Excellent move by UWM! I still have respect for Andy and his accomplishments at tOSU. Nice to have another Buckeye in the Brew City. A few cheese weasels are bashing the move in the local paper, but time will tell. UWM needed to make a splash and this is definitely it.
If it weren't for the fact that UWM cancelled their football program, I would say the MAC should be looking at them to replace Temple.
No football, however, is a deal breaker. The MAC needs to start a policy of all sports members only. What's the over/under on how long UMass stays in the league.
I had no idea that Andy Geiger would ever have considered returning to an AD job. I think he is the best AD that OSU has had in my memory; indeed Geiger was, I think, the best AD in the Big Ten during his time in Columbus.
This news caught me by total surprise. To me, Geiger going to UWM is a little bit like Lloyd Carr coming out of retirement to coach Northern Michigan.
He did some interviews when the NCAA stuff was happening last year. He probably realized he missed being in the mix and decided to come out of retirement for a couple of years. The article says his contract is really short, like 2-3 years. I imagine they're paying him really well which if you add to his tOSU retirement package could make for an even comfier retirement. Maybe pay for that addition to his home in Oregon.
But yeah, I agree with you M Man. I wish Andy was twenty years younger and still at Ohio State. Gene Smith can't hold a candle to Geiger's AD skills.
My theory, based purely on my own speculation, is that if Andy Geiger had been the OSU AD these last three years, things would have been very, very different.
