Think a lot of people missing the point on Bielema-Urban. Don't think accusations are about poaching recruits. There's something more to it.
This is what I don't get. What could it be? If it was really "illegal" don't you think Bielema would have gone to the NCAA, not "worked it out on the phone" with Meyer?
Fathead prefaced by saying he didn't want to be like the SEC, so that would imply it's a practice that supposedly happens in the SEC and not an NCAA violation. Allegedly, though, they're trying to say Coach Meyer contacted one of their recruits (Walker Williams - who?) during a dead period.
I'd be pretty surprised if this has legs to it. Meyer certainly knows the recruiting rules & cannot see him committing a blatant violation.
What I can see is Urban being able to use a loophole in something that left a bad taste in BB's mouth even if technically ok. The more I read the more it seems Bielema is complaining about something that shouldn't be allowed but is.
Agreed. I don't believe Urban would have committed any violations. He always seemed very aware of dead periods. I was just sharing that, allegedly, that may be their complaint. However, if they really felt it was an NCAA violation, why would they go to Delaney? *shrug*
I doubt one would ever be made. A verbal agreement is just that - verbal. A kid said he's going to a certain school. Has he signed officially? No. And there undoubtedly would be gray area cases - did he really verbally commit? Is there evidence? Was it a misreport? Too much complication IMHO.
This is what makes me think it's about the number we signed. The Big Ten's rules on class size and recruiting are stricter than the NCAA's. So from Beilema's view, UFM is "breaking" a Big Ten rule, not an NCAA one.
Except that early enrollees can be counted toward the previous year's class, and it isn't irregular for a B1G team to have more than 25 players sign in one class.
Sorry, I mean the total numbers. Beilema was complaining yesterday about how he thinks people should not be able to sign more spots than what they need to reach 85 (or 82 in our case).
Gentleman's agreement? If you love your conference getting buried by the media, and you love your conference losing lots of bowl games and big out-of-conference matchups, then be my guest. We're on a different bus. We're going to represent if they don't want to. Michigan gets it. Wisconsin and MSU can happily battle for 3rd place in this conference while OSU and Michigan continue to distance themselves in terms of recruiting. Not like Wisconsin and MSU are top-tier programs anyway - just a couple of Johnny-Come-Latelys who have had a couple of good years.
You tell them Urban. It is a nice "go f yourself" and also a nice message to send - if they don't pick up their recruiting, then they may never beat us again.
"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."
Not sure if this was mentioned in any of the (many) other related threads, but Germdeman's article posted today at the-ozone, "In the Land of Gentlemen, the Three-Legged Man is King", is well-written, and exposes some of the hypocrisy in this whole thing. A Cliff Note's version:
Coming from the SEC, Meyer must look at some of these Big Ten coaches like they are lazy, spoiled children; a complaint for every situation, and a solution for none.
"Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again"
Am I the only one slightly confused at to what hes saying here? i know hes referring to the coaches but was it just a poorly phrased way of saying theyre going to keep doing exactly what they've been doing?
"Recruiting is recruiting until they sign," Alvarez told Schad. "If we had somebody who changed their mind and came to us, that's OK. Urban [Meyer] was very aggressive but there is no pact within the conference not to continue to recruit. It's open season until they sign." - Barry Alvarez
You know, 20 years ago those gentlemanly agreements within the Big Ten were all fine and dandy because the conference was doing well nationally in the 90s and early 00's. That mind-set has persisted at almost every Big Ten school and look where we are now...behind the innovation curve. If watching the SEC win 6 straight titles wasn't enough to light fire under their asses having Urban come in and run roughshod on them better. I for one, want a competitive conference.

Looks like we have our own "honey badger" in the making! lol
hahahaha thats a pretty big "go f***k yourself"
Every time I don't think I can love him any more, he tops himself--and my mancrush grows accordingly.
urban and elika..my two main crushes right now
I'll raise a glass to each, hear hear!
Sad that so many BIG coaches are so afraid of competition. Get 'em Urban!
In the future this problem won't exist. Kids are just going to commit to OSU first. That will solve everything.
vacuuming sucks
How many shrines of Men do I need in my house before my wife freaks out? There is room next to the Aaron Craft shrine for a UFM shrine.
Hilarious.

My guess is Bielema is complaining about the "over-signing". He thinks Meyer's signing more than he should be able to.

Yep, I hear what you're saying. Maybe they'll go to Delaney to ask for a B1G rule about verbal agreements. Facepalm.

Class of 2010.
We agree, was more stating that in a sarcastic manner. Not a chance. Does make me laugh a little picturing that whining to Delaney though.

Pretty sure this was B-Cast's work at O-zone and CBS just ripped him off. Fornelli could have been present too, though.
Yea. It's sad. They link to another CBS article which links to O-Zone. Total Hose job.

He's saying that the coaches are going to go about recruiting in the same manner. That they will recruit relentlessly.

BB rewriting his own history:
"Bielema did not address specifics, but on Friday said he was not alleging NCAA rules violations were committed within the Big Ten."
Uhh... someone got put in the corner for a timeout!
