To Hate or Not to Hate

So I'm reading all about the B1G media days and all of a sudden I get that familiar twinge when I read about our rivals.  The article mentions how Hoke is facing a make or break season because he's underperformed over the last two years.  Ok... is that supposed to make me happy?  Should I be upset about it?  What's the proper protocol here people?

This topic has been endlessly debated on message boards and forums across this great state of ours, but have we reached a consensus?  I'm good with whatever, just tell me.  I mean, on the one hand, I want them to lose and be humiliated, but on the other, I get why it's good for Ohio State when our rivals are a national power.

I am a lot like many of you.  I have a close coworker who is crazy for that school up north.  The arrogance is there, festering just below the surface.  I see it at the slightest sign of hope (Oh... oh... Jabrill Peppers!)  The last thing I want is for their team to be undefeated going into The Game.  Hoke is an annoyance right now too.  Can you fathom what it'd be like if he was experiencing success?  Ugh, makes me quiver just thinking about it.

On the other side of the equation, is my painful SEC bruise that's yet to heal.  Imagine a scenario where our rival is undefeated until Braxton goes all video game on them.  Imagine that season ending with a fantastic beatdown of an SEC power.  Vindication!  That's a dream right there, my friends.  Beating an SEC school to win the title would be amazing, don't get me wrong, but first pummeling an undefeated rival in the Game of the Century(TM) would be on par with meeting a naked Carrie Underwood at the pearly gates, am I wrong?  Am I wrong?

So just to summarize... if they win it's good, if they lose, it's good.

...and my head has exploded.

I will always hate That Team UP North!! The only time I will ever cheer for them is when they are playing an SEC team in a bowl game!!

I would prefer to meet a naked Carrie Underwood a few times while I am still breathing.  If that gives me a heart attack, I'd die one happy man.

I was sorry to see Rich go for selfish reasons, I will miss Brady as well.  Its nice to see them have Issues with beating us!!

Hhmmm.  I hate them enough that not even watching their failure makes me happy.  It may give me a smirk but nothing about Michigan could ever give me joy.

That is, of course, except this:

I don't buy the argument that it's important to Ohio State for Michigan to be a top-program.

If you look at some of the best all-time cfb dynasties, few of them appeared to need a top-notch rival to help fuel their successes. For example:

  • USC under Pete Carroll: UCLA was mostly bad and the Pac 10 was mostly down overall
  • Between 1960 - and 1981, during one of the golden ages of Alabama football, Bama beat Auburn something like 18 wins to 4 losses.
  • FSU in the early days of the ACC had very little competition in-conference, although they did play Miami annually.
  • Nebraska had that great run in 1994, 1995, 1996 during a period when Oklahoma was in a program low point.
  • During Oklahoma's amazing run 1953 - 1957, Nebraska was a middling program.

Perhaps we tend to remember the Ten Year War in the 1970s, and the 15-year war in the 80s/90s between FSU and Miami, and wrongly extrapolate that dominant programs need to have a dominant rival. Yet that almost seems like an exception to the rule.

Totally agree and good points.

We do not need TTUN and/or anybody specifically to be good.  We just need a couple of legitimate teams to be solid for the media to use a measuring stick/barometer for how powerful we (or anybody) are.  Any two or three of Sparty, Wisco, Nebraska, PSU, Iowa just need to pull their weight as respectable programs and then an up and comer plucky team has to be decent (like NU or Purdue or whomever else in the B1G).  Our rival doesnt have to be very good or even good...we just need some big games against established teams (with OOC wins) for the talking head to form their self perpetuating media hype and rankings to boost us into the new playoffs.

There was a time where I hated M...igan more than I loved the Buckeyes.

Times have changed.

One day they will return to a higher standard on the field, and I'm fine with that. For a kid born at the dawn of the Ten Year War that seems right to me.

I'll focus on the good guys, with deserved attention towards the counterparts come late November.

I don't think Michigan HAS to be good, but I WANT them to be good. The rivalry is better when both teams are good. If Michigan sucks this year, then I think there is a very real chance that Les Miles comes back and if that happens, he'll already have all his in roads to SEC territory still (like Urban) and if he brought that LSU staff, Chavis and Cam especially, then that would be a hell of a brewing rivalry.

However, if Miles walks, then I think LSU would hire Chavis as the HC and who knows how much of the staff would stay with him.

I love to watch Miles interviews, and he is a good coach, but I would be much more concerned if Harbaugh came back, than if Miles was given the job.  Think about it, he was given the keys to a Ferrari at LSU by Saban.  All he had to do was maintain it, and give him credit, he did just that.  Miles did see some success at Okie State, but I think Gundy has taken that program further than Miles ever had it.  The situation at Michigan isn't nearly as good as LSU was, and given what Harbaugh was able to do at Stanford, I would be much more concerned if he were to take the job.

