Top 5 College Coaches that belonged in the NFL

The NFL is known for college coaches that were bad NFL coaches, but what about the other way around? Some aren't familiar with the idea, but these people exist. Let's get with the countdown, and if there are any I missed, let me know in the comments. Okay, here we go:

5. Bill Callahan - Nebraska

Bill Callahan was a terrible hire by Nebraska followed by a terrible firing of FRUG Solich, which ultimately set back Nebraska miles and they're still recovering. Bill Callahan is low on my list because he wasn't a great NFL coach to begin with. Let's look at the records and they speak for themselves:

OAKLAND RAIDERS

2002: 11-5, lost Super Bowl

2003: 4-12, missed playoffs

NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS

2004: 5-6 (3-5), missed bowl game

2005: 8-4 (4-4), won Alamo Bowl

2006: 9-5 (6-2), lost Cotton Bowl

2007: 5-7 (2-6), missed bowl game

The first thing you notice off the bat is that his first season as a head coach, he reached the Super Bowl. This had mostly to do with it being Jon Gruden's team that he had already developed prior and just simply having Rich Gannon at quarterback. 2003 was a disaster as Callahan was accused of throwing games and was fired. Ironically, Callahan is the last Raider HC to ever have a winning record.

The Nebraska days were up and down, but mostly down. He had two bowl games during his tenure, but the abysmal in-conference record almost speaks for itself. The 2007 season had a hilarious preseason and never seemed to go right and it ended with a bad loss to the Colorado Buffalos which caused Callahan's firing.

Nowadays, Callahan is the OC for the Dallas Cowboys, which actually explains a lot if you think about it. Moving on...

4. Bruce Arians - Temple

Most people forget that Bruce Arians was once the HC of the Temple Owls. Most people also forget that Bruce Arians was the OC for the Browns the last time they made the playoffs. Small world.

Bruce Arians' college record at Temple is abysmal by many means. 21-45 was the combined record of Arians' teams at Temple, and that does not include the scandal-ridden 1986 season where they had to forfeit 6 wins due to having an ineligible player on their roster. Temple never qualified for a bowl under Arians. (Keep in mind, he coached there between 1983 and 1988)

In the NFL, a lot remains to be seen as a head coach. In less than one full season, Arians guided Indianapolis to the playoffs last year and will now be taking over in the desert for the Cardinals, who have much more issues than the Colts did. This one's a wait-and-see, but considering Arians won more games in 12 games at Indy than he did in a season at Temple, he gets a spot ahead of Callahan. Speaking of seasons...

3. Charlie Weis - Notre Dame, Kansas

Charlie Weis belongs in the NFL, he just doesn't know it.

While Weis has never been a head coach in the NFL, he insists on taking college HC jobs. After being a highly touted Bill Belichik assistant (red flag #1), he was brought up in HC searches because of his "decided schematic advantage." The first job he took was the Notre Dame job, which started off smoothly before a 3-9 crotch shot that he still managed to survive through, but it didn't get much better as back-to-back 6-loss seasons guided him out the door. He had an overall record of 35-27 at Notre Dame.

Following his firing, he went BACK to the NFL, where he became the OC for the Chiefs and guided them to the playoffs. Shortly afterwards, Weis left for the Florida OC job, where the Gators went 6-6 and Weis then left because Kansas somehow thought he was the best option they had.

1-11 folks, and he's still employed! Charlie, do everyone a favor and stay in the NFL. Please.

Our next guy also belongs as an offensive coordinator...

2. Jim Caldwell - Wake Forest

Jim Caldwell had exciting offenses at Wake Forest! They set numerous school passing records (which have since been broken) and were exciting! Sports! Unfortunately, Caldwell's Demon Deacons couldn't run the ball nor play good defense. Dear Old Wake Forest was not sad to let him go and he has never been seen in Winston-Salem since.

Caldwell had a career record of 26-63 (12-52 ACC) in Winston-Salem and was 1-0 in the postseason (a win in the Aloha Bowl)

His NFL record is highly questionable, too. He had two good first seasons as an HC, but that was because of Peyton Manning. His year without Manning was a disaster as he went 2-14 and was promptly fired.

This past season, Caldwell was promoted to OC for the Ravens and got his second ring. HIS SECOND RING. You know who else has two Super Bowl rings? Our top spot.

