OSU Nike Rivalry/Pro-Combat Uniforms Revealed

The uniform the Buckeyes will presumably wear for "The Game" is visible at the top of the official OSU shop home page. In summary: bigger TV numbers, thicker stripe on the helmet, black face-masks, gray outline in the main numbers, truncated pant stripe and modified gray shoulder stripe.

Yea, I like it.  I'll say it again, I'd be happy if we had variations to the uniform happening every season.  They wouldn't always have to be this drastic, other times they could and the theme - SCARLET AND GREY - would never change.

O-H Kee Pa's picture

The silver/gray outline of the numbers is fantastic. Based on the lighting and shot in the picture, it's hard to make out exactly what the shoulder stripes are. If I were to guess, they're giant helmet stripes.

For those who don't want to click:

I really want this as our new uniform.

lljjgg's picture

Does that helmet's finish look matte to people?

SouthBayBuckeye's picture

sort of, which is why i am confused by all the "chrome package" stuff online for sale. I thinkt he idea that someone else metioned of the chrome "etched" buckeye leaves on the matte gray helmet is pretty cool. Would be in like with oregon's duck winged helmets and the chrome trend we've been seeing other places.

I didn't know what truncated meant. Now I do.
Sweet. I think of all the experimental unis they've had, these are by far the best.

Buckeyebrowny919's picture

it actually looks like there is a black stripe at the bottom of each arm sleeve...would go hand in hand with the pant stripe

I'm wondering if the helmet could still be a chrome look one. If you click on th ebanner and go in to nike gear, the "ohio state is faster" t-shirt if part of the "chrome package" of which there are other shirts and a hat...

That was the dumbest thing ever!  How that is "taunting" is a mystery to me.
On a related note, how did the Texas A&M receiver who stood up and screamed every time he made a big catch not get penalized.  You could clearly hear him over the crowd and the announcers.  Not that the Bama crowd was making much noise...

Just say no to italics abuse.

Yeah, I think I remember those.  This guy was really loud, though, and it seemed to be more "posing" than just an emotional reaction to a big play.  Then again, maybe I just see things differently thru my scarlet specs.

I believe, following the game, it was determined that the refs should not have penalized us for making the Block O's. If I recall correctly, the refs didn't know what we were doing or that the gloves made a Block O, they just knew we were gesturing to the crowd for some reason so they threw the flags. The refs should not have penalized us for them, and haven't since.

I believe Texas Tech(?) was penalized for the same thing, which cost them a bowl game win, that same year.

If these are in fact them, they are BY FAR my favorite of our pro combats...  I was not a big fan of the previous 3...

I liked last year's.  Thought they were pretty sleek.

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Tim's picture

Yeah these don't seem way different; I like these the best of any Pro Combats so far too.

Baroclinicity's picture

The key here is the gray on the shoulders.  Finally.  F***.  I hate that our scarlet jerseys do not have that right now.  Won't buy one because of it.

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

741's picture

I don't see gray on the shoulders... (P.S. I've never gotten the outrage over the loss of the gray stripe on the home jersey sleeve. I think repeating the helmet and pants stripe design on the shoulder is the best update they made to the uniform when they did the update several years ago.)

Baroclinicity's picture

I was going by the caption under the headline in the Buckshots.

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

741's picture

My bad. (P.S. I am cool with gray in the shoulders if it's there. Would repeat even more the helmet and pant motif.)

741's picture

I think the fat stripe on the helmet is pretty sweet, and the modification to the pants stripe is OK. Not a big fan of the gray outline around the numbers.
A "big" change I'd like to see is removing player names from the back of the jersey.

I feel like it would reinforce the notion that the program and its 122 years of history is bigger than the players themselves.
We've had a little bit of an issue recently with a certain sense of entitlement amoung certain "elite" players. That's all...
If it's good enough for USC and Notre Dame, maybe it could be good enough here.

cplunk's picture

I despise uniforms without player names on the back. It makes it a pain in the rear every year to learn all the new players.
There's no point to it. If you play like a team, that is obvious. If your players play like individuals, equally obvious. It doesn't really add anything to team unity at all.

buckeyedude's picture

I agree. When I go to a game, it makes it so much easier to heckle a player when they have their name on the back.