Gametime's picture

I'm with you on that man. I just don't think Harbaugh leaves San Fran when he just played for a SB and has one of the best teams in the NFL. That would be a dream scenario for Michigan assuming he can put a staff together as good as the ones he has had for the 49ers and the Cardinal.

You bring up great points about Miles at OKST, but now Miles is a NC winning coach with an established rapport w/ high school coaches throughout the SEC imprints (Florida, Louisiana, Texas, etc.) plus he's charismatic, eccentric, and all that jazz. I think it's more feasible for Les Miles to come in and just be flat out better than Brady Hoke (even though I guess that's not saying too much nowadays).

And I agree 100% on everything here.  It would be an absolute dream scenario for UM if Harbaugh were to come.  So many things would have to fall into place, plus, even if he leaves San Fran, what's to say he would even consider leaving the NFL.  There will be teams lining up to throw a ton of cash at him to stay in the NFL.

Les Miles is awesome, second to only Bobby Knight in terms of press conferences (have you seen the Thanksgiving Dinner one?  if not it's a must watch).  He would be a serious upgrade over RR and Hoke, no doubt about that (but so would you or I).  I don't know, at this time, I just don't feel him being as big of a threat to Meyer at OSU.  I guess my thinking is, he deserves all the credit for maintaining an elite program at LSU, and winning a NC there, after Saban left.  But that was 7 years ago, and Saban has what, 3 more since?  They still compete, but Auburn has been to 2 NCs, winning one, and Bama has obviously done their thing (including shutting LSU out in a NC).  Maybe since they've been almost a third wheel in their own division since last winning, it's an out of sight out of mind kind of thing.  You look at the talent that team is consistently putting into the NFL (I think their entire 2 deep on defense was drafted 2 years ago), and it can be argued they are an underachieving team.

I think Miles would restore UMs name, especially on a National level, which helps the B1G, including OSU when it comes to the playoff, but I'd still feel good about our chances with Meyer running the show heading into the Game.

I want Michigan and every other B1G program to be just good enough that, when we beat them, it is a quality win, but not so good that any of them could possibly beat us.

Because of the 90s, I used to want TTUN to be really good and/or undefeated when we play them so we could return the favor from those years were we were stacked and they ruined our dreams...but then the Sweater Vest happened and beat them into submission.  Then we saw the hiring of Hoke and suddenly they got all cocky and got the cart before the horse.  It was at that point that I realized, that I hope TTUN loses every single game.  I hope PSU and Sparty become our best intra-division games and we all laugh at TTUN as they become reduced to speaking only about academics and that they think their farts dont stink (or whatever holier than thou, everybody else cheats, type crap they tell themselves).  TTUN's only hope gets reduced to their little brown jug game with Minnesota.

Thats my $0.02.

Wolverweasels don't make tOSU great.  tOSU makes tOSU great.  tOSU won a2National Championships in the 50's.  The weasels generally were a .500 team then going 52-36-3.  tOSU won 3 NCs in the 10 years from 1961 to 1970.  The weasels were a .600 team with 1 Big Ten Championship in that era and 1 co-championship with tOSU that came with an 20-9 asskicking by the Buckeyes.  Screw the weasels.  tOSU doesn't need them.  If PSU, MSU, Neb, Wisc can pull their weight, I'm quite happy to have the weasel narrative follow the one Minnesota followed.  A former national power now so perenially beaten down, that the average masses forget what a power they used to be.

I have a fantasy that they're beaten down so much, they join the Ivy League and drop scholarship athletics.  It always makes me feel good. ;)

I'm with you until you get to that last part. I'd prefer that Michigan - as a self-anointed member of the "Public Ivy" league - remain in the Big Ten as the conference's token exemplar of the traditional 19th century amateurism. Their "fans" can constantly complain that "our academic standards are too high to compete with those damn football factories!"

Then, one day, they beg to join the Ivy League, by the athletic boss of that conference denies their request, saying, "Well, Michigan would have been a decent, if somewhat substandard academic fit for our conference, but we need to add football programs that turn on t.v. sets in big urban markets."

Exactly how my dad feels, except that if you cancel the program then you can't beat them again.

I'm not that severe, but the answer is still HATE.  ALWAYS HATE.

I hate Michigan as much as the next Buckeye, but I would like to see Hoke stick around for a few more years of mediocrity.  I enjoyed the RichRod years.  Seeing those Buckeye fans hold that banner up at The Game in *ichigan stadium with the "We love RichRod" sign was priceless.