1. Bill Parcells - Air Force

The Tuna isn't known for staying at one place for too long, in fact, there was one brief stint at the beginning of his coaching career that I'm sure he would like to forget: a 3-8 season in Colorado Springs in 1978.

Some argue that Parcells is one of the greatest coaches of all-time and has compiled an overall record of 172-130-1 in New York (both Giants and Jets), New England, and Dallas. He won two Super Bowls with the Giants.

But that season with the Falcons? Yikes. He should be glad most people don't remember it.

HONORABLE MENTION

Jon Embree - Colorado

Walked into an awful mess left by Dan Hawkins and was fired two years later, sparking an ethnical controversy.

The Big Sixteen?

I have a crazy idea that most would buy into. The Big Ten becoming a Superconference! If Maryland and Rutgers are added, things could get interesting...

Maryland and Rutgers will join the Big Ten

Virginia Tech will want to become a Big Ten team.

Jim Delaney will laugh at VT and take their rival UVA instead. UVA is a much more prestigious, public academic institution (The Harvard of the South) and would automatically have a rivalry with Michigan to go with their rivalry with Maryland.

It wouldn't make sense to grab any more ACC or Big East teams, Missouri, Iowa State, or anyone else from the Big 12/SEC, so there leaves one option: Notre Dame

Jim Delaney meets with Jack Swarbrick and convinces him that the ACC is going to collapse within the next 5 years and tells him this:

"Come with me to the Big Ten, and together, WE WILL RULE THE WORLD!!! AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!"

Swarbrick has previously stated that the ND athletic department is very interested in joining the Big Ten if offered, but Delaney has never offered since '91.

ND joins the B1G and forms the first superconference. Here are the proposed divisions:

East Coast division (the one with non-midwest teams)

Penn State

Maryland
Rutgers

Virginia

Central division (the one with Ohio State and Michigan)

Ohio State

Michigan

Michigan State

Indiana

Chicago divison (the one that has Notre Dame)

Notre Dame

Illinois

Purdue

Northwestern

Corn Division (the one that has Nebraska and Iowa)

Nebraska

Wisconsin

Minnesota

Iowa

THE BIG TEN SHALL RULE THE WORLD!!!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA

#3 Oregon and #7 Stanford play Saturday in Eugene, OR.

2 MAC teams made the list!

Notre Dame and Florida have played tough schedules. The Gators play a weak FCS team on Saturday and the Irish play Wake Forest.

Ohio is only ranked #5 in the MAC due to this system, in case you were wondering where they were.

Florida has beaten the fabled Johnny Football in case you wonder why they're so high, but that is about 1/10th the reason why they're #2.

Okay everyone, share comments and thoughts below. Be constructive in your criticism.

SMART Football Power Rankings

Introducing, the SMART Football Power Ranking!

Since polls don't accurately measure how good a team is or performs, I made a ranking system based on performance. Here is the scoring system:

24 Points for a win over a BCS school

20 Points for a win over a Non AQ 1-A School

16 Points for a win over a 1-AA Team

12 Points for a win over a D-II Team

8 Points for a win over a D-III Team

4 Points for a win over a NAIA Team

2 Points for each win the opponent has

1 point for each win a D-II or lower opponent has

I pointed out the D-II and lower points because some 1-A teams play D-II teams or lower.

Without further ado, here are my rankings. The +/- is for AP ranking with point average in parenthesis.

The teams following are the 35 teams that received the most votes in the latest AP poll.

1. Florida (32) +1

Most underrated: Penn State (+12)

Most overrated: South Carolina (-17)

________________________________________

SEC has most Top 5, Top 15, Top 20, and Top 25 teams still in this system.

Pac-12 has most Top 10 teams, though.

______________________________________________

1. Florida has played a very frontloaded schedule. They have two FCS games down the road that will hurt their final ranking. They have the best win so far of any Top 25 team in this system so far.

2. Notre Dame has no great wins, but they also have no bad wins, which can't hurt their ranking.

3. Oregon State still has to play a FCS game, but was leapfrogged with impressive wins over UCLA and Wisconsin.

4. Alabama's best win is against an SEC cellar-dweller known as Ole Miss. They play Mississippi State this weekend which would average in a 38 point boost for the winning side.

