Oregon gave up 34 points at home to a Sun Belt team. I know it was a good Sun Belt team & it was against a lot of back-ups, but still...it's a Sun Belt team. If you give up 34 at home to a Sun Belt -- you're not a top 5 team & your Defense will let you down again at some point during the season.
haha yeah, their "deepest" ever - in the context of Oregon Defenses of the past, apparently...which is not impressive. Pac 10/12 standards for Defense are not high.
true - I watched most of the game...and that Oregon Offense is machine-like. But, still -- 34 at home, to a Sun Belt team....even the back-ups should not let that happen.
maybe not, but when will the second team play. Never, unless the game is in doubt. Now if they start getting injured then maybe you adjust them. But I don't think the final score was all that indicative of the kind of team that Oregon is. Will they win the national championship, probably not, but they looked very good. And I certainly wouldn't dock a team because of their second team (otherwise USC would have to drop off the rankings because they don't even have a second team).
there is a chance of the AP Champion title, right?
I know it may be a long-shot & we'd have to pretty much dominate every team & have some other non-B1G teams slip up along the way...but there's a chance
Is that like the #shocktheworld campaign from last year? Not many with the AP is going to vote tOSU #1 no matter how bad we beat everyone, unless everyone else in the country has 2 losses.
That #shocktheworld crap was so stupid. All teams in front of us would need at least one loss, and we'd of course have to be undefeated and have absolutely destroyed our opposition. I think after the UCF game we'll have a better idea of what this team's capabilities are for this season, and can then better project how this season will play out.
Folks it was pretty much Oregon's 3rd string defense and walk-ons playing when Arkansas State started scoring. It was a 10-2 team's starters going up against 3rd stringers and walk-ons. Plus Gus "Bubbles" Malzahn is an offensive wizard. If Oregon keeps their starters in, considering they pulled them midway through the second quarter, that game could've been 100-10.
The rankings are usually a joke. I still get mad thinking about the #1 OSU versus #2 Michigan game a few years ago and how everyone cried about how there couldn't be a rematch because they just played, Mich had their chance, they couldn't win their conference...blah, blah, blah. And then this past year it's suddenly ok to rematch two teams from the same conference when one already beat the other and one didn't win their conference...blah, blah, blah. I know - SEC bias, but whatever. With that said at least the rankings give us all something to talk about - or complain about in most cases!!!
I won't complain about #14 and being ranked above TSUN. I'd put us over South Carolina and Wisconsin after their thoroughly underwhelming season openers. Especially Wiscy...5 points over Northern Iowa? Really?
YUUUP. MARK IT DOWN BOYS. Other than ^those 4 teams, I saw no teams this weekend that I would worry about us beating. NONE. We're going to cut through the B1G like Sherman marching to the sea. UCF? PLEASE. Isn't that a Big LEast team?
I like the boldness. I do. And I kinda agree as far as your opinion of other teams. But I do not know enough about the Buckeyes yet to personally join in on the boldness. And I still kinda think it's a little early to bring in the final verdict on some of the other BIG teams. But I like your thinking.

Someone explain to me how South Carolina is 9th and how Oklahoma didn't drop more.
...and how Wisconsin is ahead of us, I know they started higher --- but, child please!

Totally agree. This is supposed to be Oregon's "deepest" defense ever...whatever that means.

Oregon was up 50 - 0 with over 7:30 left in the 2ndQ. They pulled the starters out before halftime.

Irrelevant, Oregons 2nd team shouldn't even allow that.

South Carolina is not the 9th best team in the country. Take away Lattimore and you have a passing attack on par with Michigan.

yes, Nappy --- wondering if they weren't an SEC team --- if they'd be ranked anywhere near that high

Couldn't agree more. Vandy had their number until Connor Shaw came back in and just about killed himself to get the win. Not impressive at all.
Couldn't have said it better. Exactly.
Who Cares what we're ranked let's just destroy teams.
Someone explain to me why we are even ranked? What's the purpose of ranking a team with a post season ban?

Alabama, USC, LSU and Oregon would all have to slip up in order for that to happen. It's possible, but no likely.

5 big 10 teams in the top 20 but none in the top ten?

I think #14 is about right for now. Meyer is still working the bugs out of this offense. They better be ready to play this weekend.
By the time we get to MSU, I think this OSU offense, hopefully, will be clicking.
