How long until we win a National Championship?

I'm thinking next season when we're bowl eligible.  We'll return basically the whole team and the players that we do lose we'll have potentially just as good, or better players replacing them.  I usually hate what Skip Bayless has to say, but he was raving about Urban Meyer, Braxton Miller and the ESPNU inside look into the Bucks practices and thinks OSU will win it all next year as well... Jesse Palmer and Steven A both said in year 3.  Regardless it seems that with our talent, the youth mixed with the experience and what we'll be bringing back in the next few years things are looking good for the Bucks.  I think we need to add some more solid OL by year 3, otherwise the skys the limit in my opinion.

Your thoughts?

Yeah year 2 is optimistic.  People really underestimate how hard it is to win a national title.  I think well at least be in the picture in year 3.

I'm banking on Miller's senior year also... A heisman and national title in the same year would be nice!

Actually Miller's junior seems more likely to me. His senior year we will be replacing starters on the O-line and he won't have Philly Brown. I could see it being 2013 or 2014 though.

Who knows, it's such a hard thing to do..going to be even harder with the new playoff coming. I'd say the best chance looks like 2013 on paper..but certain factors need to take place like Hankins and Roby returning, Braxton taking his passing skills to another level etc. I thought we would win the national championship in 2006, 2008, and 2010. I realized that it's easier on myself to just go into a season with the goal of winning the big Ten and the rest is gravy.

I agree 100% about the importance of key players retutrning for their SR or JR(roby). Thats why I feel ike we have the best chance in '13. Although we loose Simon and Sabino and Howard and Stoney, and Boren, if we can return Hankins and Roby for '13 look out! they will be more seasoned and the young guys will be better and I think by '13 Braxton will be at the peak of his game. Would we have won the title in '03 without Mike Doss returning? The combination of a high level NFL-ready talent returning for his sr year plus a badass 5* athelete coming in as a freshman (Clarett/Jalin Marshal) could equal NC for the Bucks in '13.

After watching the Alabam vs. Michigan game this weekend I would say we are a ways away from competing on the level of Alabama.  Hopefully by year 2 or 3 we can look that good.

Yes there are two Buckeyes in Ann arbor on this site!

My uncle told me after the national title in 2002 that it will be another 34 years before they win another one.  So, 24 more to go!

In all seriousness, I'm done expecting one.  The national championship in college football is the biggest sporting farce in the history of mankind.  Preseason perception is the biggest factor.  It is now largely controlled by ESPN, and the SEC's gross disregard for academics, recruiting rules, Title IX, and coaches' salaries.  The national title is not popular because people like it.  It's popular because people DON'T like it!  The Rose Bowl is better than any national championship could ever be...unless that national championship takes place in the Rose Bowl.  And frankly, I don't care if it's a B1G/Pac-12 matchup.  It's just a great sports tradition, and in a sport where the national title is simply an extension of voting for your Prom King in high school, tradition is more important.

I look at Pete Carroll's and Jim Tressel's careers of winning all those Rose Bowls or BCS bowls at one school as a far greater accomplishment than the two BCS national titles for LSU, Florida or Alabama.  Consistent regional success is harder to accomplish than one good year every few years.

Braxton Miller is the type of QB who can win you any game in which he plays.  After watching week 1 vs the Redhawks, OSU has a year to improve linebacker play and front 4 pass rush.

OSU would not have beaten Michigan 41-14, and after watching OSU and Alabama play Sat.  OSU's defensive front 7 is a definite step down from Bama's.

This year's freshman class is the step towards a d-line like Bama.  Urban is building a team with depth and speed like the SEC teams.  His mentality in recruiting is still geared like a SEC coach, just coaching in the B1G now.

There are so many things that have to fall in to place, I think all you can hope for is to be a contender. That will definitely happen. Win the B1G and then let the chips fall where they will.

Q: What is the difference between the Michigan Football Team and a bag of crap.

A: The Bag.

Id say year 3 under Urban Meyer.  Braxton will be a senior and in the heisman hunt.  By then, Urban will pull so many 5 star recruits from across the country

Serious contenders next season. Brax will be a Junior in a familiar system, WR's will be seasoned, D line will be just as strong. RB's at full strength. Coaching will be smoothed out. Should be the right time.

Urban's track record indicates year two and with him putting the pieces of the puzzle together I don't think any of us should be surprised if that happens.  I'm not all in on it because like others have said the ball has to bounce a certain way, but I can see it being realistic that we are right there at the end of next year.

Braxton Miller looks to be made for this offense, one game into the season & he's already breaking records that stood since 1974. We have a whole season to pick up this offensive system & build up our confidence for next year. You can just feel the history being made every single day since they hired Urban Meyer, & I do think we'll make a legitimate run at a National Title next year & at the very least make it to a BCS Bowl game. 2014 for sure will be our year, this offensive system is just too perfect for a guy like Miller who only learns more & gets better every day.

Didnt TP break some of those records before the whole tat-gate thing occured? I find it hard to belive TP didnt smash the record books with the god given talent he had. Man if only he played under Urban.....

