always want to hang out with -- he can say what you can only think, and the chicks think he's harmless. And I liked his play-by-play work too.

I'm with ya Cron, Musburger always seemed to take more shit from everyone than anyone since Madden. But I always thought he was a perfect yin to Herbie's yang. So what if he was played the creepy outdated uncle? Haha, they played well together and I'll miss their dynamic, though I know I'm one of very few on this island. That being said, Kirk was always driving that ship so it'll be interesting to see what happens with him.

Just... Go Bucks.

If it's Fowler who replaces Musberger, then Rece Davis becomes the College Gameday host.   If it's Davis, then I assume Fowler stays where he is, but doubtful he'll be happy about that.

I read an SI article a while back that included an interview with Fowler about his career going forward.  He seems pretty intent on being more of a play-by-play guy than host, and I think he'd do a great job in primetime with Herbie.  They obviously already have a good working relationship so it seems like a no-brainer to me that Fowler will take over for Brent.

Maybe they just let Herbie go and bring in Mark May and Lou Holtz, that seems like it would be good!

I won't be too sad, really.  I don't think Musberger could ever go a telecast without mentioning Michigan in some way, particularly in non-B1G games.  Yeah, he gave us holy buckeye, but still, you could tell he wasn't really biased in our favor ever, if you know what I mean.  But hopefully he will continue to show B1G bias down in SEC country enough to where they will accept it subconsciously in a few years.

And the love-fest between Jesse Palmer and the SEC gets more intimate.  In other news, I just saved 15% on my car insurance by switching to Geico...

He will fit right in with the rest of the rambling and incoherent SEC.  Let's face it, Brent's on the very last legs of his career.  If the SEC broadcast arena becomes a place for once-great college football commentators (add in Lundquist and Danielson under this heading), that's no skin off of anyone else's back.  Seems to me the SEC is where you go to play bingo and shuffleboard.

So... and yes, I guess I have been living in a cave, but:

Does this mean Danielson and Lundquist are no longer calling SEC games on CBS, i.e., is CBS shit out of luck with the advent of the SEC network?  Please don't tell me BOTH networks are in bed with the SEC.

cronimi's picture

I don't know the particulars, but I presume that CBS will still keep the Saturday afternoon SEC game, so Big Vern and Gary will still have a job. I think the SEC Network will be similar to BTN in that it doesn't get the marquis matchups, which will stay on CBS. So Brent will go from the likes of OSU-USC to Miss St.-Vandy (or Bama-Chattanooga).

Have to admit I enjoyed Brent Musburger doing the Saturday night games.

I just have a feeling Musberger is on the downhill portion of his career. I don't want to take anything away from him, as he's had quite an illustrious career, but how many more of these can the SEC ANY network take before they have to take action?
