These stats are for B1G play only.

Key:

  1. Pace (possessions per game)
  2. Off (offensive efficiency, this is points per possession)
  3. Def (defensive efficiency, this is points allowed per possession on defense)
  4. Margin (off-def)

pace off def margin
Iowa 67.4 1.16 1.01 0.146
Michigan State 64.4 1.14 1.02 0.123
Wisconsin 61.9 1.16 1.05 0.104
Michigan 60.3 1.18 1.09 0.094
Ohio State 64.0 1.05 0.99 0.053
Indiana 63.6 1.00 1.03 -0.028
Minnesota 63.9 1.06 1.10 -0.038
Nebraska 63.0 1.00 1.04 -0.038
Purdue 66.7 1.02 1.08 -0.057
Penn State 64.4 1.02 1.11 -0.083
Illinois 62.8 0.96 1.06 -0.093
Northwestern 61.0 0.90 1.05 -0.149

Iowa really must be kicking themselves about letting that home game versus Michigan State slip away.  They are one game back of co-leaders Michigan and Michigan State who will play Sunday for sole possession of first place in the conference.  Remaining games for the three at the top:

  • MSU has at Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and at Ohio State
  • Michigan has MSU, at Purdue, Minnesota, at Illinois, and Indiana
  • Iowa has Wisconsin, at Minnesota, Purdue, at MSU, Illinois and at Indiana.

That's a really tough closing stretch for MSU who only sees one game left with a team that has a negative efficiency margin, while Michigan only has one game left with a team that has a positive efficiency margin.  If Iowa wants a share of the title, they are probably going to have to win out and hope for an MSU win Sunday.

Key

  1. Def (defensive efficiency, this is points allowed per possession on defense)
  2. 2pt% (percentage of 2pt shots made)
  3. 3pt% (percentage of 3pt shots made)
  4. 3pa/fga (percentage of shot that are attempted from 3pt land)
  5. Efg% (effective field goal percentage: (FG + 0.5 * 3P) / FGA)
  6. Ftm/fga (made free throws divided by field goal attempts, a measure of how large a part of offense or defense free throws are)
  7. Tov% (turnover percentage, TOV / (FGA + 0.44 * FTA + TOV))
  8. Drb% (defensive rebounding percentage, DRB / (Opp ORB + DRB))
  9. Off (offensive efficiency, this is points per possession)
  10. Orb% (offensive rebound percentage, ORB / (ORB + Opp DRB))

Defense

Penn State 1.11 0.43 0.37 0.36 0.47 0.39 0.15 0.66

Ohio State is the top defense in the B1G right now, and Michigan is almost last, and the only meaningful difference between them is the ability to force turnovers.

Northwestern 0.90 0.45 0.28 0.41 0.44 0.20 0.16 0.19

Offensively Michigan is still the class of the B1G, and it's still because they shoot the basketball better than everybody else.  Michigan State has been something of a roller coaster lately with 1.3 points per possession against Penn State, 0.9 against Wisconsin, 1.4 against Northwestern, 0.9 against Nebraska and 1.5 against Purdue.

Thanks for this. Really reinforces that we are a defense driven team. If we could just become a consistent scoring threat, with our defense we could really go far in the tournament

I'm guessin' you meant to say "with OUR defense" and not without defense.

Haha good catch, autocorrect fail. I fixed it. Without defense we will go absolutely nowhere
