Gonzaga Vaults to #1 Spot in Associated Press Hoops Poll

With the 'Zags taking over #1, Indiana fell to 2nd.

Ohio State used a pair of wins to move up to 14th and three B1G teams are still in the top 10.

Gonzaga becomes the 5th team to be ranked #1 through Week 18. Not since 2003-04 has more than five teams held the top spot to this point in the season.

The 'Zags are also just the third non-BCS team in the history of the AP Poll to be ranked #1 joining Memphis (2007-08) and St. Joseph's (2003-04).

Indiana would shit on Gonzaga

I guess it's fortunate then for Gonzaga that this is a basketball poll and not a restroom stall.

2 teams one spot?

4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

For what its worth Gonzaga has a 2-4 post season record vs. Big Ten teams.
Wins

  • Indiana
  • Minnesota

Loses

  • Ohio State
  • Indiana
  • Michigan State
  • Purdue

Don't worry, a Big Ten team will be their demise again!

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Please let Michigan be in Gonzaga's bracket.  Please, Please, Please, PLEASE!
This is a problem in college sports.  Gonzaga is 2-2 vs Top 25ish competition: Illinois (loss), KSU (win-neutral court), OkSt (win), @Butler (loss).

But unlike football, the tourny fixes all that in the end.

Tournaments actually don't "fix" everything. Teams can get hot and go on winning streaks despite not actually being a better team. The "best" teams don't always make the Final Four or win it all.

But at least you have to actually win games to be the champion, not be voted in by sportwriters.

So much this.  Large tournaments like the big dance provide some of the most excitement in all of sports, but they hardly reward the most consistent and "best" teams throughout the season.  Playoffs can crown a "true" champion, but you've got to cut the field to the best teams and let them fight for ultimate glory.

Yep, we were easily the regular season national champs in 2010-2011.  Too bad there is no such thing.

I'm hoping for the same with OSU. Maybe come in as a #4 and if they can get to the Sweet 16, they'd be staring them down. I'd love OSU's (and any B1G team's) chances in that bracket.

You can talk all about Gonzaga's perceived weak schedule.  They've won a lot of games in a row.  They've avoided the upset bug.  TSUN lost to PSU for goodness sakes.  PSU wouldn't make the WCC any stronger.  Big upsets have been happening, but not to Gonzaga.  They haven't lost since their final seconds boner against Butler that cost them that game.  I'm OK with them being #1 for now because none of this matters come tournament time.

let's see...i have my choice of being in a bracket with IU, Kansas, Miami/Duke, or Gonzaga.  Give me Gonzaga every time.  Maybe the committee could give us that present to make up for the terrible draw we were given as the #1 overall seed (4-seed UK??? come on) a couple years ago.

Let me first say I am in Gonzaga territory and while I like the Zags, I am first a Buckeye.  But I think they deserve #1.  Their only two losses are to 2 teams that beat Indiana (Butler, Illinois).  And the Butler loss was a half court 3 at the buzzer.
This is Gonzaga's best team.  Olynyk is 7' and is described as "talents of a guard".  The 4th best player on the team is John Stockton's son.  I get that they play in the WCC.  They don't have ANY weak areas other than their schedule.  I think you will be surprised come tournament time.
Their transition game, 3 pt shooting and defense is exceptional.  Mark Few is a helluva coach.  Do I think they can win it all? Probably not.  They can get up for big games but I don't know if they can string several ones together into wins.  But right now nobody is playing better ball from tip off to final buzzer.