5. Kansas State has great wins, but played a bad FCS team and that brought down its ranking.

6. While the Buckeyes wins don't look impressive, UCF has turned out to be a great last-minute replacement on the rating scale.

7. Oregon may have impressive numbers, but it really comes down to who you play, and Oregon has played really bad teams with their most impressive win being against Arizona.

8. Rutgers seems high, but it's no error. The Scarlet Knights have no losses and that won't hurt a team in the final rankings, unless you're Ohio and have a schedule 0/1-win FCS cupcakes.

9. Texas Tech's loss to Oklahoma doesn't look good, but their wins over WVU and TCU look better.

10. Stanford's win over Dule is looking better by the week. The loss to Washington, however, isn't.

11. LSU has beaten a team in South Carolina with a lot of wins and another team in Texas A&M with even more wins, but those FCS cupcakes are the equivalent to pulling a Plaxico Burress.

12. Remember when Big Game Bob couldn't win the big game? He has wins over Texas and Texas Tech and has plenty of games left to play including Notre Dame.

13. Mississippi State has more cupcake wins than Rutgers, causing them to fall lower than predicted.

14. Louisville is also a victim of the schedule bug. North Carolina win looks good, though.

15. See #11. Two FCS games will hurt any team, no matter how impressive a win against Clemson looks.

16. And then there's Clemson.

17. Hawai'i win and Stanford loss are looking really bad for SC.

18. WVU comes out higher than the AP poll, but they were blasted too far back in my opinion. One thing that helps WVU is their win over JMU. JMU may be a FCS team, but they have won a lot of games, which is equal to a win over Kansas.

19. Penn State beat Northwestern and would be #9 right now if they didn't lose to UVA. #3 (gasp) if they beat Ohio.

20. Georgia and South Carolina have no good wins, and that hurts every time when you have multiple losses.

21. Remember how bad the MAC is? They have two ranked teams, which is the same as the ACC has.

22. The B1G has 3 ranked teams, but two fringe teams in Wisconsin and Nebraska.

Okay guys, let's hear what you think about this system.

*- Oklahoma wins tiebreaker over Mississippi State due to more impressive victory (Texas Tech) than MSU (Tennessee)

**- Penn State wins tiebreaker over Georgia due to more impressive victory (Northwestern) than UGA (Tennessee/Vanderbilt)

***- Unfortunately, Michigan wins tiebreaker over Ohio due to performance against a common opponent (UMass)

****- Toledo wins tiebreaker over Wisconsin due to more impressive victory (Cincinnati) than Wisconsin (Minnesota)

*****- Nebraska wins tiebreaker over Texas due to more impressive victory (Wisconsin) than Texas (Ole Miss/Oklahoma State)

******- North Carolina State wins tiebreaker due to more impressive victory (Florida State) than Louisiana Tech (Illinois/UVA)

*******- UCLA wins tiebreaker over Arizona due to standing in Pac-12 South

The 1st Annual Jim Bollman Anti-Coach of the Year Award nominees

Okay, this sounds like a silly topic but bear with me because it is.

While seeing coaches like Bill Snyder and Bill O'Brien turn teams around that did not look very good, one would think that they would win the coveted Coach of the Year Award. However, the coaches who receive high praise and become greatly disappointed do not receive the recognition for how bad their job at coaching was. This got me to thinking that there should be an award for those coaches. This award was inspired by the Fulmer Cup, which was indirectly awarded to the teams with the most negative activity off the gridiron. The award was not named after a head coach, but appropriately after our FAVORITE Assistant Coach All-Time, the Walrus himself, Jim Bollman!

There will be one winner from each conference and each winner will go against each other to determine the recipient.

With that, here are the nominees in the BCS Conferences:

(List subject to change)

ACC:

Frank Beamer (VT, Record: 4-4. Preseason ACC Coastal Favorites)

Paul Johnson (GT, Record: 3-4. ACC Coastal Preseason Dark Horse)

Mike London (UVA, Record: 2-6. Won 8 games last year. Last place in whole ACC)

Big East

Doug Marrone (SYR, Record: 3-4. Had high expectations and includes loss to Minnesota. Keep in mind Marqueis Gray was injured during this game, and Minnesota is a bigger trainwreck without him.)

