Somebody please explain to me why this guy doesn't play? He adds length to the rotation at 6'8, He shoots the lights out from three point range, and he's thick enough at 225 pounds to help sully rebound underneath! It can't be a defensive problem.... anyone ever see Deshaun Thomas play defense? (who by the way is my favorite player) and it would be pretty easy to go offense defense with this guy and Lenzelle Smith! It seems like Kentucky and some of the other big name programs have no problem putting in their highly touted freshman talent and grooming them into a dominating (ugly if I might add) basketball team! What gives?

ya could it be a behavior problem like evan turnover the frosh?

I know he had the one tweet about his lack of playing time, but nobody has said anything else about his behavior

His defense is worse than ANY of the starters, secondly what has he shown so far that has been absolutely brilliant? The guy looked alright when he played against Nebraska. Why would you switch in a player who is at best marginally better on offense and exponentially worse at defense?

he doesn't play because, when he's on the floor, we would be better off playing with 4 players and sitting a chair in front of the other team's small forward. the chair would at least always be back on the defensive half. it's also wooden, which offers an additional upgrade over ross.

How would any of you know that he can't play defense? He never gets to play... and his offense is exactly the brand that would benefit the bucks right now. He spreads the floor, rebounds and can handle it too. He might make some freshman mistakes on defense, but how can anyone know if he never gets a chance to make those mistakes? (Not to mention the dude rains fire like it's dresden from three point land)

Just curious as to where you get the "he can rebound" from?  If it's simply based on his height, that's fine, but in 35 minutes on the court this year he has 4 rebounds.  That doesn't scream playing time to me.

He came in Dec, so he was already 2 months behind all the other freshman. That's the biggest reason.

From what Matta has said, the kid is just behind everyone else. He wasn't allowed to practice with team, then when he was cleared, he came in not knowing anything. If you've seen the guy play in the limited time he's seen, he looks okay on offense, although he's playing garbage minutes at the end of blowout games, but it is his defense. He looks more lost than a golf ball in high grass, losing his man, getting lost on screens, etc.

I agree the dude could be an upgrade on offense, but he is more of a liability than Thomas or almost anyone else on defense. I just hope he sticks around cause I could see him starting next year and being a go-to scorer. And Lord knows we will need a scorer next year.

Next year could prove to be a tough one for OSU hoops, losing Buford, Sullinger, and possibly, but more than likely Thomas as well. We all know in order to win games, you have to score more points than your opponent. You lose your 3 top scorers and where are the points supposed to come from? If we think this year's team has struggled by not having an automatic scoring threat like Diebler from 3 point range, what will happen when you are left with no scorers at all? Its a scary thought, its like Terrelle Pryor leaving the football team. Love him or hate him, the dude accounted for 80 some percent of the team's total offense in 2010, and we all saw what life was like post-Pryor.

I wish I understood why so many people believe Deshaun Thomas doesn't play defense.

He hasn't looked awful by any means. If anything I'd say Sullinger has been the biggest disappointment defensively.

Would love to see this touted recruit have positive impact on hoops team. Must be some reason  he does not get time on court ??  I don't buy that it is because he joined team in Nov. or Dec.

O-H-I-Owe-U's picture

Wouldn't mind seeing him work in for a few minutes to see if he can catch fire, like Deshaun was used last year. Throw a little gas on the fire.

spqr2008's picture

Saw him at a local retailer earlier this year, and asked if he'd get some pt, and he told me that "coach says I need to be more solid in practice against deshaun before I get pt" so it seems like he needs better defense.

I think it simply comes down to defense, it's the same reason DT didn't see much time last year. If you are not up to the level Thad wants defensively, you're not going to see the floor.

I couldn't agree more with this post. L. Ross gets atleast 15 to 20 minutes a game on any other B1G team. How about using the bech in general, Amir Williams is 6'11 and at the very could give you 8 to 10 minutes a game. The minutes Williams did get early in the season were productive, he's a McDonalds All American for a reason.

Look at how awesome our dudes that have transferred have done elsewhere.  Sheer domination.  Really wished we had all those clowns still.  (Eye roll).

After last night's game against Purdue...it's probably not a good time to second guess the coaching staff.

He looks like a new-born baby giraffe when playing defense..

Nuts4Bucks's picture

I have never questioned the coaching staff. I have said this before, I'm not at practice what the hell do I know. I just would like to see Williams get a few minutes. Although Evan has been playing great in the tourney!

Adamant73's picture

Maybe Ross just isn't that good and he is not ready for more playing time. Last time I checked Thad knows his hoops.

But we can all agree that DT does, in fact, play defense.  I just love watching that kid play.  He's a scorer.