But I think we will play in a big time bowl game next year and contended for a title in 2014.

Pryor never had 161 yards rushing, but he did have several 100 yard games. Those were the records that were removed*, I think.

Terelle Pryor may have had several games with 100+ yards rushing, but coming into the Miami game, Braxton Miller already had 4, 5 now. We gotta be excited about this guy, I see a Heisman Trophy for him in the next 2 years.

You better believe Urban Meyer, the coaching staff and ALL the players, even the seniors are all looking toward '13 to win a national championship. Its already being envisioned, formulated, and manifesting itself before our very eyes. Because of the bowl ban, OSU has a full two years to make this a reality and by the time next season kicks off, the team will be chomping at the bit and ready to wreak havok from the first to the last game. This year, Urban will show the young Bucks how to run-up the score, by next year they will be pushing the accelerator THROUGH the metal!I also think Urban and Marotti will have the players so motivated to accomplish next yrs objective that the departing seniors will have an impact on getting the Roby's and Hankins' to return and finish what was started. To some it might sound optimistic but I would'nt underestimate the power of Urban Meyer.

Honestly.. not to sound bias but... im thinking next freakin season... we will have 4 sr on the oline..almost the entire 2ndary and wr corp returns...brax will be a jr....and im hoping big hank comes back.. also look at our 2013 schedule... its not bad really.....and most importantly..look at the entire college football landscape....oklahoma and usc will fall off once these QBs leave....michigan will be worst off next season when denard leaves... texas will still has a shaky qb situation...FLstate is built to win today if not NEVER ...and besides that..i mean teams like bama...lsu...and va-tech would be in the hunt but soo will us...but who else really threatens us??? saying we will win in '14 is a lil more difficult... the playoffs will be introduced and thats another game for us to get thru.. on top of that we will be breaking in 4 new starters across the oline... and im a firm believer that champ teams have good quality veteran olines... not to say these young recruits wont be good but... i like our chances with the veterans Srs returning next season...defense will be great either way!

I want to see a NC as much as anybody else, but we're nowhere near title contenders right now. I think everybody in college football is pretty soft right now, though.  ESPN will call it parity but I call it soft.  This year's top 5 would get crushed by our 06 team, the Texas teams with Vince Young, USC's Reggie Bush years, etc.  Maybe 2 years from now, but I won't be confident until we land another AJ Hawk-esque LB.

William's picture
William on 9 Sep 2012 - 12:39am #

Shazier and Gant are guys that haven't received much playing time. let's hold off on saying we don't have an AJ Hawk like player, plus Hawk has always been overrated. Laurinaitis was far and away a better linebacker.

johnblairgobucks's picture
johnblairgobucks on 9 Sep 2012 - 12:44am #

^ nope to your Hawk thoughts.

William's picture
William on 9 Sep 2012 - 12:50am #

Hawk won the Lombardi, Laurinaitis won both the Nagurski and the Butkus award. Also just look at their pro-careers, Laurinaitis is and was a better linebacker than Hawk. Laurinaitis was the heart and soul of the best Buckeye defense of the past decade (2007). People get so caught up in Hawk just because of his athleticism, but his career pales in comparison to that of Laurinaitis. Why do you think the Packers cut and then restructured Hawk's contract, when Laurinaitis just inked a new $55 million dollar deal with the Rams?

johnblairgobucks's picture
johnblairgobucks on 9 Sep 2012 - 1:02am #

well, Hawk was not over-rated, and Laurinaitis was not greatly superior to him either.  I won't use the pro evaluation to evaluate their college careers.  Both were great Buckeyes, glad they played together and beat Michigan together.   Happy Laurinaitis is doing well for himself in the NFL.

William's picture
William on 9 Sep 2012 - 1:06am #

I will say their college careers were very similar, both were great, but Laurinaitis has really seperated himself with his pro-career. He's got to be one of the Top 10 linebackers in the NFL right now.

BuckeyeFanInBoulder on 9 Sep 2012 - 1:17am #

Either one works for me.  Hawk or Laurinaitis, we don't have either right now.  I hope somebody develops into that, but we need a much more stout D before we can contend.  Based on attrition we'll probably finish in the top 10 this season, but there's a huge gap between Bama and #10 today.

Buckeyejason's picture
Buckeyejason on 12 Sep 2012 - 6:58pm #

It's hard to compare the two when hawk played outside at Will and JL played inside at Mike. Hawk was the more explosive playmaking LB IMO but Laurinaitis had the more "headlines" and awards. Both were takling machines..Hawk was more athletic and explosive when he made plays..made more plays in the backfield etc.

JL was just a very smart, consistent, hard nosed player for 3 years in a row. I think of you ask most Buckeye fans they'll day Hawk was the better player. In the pros though JL is rising up the charts as a top LB..Hawk has just been "pretty good", but not elite.

With Washington and Spence most likely starting next year, we will finally have that pass rush that teams will fear. And The O-line will have another tough camp under their hands. I believe it is not an unlikely expectation for next year. Look at Chizik and Tressel. They won it in their second year, and that seems like the magic of recent history.