The best looking of our pro-combats so far.
I *really* wish we wouldn't wear them for The Game, though. I hate tossing away the tradition of seeing our guys' helmets completely covered with stickers on the last game of the season.
Bring them out for the Big 10 opener or homecoming if we must do it.

Kurt's picture

Agree about the stickers.  Since these unis are sort of a modification of the standard - different than all past pro-combats - I bet there's a good chance they put the stickers on these.

OurHonorDefend09's picture

I think this reason would make them the best. They aren't too different than the currents, but definitely still noticeable. These jerseys with the Buckeye leaves would make them by far the best alternative uniforms for OSU.

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

chromedomebuck's picture

just a wild guess based on the shirts that are already available... The helmets with be chrome and there will be buckeye leaves in a dark grey finish within the chrome or vice versa, helmet will be a dark matte grey and there will be chrome buckeye leaves. (Everyone's helmet will have these leaves because they won't be stickers.) Either way, I'm especially pumped to see it!

onetwentyeight's picture

We look like Cartoon characters or Power Rangers. Why can't they leave it alone, or just restrict it to pure historical throwbacks?
Can you imagine  like 40 years from now when this whole Oregon/Nike inspired uniform abuse fad has passed, and we're back to wearing the same historically AWESOME jerseys we've worn for forever, and you put on a tape of the Rivalry games from this decade to show your grandkids or whatever, and they're just like W T F is that. Who is playing.

Earle's picture

I like the jerseys, largely because they are reminiscent of those worn in the NC year.  I don't think they are cartoonish.  I don't disagree with you on the helmets.  After seeing the full helmet on the T-shirts (if we can trust those images), I am not a fan of the ridiculously wide stripe.
As to Oregon, do they even have team colors anymore?  What are they, silver and black?  If we ever did something like that at OSU, I think I'd lose it.

Just say no to italics abuse.

hodge's picture

I agree, they almost are cartoonish, but I like that over-the-top visual impact.  It's much simpler than the chaos of Oregon's uniforms, which in my mind makes it that much more recognizable and eye-pleasing.  Sure, the stripes are almost comically thick, but at least they now have consistency across the entire uniform--it always drove me nuts that the stripes had differing thicknesses on the helmet, sleeves, and pants.

741's picture

We haven't worn the same jerseys since forever... The uniform has evolved numerous times over the years.
I will not be surprised if this is the debut of a new evolution of the team uniform on a "permanent" basis as opposed to the pattern of one-time wearing of a Nike Pro-Combat "rivalry" uniform (none of which were called "historical throwbacks" by Nike or Ohio State University as I recall).
I recall Urban saying before the season began he did not see a reason to change the uniform too much - "this is Ohio State" - but as I also recall he indicated if any changes were to be made they would need to be approved by former OSU legends (Archie's name was mentioned).

GlueFingers Lavelli's picture

@onetwentyeight   Could not agree more. This is pornographic. I hate selling out tradition to Nike. Phil Knight is making millions defacing tradition, and turning "tough" football players into fashionistas who are just as concerned with which arm to wear one long sleeve on, or how many wristbands he should wear. I know I'll get downvoted for this, but as an assistant HS coach, typically those kids are fundamentlly poor players. Give me 11 tough kids who don't care what they look like, but just want to hit someone.  Maybe it's coincidence that "football fashion" has evolved from the "look at me generation", and that's why tackling is so poor.  I guess where theres money to be made....

