If you'd like a look at some of the work going on inside the stadium over the summer, you might find this link to be very interesting:
I park by the stadium for work, and one day I saw the old turf rolled up on the South side of the Shoe. It's amazingly soft stuff, not like the old school turf that would light you up if you slid on it. The practice field adjacent to the stadium uses the same stuff, and while it has a very realistic feel, it gets hot as hell if you're standing on it in the summer. I'm curious as to the consistency of the turf once it is wet. Does the field get waterlogged? Is it extremely slippery?
Here's a really neat time lapse of the install. It is sometimes mind boggling that we go to such lengths to create these field masterpieces and that there are entire companies out there who specialize in such a thing. Through trial and error they have built an ingenious method of replicating a grass field as best as possible.
250 word limit. Huh... Back in my day, when we stormed the field after the 98 TTUN win, I remember the turf being torn up and thrown around. My roommate and I lovingly took a square foot home with us, put it in a pot, watered it and gave it care. It didn't last very long... I couldn't even maintain grass at that point in my life. :)