Paul Chryst (PITT, Record: 3-4. Lost to Youngstown State but beat ACC JBACOTY Nominee Frank Beamer's VT Hokies)

Skip Holtz (USF, Record: 2-5. Worst record in Big East. Son of Dr. Lou.)

Big 12:

Mack Brown (UT, Record: 4-2. Got blown out by Oklahoma. Pulls in top recruiting classes yearly.)

Charlie Weis (KU, Record: 1-6. Worst record in Big 12. Has a decided schematic advantage.)

Art Broyles (BU, Record: 3-2. Will probably not win the award due to RGIII's loss hurting his team's performance.)

Big Ten*:

Mark Dantonio (MSU, Record: 4-4. One of the top B1G teams in the preseason.)

Brady Hoke (UM, Record: 5-2. Record is deceiving. Much more difficult games coming up down the stretch. Ranked in preseason top 10. Preseason B1G Champs.)

Danny Hope (PU, Record: 3-4. Coming into B1G play, was favorite to represent Leaders division in Indy. Still getting used to it, I guess.)

Pac-12:

Mike Leach (WSU, Record: 2-5. Called entire senior class lazy. Lost to currently 1-win Colorado.)

Jeff Tedford (CAL, Record: 3-5. Blown out in The Big Game, has top WR prospect.)

Kyle Wittingham (UTAH, Record: 2-4. Lost to Utah State.)

SEC:

Gene Chizik (AUB, Record: 1-6. Lost to Arkansas)

John L. Smith (ARK, Record: 3-4. Has Jim Heacock, but lost to ULM, blown out by Alabama. Preseason Top 10. Smiles when losing.)

Gary Pinkel (MIZZ, Record: 3-4. Lost to Vanderbilt and was blown out at home vs Alabama and Georgia.)

Again, the names will flip around weekly, but the favorite is listed at the top of each conference, so let's hear who your favorites are.

*- Kirk Ferentz is permanently ineligible for this award due to him being the greatest coach to ever coach the game of football.

The (Un)Official Mark May Thread

Okay guys, Mark May was complaining about the officials in the OSU game today, which got me to think: Why don't we have an official Mark May thread? Use this thread to vent all your hatred and anger towards Mark May, and post anything that can make fun of him in any way, shape, or form. If there are Mark May GIF's, they go here.

72-0. Seriously. It's just one game. We didn't run up the score, they let us run up the score. He says Purdue deserved to win. Really? When you don't outplay the other team for the full 60 minutes, do you really deserve to win? OSU played well enough in the 4th and OT to deserve to win. We won. Purdue lost. Get over it, Mark. The only questionable call I see is anything you do/say on your twitter account. Grow up, seriously dude.

Also, does anyone else find it ridiculous that his "buddies" at ESPiN call him "MayDay"? It's a stupid nickname for a stupid personality. Lou Holtz has called him out multiple times for his obvious bias against the Buckeyes and it apparently hasn't gotten through his thick skull. I'm surprised that Mark May doesn't hold a similar bias against BYU for beating Pitt in 1984, a win which helped BYU win their only National Championship. What a hack, seriously.

Okay, now that I have spoken, let's hear what you all have to say.

2013 Defensive End Jonathan Allen

Hello everyone, it's Northern Virginia Buckeye (or NoVA Buckeye for short) and I'd like to go into recruiting a bit right now.

2013 DE Jon Allen (Ashburn, VA / Stone Bridge), the #1 Defensive End according to many recruiting website, has announced that he has narrowed his top choices down to five different schools, according to the Washington Post:

Virginia Tech

Penn State (LOL)

Alabama

Florida

and Ohio State, of course.

Here is a link to said article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/recruiting-insider/post/stone-bridge...

I live in Virginia, of course, and I have seen Allen play at camps and in games. From what I can tell, he is a very explosive player with a great motor. He isn't very big by D-1 D-Line standards, but he plays a big game. I think he would be a big addition to the Buckeyes, although I was not aware that we had scholly's available.

I do not have any available highlights from his junior season, but I do have his sophomore year highlight film, courtesy of Youtube and Virginia Preps

Does anyone have any insight or know how this situation is playing out?

EDIT-- The Washington Post reports that the Buckeyes have not offered Allen and that Stone Bridge High School Head Football Coach Mickey Thompson says Allen has "never shown interest" in Ohio State.