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

SPreston2001's picture

Ahh I think these uni's look good. If this is what the players like these days then im all for it. Im not saying we should go all in like Oregon, but simple clean changes like these are a welcomed change once througout the year...

onetwentyeight's picture

I just think they serve no purpose. We say it's because thats what kids these days want b/c of Oregon and (assorted other examples). And we also seem to be saying (after reading this thread) that, "hey! they're not nearly as bad as (insert some other school's uniform abomination)" but that's just such a defeatist attitude to take. It's like we're already reconciled to the notion that Nike is gonna mess with our uniforms no matter what, as if it's an inevitability, and that well at least they look COMPARATIVELY ok. But I just don't understand what we gain from this. No recruit is making the decision on whether to attend OSU or not based on UNIFORMS. You go to OSU b/c it's OSU and b/c we have the best coaches and facilities and track record of NFL sucess and on the field dominance and tradition, etc. Uniforms are gimmicks for smaller schools or nouveau riche Football powers like Oregon. They NEED flashy, ever-changing uniforms to grab attention and stand out. But think about it. Who are they trying to grab recruiting attention FROM? Who are they trying to stand out FROM? The blue blood traditional powers. AKA US. They need those Oregon-style uniforms IN ORDER TO stand out from the OSUs of the world. Why would we jump on this bandwagon again?
The last couple of years I just ignored the once a year 'look-like-a-fool' uniforms. Because whatever. But this is becoming a yearly 'tradtition' and it's beginning to annoy me. When will they stop? I'm not even opposed to tweaking the uniform as a concept. We can do that, but we should make tweaks that are permanent if we do so. Having these one-shot clown uniforms each year in the most important game just ... UGh.

Before I get all the "OFF MY LAWN" jokes, I'm 24. I know how "kids" my generation think. I often personally think Oregon pulls off really cool uniforms (like the stormtrooper one, the chrome helmets, etc), but in context. The context for them is very different from us. We are not Oregon and they are not US. What works great for them shouldn't and doesn't work in our context.

SPreston2001's picture

Its just one game and apparently OSU likes the idea since they keep going along with it. You cant please everybody with change so I guess its normal to hear some overreaction to it. But this year warrants the least amount of complaining considering the uni's arent too far off from the traditional uni's. These uni's are pretty sweet and if we could adopt these as the permanent "The Game" uni's then I wouldnt mind. To each his own I guess...

Looking back on my "Rituals" post from earlier this season... I'm troubled that we may walk into The Game after being 11-0 in the "standard" uniforms, and tempt fate the last game of the year by changing our winning ways. Love the uniforms... not loving the risk factor.

Great find. The items are labeled "Rivalry Legend" and "Rivalry True", which coincides with these being our "rivalry" uniforms as Urban said we would wear "rivalry unforms" at some point this year.

Ohio State has one of the top 5 uni's in college football. Just leave it alone for the love of god. Have the backbone to tell nike NO... and If you don't like it we'll go to adidas or under armor. As for "but the kids love the uniform combinations", it doesn't stop 'Bama or Oklahoma or Texas or USC (none of whom ever where pro combat / alternate BS uniforms) from getting their fare share of 4 and 5 star kids.

Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas have all worn pro combat uniforms.. granted their uniforms seemed to have had a lot less drastic changes than most other teams.

Thankfully, they don't look as hideous as I was expecting. I think I can tolerate those. I don't mind doing this for one game a year, I just freaking wish they'd leave our uniforms alone for the most important game of the season every year. On Uni Watch yesterday, there was a little blurb about a fan who ran into Evan Spencer at an airport, and Spencer said: 1) the helmets will be chrome, and 2) the alumni would never support black unis.

Denny's picture

Chrome helmets make sense with the wide striping. I wouldn't expect helmet stickers on a chrome helmet, either (it'd totally undo the whole notion of a chrome helmet).
Also, chrome looks a lot better under the lights at night, which is too bad if they do go with chrome.

O-H Kee Pa's picture

It would be really cool (as some other people have mentioned) if there was some kind of Buckeye leaf inlay within the chrome. And you're right about the effect of chrome under the lights. Considering the typical weather for The Game, chrome helmets might not look a whole lot different than our normal helmets under cloudy, gray skies.

The hockey team had some pretty slick black alternate uniforms in the late '90s-early 00's.  I had a conversation with the hockey equipment manager a few years back and he flat out told me that the rule directly from Gene Smith was no uniforms where black was the primary color because it "wasn't a school color".

If the helmet is indeed chrome, Don't be shocked if the gray accent stripe around the numbers turns out to be chrome as well. This would tie the helmet into the jerseys.  Just a thought.
