2014 Cleveland (OH) St Ignautius OL Jimmy Byrne has committed to Notre Dame. Byrne was an offensive lineman high on Ohio State's board and had a Buckeye offer.
Byrne got an Ohio State offer before his junior season even began but his visit to South Bend for the Notre Dame-Michigan game turned out to be too much to overcome for the scarlet and gray. Ohio State had Byrne on a visit to the Michigan game a few weeks ago and Byrne enjoyed himself, but was hesitant to say if OSU had made up any ground on Notre Dame.
The Irish can thank Coach Harry Heistand for this coup. Byrne had mentioned to me several times how the relationship with Notre Dame Coach Heistand had a lot to do with his affinity to Notre Dame.
Ohio State will now go forward in pursuing other offensive lineman like Orlando Brown Jr., Damian Prince, Jamarco Jones, Andy Bauer, K.C. McDermott, Mason Cole, and Marcelys Jones.
In-state offensive lineman still getting looks from Ohio State that I think could eventually hold Buckeye offers are Westerville (OH) Central OT Nick Richardson and Lancaster (OH) OT Kyle Trout. Both continue to stay in contact with Ohio State and were at a few Buckeye games this year.
Tracking the 2014 offensive line group this year will be interesting as that position group will be pivotal for the 2014 recruiting class at OSU.

this happened like a week ago... not sure why it became big news today

It happened today, so if I had to guess, I'd say that's why it's big news.

Yeah, reading between the lines on Byrne's comments about the OSU/Mich game really was a red flag about his intentions on going to ND. Its all good though, we will a few damn good linemen for the '14 class.
"Get him a body bag, Yeah!"
Too bad, dude kind of looks soft though, meaning he doesn't really look mean. I want mean dudes upfront.
truth of the matter is...if your name isn't O Pace you are a dime a dozens if you are an O lineman. good luck to him looks like notre dame is throwing some cash around.
wow... is this inappropriate... downvote this into obilivion please
Cause I couldn't go for three
Why is this inappropriate? Because he stated his opinion? Personally I think all of the down votes are inappropriate.

Im happy for the kid. Catholic kid going to a catholic school.
We cant get everybody and hes not going to Michigan.
I think our recruiting is slowly moving away for Ohio and heading South.
Urban will go after the cant miss Ohio kids but other than that we are national.
I'm a friend of thunder is it any wonder lightning strikes me
Good thing Ohio produces several cant-miss recruits every year. Urban will get the VAST majority of them. At least it came down to two undefeated teams who beat michigan.
"Get him a body bag, Yeah!"
I agree with most of what you said, as long as OSU doesn't miss out on too many Ohio kids. If ND wasn't playing in the MNC, I wonder if he would have considered OSU more heavily? Success breeds success.
I think Urban has more pull, nationally, than Tressel did. Tressel got his national commits. But Urban, based on his time in the South, will be able to pull kids from Florida, Texas, and Georgia, where Tressel rarely had a chance.

Captain, you sound like ND's greatest recruiter, the late, great Woody Hayes!
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
This is a bummer, but its easier losing out on a recruit to ND when they are actually having success on the field. At least it makes sense. I just hate it when recruits pick far inferior programs like Pitt...(you know who im referencing). I know guys like to stay near home, but come on!
Over the years I'd bet ND has gotten more Moeller, Iggy and Eds kids than the Buckeyes have.
You do know those are Catholic high schools, right?
Wish him good luck and move on to the next target. Too bad, for sure...but you know damn well Urban isn't gonna stop to sulk about it.
