After watching today i realized how valuable he really is. the thing that was missing in that puntfest of a 3rd quarter was the ability to run downhill and hit cal in the mouth. i just wanted to see dunn put in to run straight up the middle a few times just to make them respect it. we gave them no reason to defend the inside run so they took away the edges and..well it was just horrific to watch. hall is definetly nice to have back but running between the tackles is not his thing. in the future if we rely on just getting to the edge all day against good defenses (sparty) we wont put many points on the board.

I agree. Could've ram Boren as well. This staff isn't in love with having a lot of RB's carry the ball I guess.

I'm not really sure what we were trying to do offensively in the 3rd quarter. I'm gonna rewatch the game tomorrow and try to see what the deal was. I do know that Cal did a great job making adjustments on D in the 2nd half.

all i know is over and over again we kept getting into 3rd and 9+..which is guna kill this offense..i understand keeping the defense off balance..but on either first or second down you need to have the ability to move the other team out of the way and get 4 yards so on 3rd braxtons ability to scramble has to be defended, opening up passing lanes.one of the biggest tools this offense has is that ability to get outside for a big run, but that will never happen if you cant beat them up on the inside consistently. i just dont think hall can be the every down back at all.

Well i like college and i like football...and im gunna keep doin em both cause they make me feel good!!!

True about 3rd and 9. When this offense is clicking you see a lot of 2nd and 4.

I liked what I saw from Hall today. What am I missing?

scottynoshotty's picture

your missing the fact that braxton made a lot of his yards happen with good pitches on the option

Ok? And? That's the purpose of those plays. Hall still executed them well...

Hall had a couple nice runs between the tackle as well. You certainly can't knock a guy who's averaging over 5 ypc. He was doing just fine prior to those outside option plays as well. He had a couple stumbles and a couple cuts that were anything but sharp...but I expect him to shore that kind of stuff up and be pretty formidable once he gets back into the swing of things. Having Hyde and Hall will be a really nice option to have though.

Remember when some people thought Hall was simply a tag along to get Pryor?  I am with you.  I think he looked good today considering he just came back from injury.

Hall started slow but ended up with 80 plus yards on 15 carries. That's a good day.  The 46 defense plugs the middle.  I think Hall was rusty ESP. At first, but at least he has lateral speed for the option.

You win with people.

I don't think we've really shown much of an ability to run down hill yet.  Not saying that Hyde isn't better b/w the tackles than Hall, but far from anything to rely on.   I know it's a growing process, and coaches know better than me, but I'm far from sold on this Power Spread.  Maybe some who know more about it can help me out, but has it worked well anywhere.   I know florida when tebow was there, but it seems to be an entirely different animal when the "power" is coming from the QB.
And this is an aside (and probably blasphemous) but what was up with Spielman today?  Was he hitting for a raise or something with all the overcritical comments on the Bucks?  I expect that from Herbie but Spielman always seemed like a straight shooter.

Bolt's picture

All I know is that even on a bad day in the "power spread" (or whatever you really wanna call it) it's better than anything we've put on the field offensively in recent memory (only exception being '06 with Troy and a stable of future NFL receivers...from which we also ran a spread at least half the time).

^ he was just saying what all us buckeyes watching at home were saying, sounded pretty spot on

I hate Spielman as an announcer. But would really like to see him coach at OSU.

William's picture

Spielman is a proven terrible coach. The Columbus arena team was terrible with him as HC.

schooey's picture

OH, I did not know about that.  I was thinking Linebacker coach.

i always thought he'd be a great linebackers coach too

Did anyone else notice that Jordan Hall didn't catch the ball once! I thought he was our flex player.

Maceyko's picture

I think they kept things fairly simple for Hall.  In his first game back wouldn't you?  I also think it was pretty obvious that they didn't want Braxton running and it showed.  How many times could he have taken off and chose not to?  Did we miss Hyde?  Yes!  Offensively we put up 35 points and we're still finding all of these faults?  C'mon guys that's pretty exciting when you think about it.  I agree with the defensive issues/concerns, but sometimes you gotta give the other team credit and they made us pay several times on our blitzes.  Not a pretty game and the defense better show more than that, but based on the way the other Big Ten teams are looking I think we are going to be just fine.  If I recall the 2002 team didn't always look so good either...

brbrbuckeye's picture

The 2002 team was terrible offensively and even terrible defensively at times. Somehow we were good at disguising our weaknesses and played hard at all times. And there was great leadership. I am proud of that team but you are right, they were far from perfect they just keep winning.

GO BUCKS!!! URBAN RENEWAL!

You know what we haven't seen at Ohio State in a while is an RB who can shake a tackle. Herron did it occasionally. Beanie made his living off of yards after contact. But Jordan Hall has never been that guy. He's good at finding a seam and shooting thru it but once he's been tapped he drops to the ground.
That's what I've been hoping Hyde (or Rod Smith) would develop into. So far hasn't happened.
Now I'm hoping that Bri'onte Dunn might develop into role.

Buckeyejason's picture

Dunn will make a killing at yards after contact. Even showed a little of that with the few carries he's received this season.

BUCKEYES BABY!

cinserious's picture

Yep, Hyde has the speed and explosiveness but not the YAC. We still dont know if Dunn has it yet like Beanie, but I would've given him at least a shot in the Cal game. Boom had heart for his size but had no vision, and no BRKtackle ability. And really no speed. In all honesty, theres no reaason for Carlos Hyde not to excell with his size and speed, he even has better vision than Boom. Time for him to wake up and become the man or else Dunn will take on that role.

Life's daily struggle is choosing between saying F--ck-it, or soldiering on with your responsibilities.

Buckeyejason's picture

I disagree, Boom had to have vision at least if he had no speed, size, or tackle breaking ability..otherwise he would have never seen the field. I think the one good thing he had was vision..and ran extremely hard!

BUCKEYES BABY!

Even with Hall looking better with more of the rust knocked off against UAB, I am happy Hyde will be back going into East Lansing.
